I guess you lose some velocity, but for most purposes, that's not the big deal most make it. I think the appeal is mostly for people like myself, folks who really enjoy a smaller rifle or handgun that will essentially do what a bigger, heavier, more awkward one to carry will do. That said, this one does push the limit. The standard Guide Gun Marlin makes is pretty much the ideal size in a .45-70 for me.

Yes, the "70" represents the amount of standard black powder loading back in the day. The .45-90 is just a longer case, I believe, and holds more powder.

It's good to see the pistol grip stock on this rifle. I know lots of folks like the straight grip better, but on a rifle with the thump that the 45-70 puts out, the pistol grip style helps me manage the recoil better for follow up shots. I have a LTD III model that I swapped the stock and trigger plate, to change it from straight to pistol grip style. The LTD is an 18", octagon barrel which propels it into the "looking cool" department.

I picked up a Guide Gun about a year ago (Hickok video inspired purchase) that is post Remington. Fit and finish are excellent. So good in fact, I was surprised to hear that people are having these issues. Only thing I did was purchase a kit to remove that pesky cross bolt safety.

Its a sweet gun. I had a Winchester 94 i bought in 06 (right before the year they stopped making them for a while in fact). I was so excited to buy it because I had handled my Grandpas 1940s era Winchester which was a masterpiece, solid as a rock and sleek. The one I bought was anything but that. Sloppy workmanship is all I have to say. Ive brought this up a few times on some videos so if anybody has read this and rolling their eyes I apologize for the redundancy...i just felt betrayed -_-

I bought a Marlin GBL (blued version of this gun with a brown laminated stock) about a year ago. Gun functions fine and the fit and finish are very good. It is a so called Remlin gun, produced after the takeover of Marlin in Ct. You can tell by the serial number. I own a couple of other Marlins, 336 in .35 Remington from the '60s, another older 1895. The new gun looks and shoots just as good as the old Marlns, love them all.

Depends on your load. You can load the .45-70 to the same ballistics, so I'd rather just stay with the classic round. The reason for the 450 Marlin was to offer a ".45-70 round" that could not be chambered in an antique trapdoor and blow it up. That way they could load it warmer than the standard factory .45-70 stuff without liability. There could be other reasons, but I believe that was the main purpose of it. For handloaders, it's not an issue, of course.

Love it, keep up the good work. Please, please, please, Mr cameraman, rtfm, use 'selective focus'. Hickok, excellent video.Love it, love that gun. One thing I wanted to mention, or ask. I, like you, prefer to have a round chambered but the hammer lowered. Something I discovered on a hunt a few years ago, though, is the firing pin on the Marlins, or at least the 336's from the early 90's, is full length. So, if you lower the hammer all the way -- not just to the half-cock -- the hammer/firing pin is resting on the cartridges primer. If something were to hit the hammer at its lowest position, the round would ignite. At least it appears so. The way I found this, fortunately, was a slight indent on the primer of a cartridge that had been in the chamber with the hammer lowered; the round did not ignite. Something you might want to check for yourself. Would love to see you do a video on this. I don't know how many people know it. I obviously didn't. Also, I have no idea how strong the half-cock notch on the hammer is. Can it be broken like the old Colt SAA's were notorious for doing?

Laminate trees, pure Hickok45. I always like when these videos occur with that sense of fun coming out even when a watermelon. Marlin kick really hard and loud in that caliber, but the control is great as an experienced shooter and that comes through the video easily. Professional guides had been getting the Marlin 1895 shortened for decades before Marlin made it official. The original idea was to have a fast handling, high caliber gun for backing up hunters going after dangerous NA game; i.e., the big bears. It's small size also means that it stores quite easily, a serious consideration when you're climbing in and out of a small plane or a boat. If you're a hunter, stick with the 22" 1895. You'll save money and get more range.

I bought a Marlin 1895 like this one but it's in blue and in 450 Marlin. It's a great little gun and it packs quite a wallop. Definitely a good rifle to bring along if you're in bear country. I like the stainless version, would be much more suitable for being out in the environment.

