I recently purchased a Henry lever action chambered in .45-70. Having a ball shooting it. Actually quite a bit funner than my AR-15s. Ammo is very expensive though.

Excellent video. Glad Ruger saved Marlin. I have several actual Marlin rifles. All great guns. The ones made by Remington were not that great. I do want one of the new Ruger made Marlins. Thanks for the review.

When that statement is made that means you never shot a Remington made Marlin 1895. The only less than perfect lever guns with the Remington stamp on them were the ones made using J.M. Parts Remington inherited from J.M. from the buy. This was between 2010 and 2015. Starting in 2016 Remington no longer was using J.M. Marlin parts they re engineered all the Marlin lever gun parts to be made on new close tolerance CNC machines. This Remlin baloney needs to stop. Because it’s J.M. Marlin parts that Remington got thy were left over from the buyout and J.M. Workers assembled them. In 2016 everything Remington Marlin was all Remington. And Marlin made by Remington starting in 2016 we’re the best made Marlins ever!! Look into the major problems Ruger 1895 Marlins have had already. Bolts riding on top of hammer all the way through the whole lever gun racking cycle? Bad!! Fluted bolts, Bad!! Enlarged iron sights Bad!!

@@kevinrollman3101you have no clue what you’re talking about 😂 and it shows. Remi Marlins were trash. I had two and both were duds, one had finish issues brand new out of box, stock had scratches, the other the stock was off from the actual frame of the firearm and was jagged. They were thrown together with absolutely no regards to quality assurance. Remington was just pumping them out to make money without a care in the world. The new marlins by ruger are leaps and bounds better. Smooth, nice finish, definitely smoother lever action, it’s almost like glass, straight shooter. Stop being silly because you bought a remi Marlin and wanna hype it up 😂
@kevinrollman3101
@kevinrollman3101 6 месяцев назад
@@The_PaleHorseman I sympathize with you about your experience. Between the years 2010 when Remington assumed J.M.Marlin and till about the end of 2015, the Marlin lever gun parts were all J.M. Marlin, and assembled by disgruntled former J.M. Marlin workers. This was because they were losing their jobs!! They destroyed some of the production machines and trashed schematics of the lever guns. In 2016 Remington started making their own Marlin lever guns and the years after that were Remington produced Marlin lever guns. This is after Remington moved to Illion, New York, Re engineered all the lever gun parts and manufactured them on brand new CNC machines capable of very close tolerances. So if your Marlin lever guns were dated before 2016, this is why you had a problem. J.M. Marlin’s quality was way down before they sold the Company to Remington. From 2010 to midway through 2015 Remington was selling the J.M. Product they inherited from J.M. Marlin Company. The Remlins were all J.M. Marlin. I got my info from Rifle Magazine, and Shooter Magazine. Because the author of one of the articles tries out J.M., Remington, and Ruger lever guns. And wrote a lengthy write up on this subject. He did not shoot any of the Remington made one’s before 2016. Because he knew they were J.M. He did say that the quality of J.M. Marlins were going down hill when they sold to Remington. He said the bores on the J.M. Models were poor quality, deep tool marking on the lands. He said that Remington made barrels were the best of all three Companies. The blueing on the Remington barrels and sides of the chambers were the same as Ruger and both were better than Marlin J.M. He said out of all the ones he tried, Remington and Ruger were the most accurate. Also the trigger pull weight was best on the Remington made models. Remington on the 30-30’s 4.25 lbs.trigger pull. Ruger 7.25. Ruger 1895’s 6.25, Remington 4.25. I am not being silly, my 2016 Remington made 1895 CB 45-70 is an excellent lever gun. Again I don’t know if the ones you bought were before 2016, it would be worth checking out. Sorry that happened to you, seriously.

Just put one in layaway, it was on a special order list for almost 2 years, finally came in. Went to pick it up last weekend & seen the store also got a marlin trapper in, so being that I don't have much self control these days, I took the trapper home with me & left the sbl in layaway for now. Nice looking guns! Will be enjoying them soon.

Nice review, super interesting to see the uk perspective on this so very American gun. One thing to note is since you guys are going lead free is that the loads you were shooting are on the mildest end of the scale (they are close to the original loading from 1873 in performance). Common leadfree loads are 250gr going ~2000 fps, the recoil and muzzle energy on these goes up a lot. They expand very well though, even at low velocities. Definitely something that benefits from hand loading, not only for the price ($3.5-4 a round here for the better ammo as opposed to less than $1 for a hand load ) but also because you can dial in the exact performance you want. The case is enormous as it was a black powder round originally, I have a box of 225gr lead free that advertises 2800 fps on the box. They hit hard on both ends of the rifle lol.

@@joenoonan762 sadly I am in California, so online is not an option for me. The only lead free I have seen in stores in months (when it is rarely available) is Buffalo bore, which hurts your shoulder and wallet simultaneously. I had picked up two boxes of hornady sub x right before writing this comment 6 months ago, and those were $70 a box. Since then almost no 45-70 in stores here except an occasional box of leverevolution which I dislike because the difference of brass length. Fortunately I roll my own mostly. 🤷‍♂️

That is a handsome rifle. The recoil is not that bad because S&B is a mild load :) With modern loads recoil will be stouter than a 30-06. But that shouldn't stop anyone, in fact, that's the attraction - those spicy ones :)

Great review. I’ve just bought a Remington made Marlin 1895 Dark series in 45-70. I was reluctant due to the reputation regarding quality of some of the early Remlins. Mine is perfectly fine. The later made ones are fine, but unfortunately the brand was already tarnished where hysteria took over about any Remington made Marlins.

I've always heard that and tried doing that, however I've seen folks from actual scope companies mount them right up to where they "shouldn't". On my Henry 45-70 the way the rings fit, my LPVO kinda sits with the front ring almost abutting the turrets. No issues, even after spicy loads. As long as the rings aren't impinging on the thicker parts of the tube. DISCLAIMER: I am not an expert on this and this is not advice, in fact, I'm interested in a lucid explanation one way or the other.

I think it's a hammer extension that is attached to hammers on lever guns to be used with a scope - to make it easier to run the hammer, especially if you need to lower it safely. A couple of companies make them. It just slides over the hammer and then you lock it with a tiny allen screw. I'd say it's a must with a scope.

405 grain bullet in 1400 feet is a very slow load. Fabric ammo producers need to hold the speed back because they never know what type of rifle the customer will use the ammo for. When you reload yourself these kind of 405 grain bullets travels out of the 1895 barrel in approx. 2000 feet per second. Then you understand Newtons law :) I have the original Marlin 1895 SBL, with JM stamped barrel and I love it. But you have to reloade yourself ...
