Very sad how some Mark Twain classic books in CA have been banned. That used to be required reading. 😢

Nice tour of Mark Twain’s boyhood home! Have you seen his home in Hartford, Connecticut? It’s shaped like a steamboat, and it’s where he wrote some of his books- it’s beautiful!

Pres. Teddy Roosevelt's daughter, Alice Lee Roosevelt Longworth (1884-1980), remembered Mark Twain's visiting their family at Sagamore Hill. He was quite the character - enjoyed by some & not-so-much by others.

The ultimate tragedy is that even today Huckleberry Finn and Tom Sawyer are banned by some "enlightened" school boards who dwell in a world comprised of Rip Van Winkles. I especially liked the alabaster figures of Mr. Clemens scattered throughout his boyhood home, peering like a benevolent specter over a distant, cherished past.

Mark Twain has some lost media connected to him in the 1890s he recorded about 6 wax cylinders for Sound Scout Gianni Bettinni the Bettini collection was lost due to bombardments on Berlin in 1945. however, quite some copies were made and sold of cylinders from the collection between 1897 and 1908 and some do pop up from time to time and the popularity of Mark Twain was immense so I have high hopes of his cylinders reappearing one day.

it is a pity they don't have the feather Christmas trees of the 1870s to 1910s which were made of feathers as the name suggests Queen Victoria of England introduced them in the 1850s and because of hem the feather and real pine trees became wildly popular all over the globe.

Great vlog! I spent every summer in Hannibal at my grandparents' house. We would go down and do all things Tom Sawyer and Sam Clemons. They used to have Tom Sawyer Days in the summer. We'd go down by the riverfront and watch the fence painting contests. They had plays as well. It was a lot of fun as a kid. You should have gone to Mark Twain Cave. It's really neat. Across from it is Cameron Cave. The Mark Twain Cave is lit, and the Cameron was not, at least back then. Good memories. Thanks for sharing!

After seeing how he spent his time as an adult, it's really cool to see how he spent his life as a child. He got his pen name from when he was a riverboat pilot. If you read this Jordan, you should go and see his house in Ct. It's very cool, but you have to go online to get tickets. I think the house is Hartford.

seeing an outhouse brings back memories I'm 49 I'm probably of the last generation of babies who had cotton diapers and a good friend of the family still had an outhouse I was about 8 and me and my sis and I were sleeping over to do your business in an outhouse you had to do several things with no1 you had to take a full scoop of fireplace ashes and throw that in the hole the toilet paper in those days was of a crepe type paper quite rough with no2 first you had to use the rough toilet paper and then take a full scoop of sawdust followed by ashes now everybody smoked those days so cigarette ashes were mixed with the fireplace ashes this had a purpose it smelled and muffled the stench another way was to burn a sheet of newspaper in the ash bucket and throw a bit of sawdust on it. after 2 years the outhouse moved 3 feet to the side so the dug hole now full could be covered by soil and compost which would be used in the garden to grow crops the new site would be the old side of the outhouse 4 years back the compost would be dug out and a special shed was in the garden to keep it and it would be good to feed the garden for 2 years. I think we should bring the outhouse back it's very green and good for the environment we are not conscious of our waste today and how to deal with it many places to clean our wastewater are biohazard sites today, and a lot of nasties seep into the water and pollute our groundwater the outhouse with its use of ash and sawdust neutralizes this and create a solid and fertile fertilizer. when I had a hobby garden house where I could stay over weekends and during vacations I made an outhouse I had tons of ashes from my BBQ and fireplace and I knew a furniture shop that provided me with garbage bags full of sawdust I dug a round hole 6 feet deep 2 feet wide with straw reeds lining the soil I put the outhouse on top and it was ready I had this place for ten years until the site became a hub for drug addicts and the fun was gone since stuff got stolen the druggies had a layer in the form of an abandoned decreped ROV since they were making me go I would have revenge! eh, did I say I had an outhouse?! well, the night I left I filled a 200-liter rain barrel with uh, you know what! from the fresh outhouse hole! and with the help of other people, leaving the place we dumped it all into the skylight of the ROV!! they came running out covered in S! screaming out loud we all laughed out loud!! and left.
