In this video post I test and review the Markaudio CHR120 fullrange driver. This is a 12cm driver featuring a magnesium cone and dust cap.

Joseph, thanks so much for making this video. I have just built a 70 litre floor stander using this driver. I totally agree with your findings and the need for the contour circuit. I have just tried this and the sound is so much better now. Next I will try the baffle step correction to evaluate if I would benefit from that. The fine detail these drivers produce is indeed impressive. Thanks again.

Thanks! I’m glad to hear. I’ve introduced the plans on my site for the complete plan set. I will be introducing a variant of the plan soon which converts the CHR120 to bass and mid-bass and then setting a waveguide loaded Alpair5.3 on top. The waveguide measures 40cm x 40cm square. The idea is to maintain the MarkAudio sound but without the breakup in the upper treble. Also the spiderless design of the new Alpair5.3 gives it a really dynamic sound.

Very interesting look at these drivers. I used the Pluvia7 drivers in a transmission line bookshelf and i was very impressed with the sound. The smaller cone and higher break-up frequency does give a more balanced sound. And thank you again for these in depth analysis of these drivers.

First, thank you for your research,, You having evaluated both the Seas FA22RCZ and the Markaudio CHR 120's , how do they compare realizing that they are significantly different in cost?

Enjoying and learning a lot from your videos! Have you ever tested the Purifi drivers? Really neat designs.
@JosephCrowesDIYSpeakerBuilding
I’ve done a number of projects… but nothing on RU-vid. I’m finishing up an 8” Purifi 2-way that I’ll be featuring soon.

An excellent video. I've been investigating MarkAudio drivers & I'm itching to try a design. It occurred to me that a 4" driver (like the inexpensive CHR-70) mated with a low cost high efficiency 6" or 8" bass driver could simultaneously achieve baffle step compensation & relieve the 4" driver, when crossed over at the baffle step frequency. A double chamber box is required, no biggie. The crossover could be fairly simple too. Has anyone published a DIY design along these lines? Thanks in advance!

Is the bass fast and punchy?

No, compared to some other drivers it is slightly lacking in punch. I tested a Beyma 12LX60V2 in a 60L cabinets. That was very punchy, like a shockwave through the house, made the HVAC rattle even at normal listening levels, unlike some other drivers that are just too soft (for the same output level).
