A look at my Marlin XS7 bolt action in 308 Winchester, with a quick look at some reloads I’m working up for it. #bureauofpropaganda #brownells #reloading #boltaction #marlin #XS7 #308 #308winchester #hunting #shooting
Man that thing is gorgeous! I’d be a tad careful about using someone else’s load data without backing it down a tad. Just seems there can be a lot of variables. Just something I tend to do to err on the side of caution. I’m bad about not cycling the bolt all the way back and short stroking it. Pretty good groupings though with this load other than the one flyer…looks like a great place to start. Be curious about what speed you’re getting. Awesome video brother! Hope you have a great weekend!
I had looked up the load data before loading it, and it was on the warm side of middle. I don’t load the hottest load right out of the gate anyways, for that reason. Who knows when someone might do a half grain or so more than max, to make them pissin hot loads… I’ve found that normally when I read multiple posts on several forums and they have roughly the same data, it generally a good place to start once I make sure it isn’t max loading
@@j_c_hunt good call on that. Yea I saw you were still a grain under max load. I’ll typically look at loads in my Hornady book and also online at the powder makers website for loading data. Hodgdon’s reloading data center is pretty good. Looks like you’re all set for deer season this year!
It looks really nice with the wood stock can you tell me where you got the stock from I have the same exact rifle with the plastic stock, would like to change it to wood
If your looking for a good deer, hog load and dont plan on shooting over 250yds in the 308. Try the Barnes Ttsx, or Hornady cx in 130gr, or the 168gr for bigger game, or less damage, but more penetration. I use them in my 308 and 300wm and they work well. The 130s are wicked on deerin the 308, dont do it in the 300wm though. Those sst have been discontinued for a reason, their junk on game and aren't reliable. Perfect though for game you dont plan on eating or saving the pelt on like coyotes.
Good to know. I appreciate the advice! I’ve got plenty of coyotes around to shoot with them. I’m gonna look into other bullets like you mentioned, and some soft point stuff also eventually.
@@j_c_hunt My favorites i use, if i can find them, from top to bottom are, Barnes ttsx, Federal Terminal Ascent, Nosler Accubond, Nosler Partition. Low for price but well built Federal Fusion are a great inexpensive round for the cheap stuff, and last is Remington core lokt if i have to, but not prefered due to the hard unbonded lead the that like to shatter in the cavity and get into places it shouldnt be. I preffer the cleanest meat i can get due to the fact we only get one deer a year, and i try to get as much unruined meat as i can off the deer. Deer are no harder to kill than they were a hundred years ago, so you dont need fancy bullets for them, though if you want the most out of the deer meet you gotta spend a little more. One expensive bullet to get the best meat you can eat is cheap for me to consider what im getting in the end.
@Longtrailside all very good points. The Nosler Partition is one of the soft points I’d like to try also.. I’m also debating casting some to try, once I get all the stuff to do it with..
@@j_c_hunt Partitions are great penatrating rounds, though not the most accurate at long distance due to its design. Meant to hit hard at shorter distances, but a wonderful hunting round. The federal terminal ascent is a newer better design of it. If you going to shoot cast rounds pick up some lead cleaner for your barrel as it will get lead fouling fairly quick depending on how hard or soft you make your rounds.
@Longtrailside I’ll look into those federal then if they are an updated version. I always heard Partitions were hard to beat up to 2-300y. Thanks for all the advice.
