The last bit about leadership is nonsensical. Keep trying though, you're obviously thinking, you're just not breaking it down far enough. Also, you are going to need to expand on what people actually do, what actions, instead of leaving it all nebulous. I think you'll get it once you look at your hierarchy again. Remember you can't determine "most competent" without the "regular" population. Build it from the bottom up, from your sample populace, then break down the specific actions that lead to elevation in the hierarchy. There are some really interesting studies on primates and social hierarchy out there that may help if I'm not explaining that correctly.
