Mark Whitfield, guitar
Roland Guerin, bass
Troy Davis, drums
The trio comprising Mark Whifield, Roland Guerin and Troy Davis is a true power-trio. Whitfield, guitarist and leading member of the band, is one of the most interesting talents ever to emerge from Berklee College of Music. As solo artist and world famous sideman, he is able, thanks to his musical versatility, to move from R & B to jazz and pop without losing the unique styles of these genres, just like his mentor George Benson. Nominated by the New York Times as "The Best Young Guitarist in the Business" (1990), Mark worked with great artists such as Dizzy Gillespie, Art Blakey, Herbie Hancock, Quincy Jones, Ray Charles, Burt Bacharach, Wynton Marsalis, Branford Marsalis, Stevie Wonder, Joe Lovano, Sting, Mary J. Blige, Chaka Khan, John Mayer, Diana Krall, Lauryn Hill, Chris Botti and the Dave Mathews Band. Mark Whitfield will be on stage with Troy Davis, great drummer with several world tours behind him and recognized by the World Drummer magazine among the Top 500 Drummers, and Roland Guerin, excellent bassist who worked with George Benson, Ellis Marsalis, Marcus Roberts (with whom he played at the Winter Olympics in 2002), John Scofield, Shannon Powell, Herlin Riley and Germain Bazzle. - See more at: www.jazzascona.ch/index.php/en...

So my 13 year old asks me “MUM why do like this music ?? There’s no singing ??” My answer , it’s simple yet complicated , I feel so peaceful listening to it . It’s so beautiful like everything beautiful you’ve ever seen put down in music . I hope one day she gets it like I do 🎶🎶🎶

I agree that the movement, facial expressions, etc. are part of his act,, but this is good playing--more lyrical and tasteful than what I heard on the Newport 70 tour, where he was into lots of repetitious, show-offy "licks." Here he sounds like he's listened to some Wes, And he's wearing recognizable pants. At the Newport concert he was wearing tight leather pants with no fly. (Maybe they were on backwards.) With his feet so tight together, you had to wonder if maybe he was holding it.

Intro was beautiful, and his lines are great, but man I just thought they were way too busy especially for the song. The rest of the trio also had little interaction, he might as well have been playing to a backing track. I really liked all the lines he played but his tone suffered with the speed he played it at, kinda think he railed a line before he played this one.

I agree, the lines are way too busy for the song, and there was minimal band interaction. But I also thought the intro did not hold together; it sounded randomized. There were some pretty chords toward the end of the intro, but no part of it actually set up the song.

What is happening with his technic?I have all his albums and currently listening all day long the one with Dave Holland and he is crushing it there. What happened to him he sounded amazing.I just checked a few more vids posted recently and it is like I am watching a totally different Mark. Probably he wanted to abandon the cliches that he used to play all the time and become different type f player but I liked his old style way better. I have been listening to him since I was 14 and now I am 41. I just wanted to find some live concerts of him and see how he does all that crazy stuff and now I see that he cannot do it.

@@Rightupbass he is killing it? Where? Look at the comment section.he does not play like himself at all.his playing used to be very technical and cliche but probably he got tired of that and wanted to play more intuitive but that requires totally different skills .the thing is he probably changed e erything and now struggles a lot.i waited years for internet and video so I can enjoy watching him playing like lightning but today I am disappointed .sorry this is my opinion.i ha e all his aplbums.the one with Dave Holland is amazing .listen to it and will see the difference.

I think his problem here is the cheap Ibanez guitar hes playing on. I've seen and heard him live and he can really play. I owned that very model hes playing and took it back to the store with in a couple days.

korgtritonextreme100 Have to disagree with you there. I’ve had my 155 from the first production run in 2012 and have used it as my number one instrument for Jazz. I’ve played with some very experienced players and have been at a Conservatorium with it weekly for over three years and many gigs. I get nothing but compliments for my sound.

I kinda disagree a little as well. IMO, Benson sounded every bit as good on his $600 Ibanez (and at times better) as he did on his $20,000 L-5.
