Marooned on flood island: Couple build 110m wall to protect house

One man in Worcestershire has built a 110 metre-long wall around his home to turn it into an island surrounded by flood waters.
Nick Lupton, 59, a retired mechanical engineer, spent four months last summer building a defensive wall around his 17th-century home to prevent the River Severn from lapping against his front door and windows whenever it bursts its banks.
Lupton had to re-mortgage his home, which sits on a floodplain close to the river, to build the reinforced concrete wall, which he said cost "about the same as a small extension".

Useful information for others who live near a flood plain like this, the construction of that wall is substantial. The fact that you can do this yourself, if you’re capable, could be a thing of the future, I’d do it if needed. Well done to the homeowner, you may well be a trendsetter, congrats.

When thr government doesn't do anything to help th situation it's up to the people themselves.

Brits are literally pulling their own teeth. This government are robbers. They take from the people and then stick up two fingers up instead of work for the people.

uk gov spend like 1400000£ everyday on illegal immigrants. imagine spending it on river defences. The problem could be solved on the entire island for that kind of money.

Ideal considering he probably wouldn't be able to get insurance cover for his home with it being flooded so many times.

"So far the walls have withstood ..." Sums up The Times, for if he was in their demographic would read "the walls will withstand"

Unfortunately, physics determines that the water pressure will see water rise upwards within the walled area. A tank requires a base as well as walls.
@julesgosnell9791

that is what a pump is for...
@dgbucko
@dgbucko 4 месяца назад
@@julesgosnell9791 Yeah, but what size pump. Who determines how much water will need to be pumped if the water pressure equalises?
@julesgosnell9791
@julesgosnell9791 4 месяца назад
@@dgbucko Nature determines the amount of water - you would be able to estimate it by looking at the geography, stratigraphy, past events and future predictions. Then you go and buy a pump of capable of moving water more quickly from the inside to the outside than is leaking in / equalising in the other direction....
@dgbucko
@dgbucko 4 месяца назад
@@julesgosnell9791 Yeah, but the walls have created an impermeable barrier. The success of the project though is the permeability of the ground. It looks as though they house is on clay and it does look as though the project has been successful as a result, and if clay, yes, it could be controlled by a pump. If however the ground was more permeable, there would be no resistance to water and the water levels internally would very quickly be the same as external and no pump would be successful due to the volume of water passing up through the ground. Think of it like a boat, with the walls being the side of the hull and the ground being the base of the hull. If the ground is clay, the boat has a bottom and will not leak too much. If the base of the hull is permeable to water, the boat sinks. Same principle here. But, as I have said above, the project seems to be successful, which points to the area being clay. Good job all round.
@julesgosnell9791
@julesgosnell9791 4 месяца назад
@@dgbucko If the ground was very permeable then you would not have gone with this solution in the first place....