I just bought a Marlin 45-70 1895 Classic. WOW!!!!! I am 64 Years old and never been fond of heavy recoil. I had a Remington 760 Game master 30-60. I hated the recoil. I did not have fun shooting so I didn't soot it much. I find the 45-70 Classic is much heavier and I had to add a scope (not for range, but because I can't see the target, front and rear sight at the same time, I have trifocals) I feel the recoil is more of a push using the Hornady 325 gr. Leverevultion. And my GOD does do damage. I have started Hog hunting in Florida and they can be very big and fast, I am neither. I want something that will take them down NOW. I have shot 40 rounds in an afternoon with just a light jacket on and had a bruise on my shoulder, but it was so MUCH FUN. What was the most fun was I had my son, STAFF SGT Christopher Peters, sight it in for me. He is 6' 1" tall and weighs 205. He is an Expert X4 in Rifle and and Expert 3X in pistol. I always ask him to do the sighting. He went prone and fired 3 times. He won't shoot my rifle any more. He had a bruise like a softball on his shoulder. I tried over and over to tell him that you can't put that much energy into a non-movable prone body, it is going to hurt. Maybe in the future. ( By the way it makes me feel like I am still a man when I like shooting a rifle and he won't touch it.

victorrpeters, very bad idea to shoot the Marlin 45-70 from a prone position, or, any position not allowing free movement. I guess your son know realizes why it's advised against shooting it like that.
@cmj20002
@cmj20002 6 лет назад
I have never shot mine from a prone position. My rifle is fairly light and it recoils hard. I have a .444 Marlin and after 4 to 6 rounds I am bruised. My rifle needs a better recoil pad. The one it has, has very little cushion and I was wearing a light T-shirt when I was shooting. A think winter coat and it would be fine or it needs a better recoil pad. I keep shooting it because I like it so much, but after. Ouch, I hurt.

Agreed. I can reload a 45-70 with 325 grain FTX bullet for less than 70 cents, and that includes buying new Starline brass at no more than 10 reloads-then-chuck. Hickok45 just fired about a dozen shots so less than $10 for this range session. This isn't a rifle you go to the range and shoot 100 rounds a day with. In comparison, if you went to the range with an AR-15 and wanted to spend less than $10 in ammo, you could only fire ONE 30-round magazine. Speaking of all the calibers I own, I MUST RELOAD 44 Mag, 7mm RM, 45-70, and I suppose I could include 308 and 7.62x39. I load 44 Mag full-power loads at less than 50 cents a round, and that's with an expensive XTP bullet on top. That's less than half retail cost!!

This genre of rifle is collectively known as "guide guns"...typically of large bore and short barrel with the intent being that in thick brush (as on a guided hunt...hence the name) it is a very easy rifle to swing around and bring to bear on dangerous game. The intended range for one of these is perhaps 50-75 yards, but also MUCH closer. The large caliber has nearly 1.5 TONS of energy and is unmatched for disabling dangerous game at close ranges. The 45-70 Govt. is a hoss. I own an STP !

I recently traded away a few guns toward a Marlin 1895GS (stainless guide gun in .45-70), and I LOVE it. Would love a STP too. Had a 336GBL (.30-30) with laminate stock, but could finally justify the 1895 because we're moving to grizzly country soon (SW Montana). 1895GS with walnut feels lighter and faster than the laminate (laminate is a bit heavier), but my 336 was blued and I much prefer stainless and a standard loop now. The laminate stocks are gorgeous, though.

There was some terrible workmanship turned out by marlin/Remington but I have found that was so last year thank goodness. I just bought a marlin 45 70 gbl . Out of the box was NO flaws. In fact the action was smoother that a Henry I was looking at which I thought was unbelievable. I think Marlin/Remington has fixed their quality control now or either I am extremely lucky because my 45 70 is a beast, holds 6+1 which means 7 bears
