Stumbled into this old Marlin 336 in good cosmetic shape. Seems like it has a few issues to work out, but shoots pretty well so far with factory ammo.

Firing pin probably gummed up, a few drops of 3 in 1 oil on the pin cleaned with a q tip and reoiled should help. The lever issue should be easily fixable if I remember correctly. One of the most accurate guns I have ever owned. Plenty of videos on RU-vid on how to take apart and clean .

Good video. Sure is low velocity for a 150gr bullet. Most other factory ammo I have in 30-30 is averaging 2350 give or take. In 2013 I chronographed 160gr Hornady LEVERevolution in my 2012 Marlin 20” barrel and in my 1973 Winchester 24” barrel. 10 shots on both were averaging 2465fps. I have not done the test since so I don’t know if it would still chronograph the same or not.

My 50's vintage 336RC will not reliably strike CCI primers. It fires flawlessly with Remington & Winchester primers. My best accuracy is with Remington brass & primers, 150 grain Speer Hot-Cor flat nose bullets with a 35 grain charge of W-748. Good luck with your gun, we've seen those lever action Marlins quadruple in value over the last 30 years.

Thanks! I’ve got the problem fixed, see my latest video on the 336. I did end up putting nearly $500 more into the gun in work and parts, but I think it was worth it.

If you are like me probably wouldn't sell the Marlin for anything. Just can't replace the memories with it.

You have found the reason it was in the gun shop! Should be an easy fix.

Never seen a box of Nosler 30-30 ammo. Does it say on the box anywhere that is light, or light recoil? I have always seen 150gr 30-30 at advertised velocity of 2390.

Your first group of five shots was 1/2 inch at 50 yards. That is outstanding especially with that scope. Get the head spacing checked, the lever fixed, the firing pin serviced and a good quality scope, because you have a real shooter. I have a newer Marlin that shoots Hornady Leverevolution ammo at .75 inches and Remington CorLock at just under 2 inches at 100. Pick up some Hornady and good hunting.

Check out my other videos on this rifle, I did exactly that! Except that I haven’t changed out the scope yet.

I'm still trying to wear out the 336 I got when I started hunting. It's still puts venison on the table. I have other guns but the 30-30 still goes for a hunt every year.

9:36 My 1973 336A (24" barrel) did the same thing. I showed a gunsmith and he said don't worry about it. What ever was happening, it has stopped. Primers stay seated now on factory and hand loads. Yours could be different, so show a gunsmith what you have to be sure. Best factory loads so far are Leverevolution, followed by 150 gr. Core-Lokt. I mostly shoot hand loads. Mine came with an original Weaver 4-power scope. If you can find a decent 4-power, or even lower, I recommend you try it. Mount it as low as you can. It's really the right scope for .30-30 shooting. High magnification is just silly, even detrimental, on a .30-30. My 2 cents.
@TheOutdoorGeneralist
@TheOutdoorGeneralist Год назад
I’d agree, no need for high magnification on this. I’ve thought about throwing a 2-7 Leupold on it, that would be about perfect.

You can replace that plunger catch and spring pretty cheap. I had to replace a buddy of mine's Marlin 336. It was doing the same thing.

That’s correct! I got it back from the gunsmith and have since found the problem. I’ll talk about it in my next video on the 336.

I wonder if a previous owner lightened the hammer spring to get that glass-like action, and as a result caused the light primer strikes?
@daviddejong187
@daviddejong187 Год назад
That's what happened to me. I put in a lighter main spring and had an occasional FTF. Put original spring back in and everything is hunky dory. I no longer swap these springs out.
@chipsterb4946
@chipsterb4946 11 месяцев назад
David - I bought a revolver and the seller told me that the action had been “slicked up” only after we struck a deal. Turned out the hammer spring tension screw was backed out and Bubba had cut 4-5 coils off the trigger rebound spring. Fortunately I knew exactly what needed to be done to get a safe, reliable gun.

Some 336s have a problem with light strikes due to the two piece firing pin producing unnecessary drag. Replace it with a one piece and problem usually goes away

Marlin misfires are kind of common. Two piece firing pin and rough surfaces on the rear portion of firing pin. I smoothed and polished mine but have not yet had a chance to try it again. Tons of misfires. I can’t trust it for hunting yet. Mines a 1984 date.
@easttexan2933
@easttexan2933 Год назад
well Lots, I have to disagree with your statement, "Marlin misfires are kind of common". In my hunting lifetime (71 years) I've owned many 336's and have never had a misfire. Probably one of the most reliable firearms there is.
@lotsofstuff3860
@lotsofstuff3860 Год назад
@@easttexan2933 It’s common enough that you’ll see several people on RU-vid talking about how to fix it, and those posted videos have comments from people who have experienced it. So it’s a thing. I’m just saying that it happens, and unfortunately mine is doing it. It is smooth as glass, looks great, feels great, but mostly does light strike misfires, just as others have reported.

I had a .35 that had misfires I ordered a new firing pin ,when i pulled it out to install it a huge metal shaving fell out I don't know how common this is but I reinstalled the original pin &have fired it for years never had another. The shaving had to have got in the bolt at tha factory.

... that Tasco junk scope should be able to hold together on a 30-30 win ... good "cosmetic shape" might not be good shooting shape ... hope you checked the barrel with a flashlight ... if the previous owner(s) fired enough shots to wear out the lever retention pin spring the bore could be as smooth as a baby's behind
@TheOutdoorGeneralist
@TheOutdoorGeneralist 29 дней назад
Oh I did check the bore! Looks pretty dang good. And it shoots good with handloads too. I agree the Tasco scope is junk but it has held zero so far. The rifle will eventually wear a different scope but I didn’t make that an immediate priority.

I have never in my youtube video watching life understood why one who is sighting in their rifle would shoot a 5 shot group 1.5" left of dead center. What the heck is the point of that. After those 2 rounds were left of center, why didn't you just make the necessary correction to bring the next 3 to center? You did say the ammo was quite expensive but yet you wasted 3 more rounds and you still have to make the correction to center of bulls. Even with the misfires, still a grand old 336 in classic condition.
