What a lovely and joyous video. It makes me feel genuinely sorry for those hate-filled posters that can't share in the joy and that, like those that jeered and beat the Freedom Riders in America, will be relegated to the dustbin of history.
Yeah, and there’s nothing ‘hate filled’ about your comment expressing hope that people who think differently to you are relegated to a dustbin, _creep._ 🖕
New Zealands residents can be proud of its Parliament. Congratulations for this wonderful decision. No matter whether man/woman, man/man, woman/woman, each love deserves respect and the same rights!
I've never seen scenes like this in a parliament before. Our (British) parliament is so confrontational and belligerent I can never imagine everyone just standing up, united, to sing such a beautiful song, and to celebrate people's love for each other. This video is truly uplifting and shows humanity at it's most superb.
I keep coming back to this, because it was a huge moment that showed the positive things people can achieve together. And that song… Oh, I hadn’t heard Pokarekare Ana before and to hear a Parliament of people singing it is always beautiful
'conservatives in both main parties' yeah right, because an entire half of the national party sitting down and refusing to clap doesn't speak for itself?
It's Feb 2017, life is still normal here in NZ. The sky hasn't fallen, Hell hasn't opened up & everyday is still the same. Where are you Australia? You are seriously lagging behind the rest of the World. 😦
superkiwistar so many straights abandon their children that gays dont even need to have children. Also the worlds overpopulated anyway, gays are doing the world a favour 💅
@@shadowboxing7029 So they don’t deserve the LEGAL protections and benefits of marriage? Did you know that gay couples who aren’t legally married don’t have many rights that straight married couples enjoy? Such as being bedside if their partner is in the hospital? It’s basically saying they should enjoy second class citizenship, along with a second class marriage.
@@shadowboxing7029 It’s just nice and privileged to say the “government should stay out,” when marriage is ONLY given its benefits THROUGH the government. The church has NOTHING to do with it, as marriage is legally a CONTRACT.
This is so special! I really can't wait until Australia also has equality, although I can't really imagine our lot singing so beautifully. There isn't really any way to beat this lovely moment of history.
All of the Polynesian languages have a beautiful, singing quality - which matches the sentiment in this moment perfectly. I've seen this many times in the years since it was posted, and it brings me to tears every time. God often looks down on us and shakes his head at some of the choices and decisions we make. This was one day a people gave Him a reason to smile! "Aroha ki te Ariki tou Atua, me koutou ngakau katoa, i tou wairua katoa, me ki tou hinengaro katoa me ki tou kaha katoa 'te tuarua ko tenei:'.. Kia aroha ki tou hoa tata, ano ko koe 'Kahore he ture nui atu i enei." - Mark 12: 30-31 MAORI
Funny I always thought the God of Christianity is opposed to homosexuality and its adherents have persecuted the homosexual community for countless centuries...now god is a friend of the homosexual community...fuck off with that bullshit...
NO...not when I see hypocrisy...I was stating a fact....the Abrahamic god ( Jews, Muslims, Christians) is not a friend of the homosexual community...this is stated clearly in the doctrines of intolerance in all three faiths. ..
Pokare kare ana is the only Waiata/Māori song I knew for a long time, having first learnt it in early childhood. But now it is rarely heard, and I’ve never heard it sung on a Marae. In fact when I think about it, Ive only heard pakeha sing PKKA, not Māori. So I was surprised it was sung on this occasion
To anyone who issued a homophobic comment, I ask of you, "Why? What makes homosexuality so wrong that you need to say it in front of many others? Why can't you keep it to yourself?".
I'm from France, and gay marriage was legalise pretty soon. I'm not gay, but in France, people did manifest against this new law. I've never be so ashamed about my country... But this video brings me back some kind of faith in human condition. Thanks a lot !
It is a love song (very traditional, kind of a homecoming anthem). Every member of parliament (even those who voted against the bill) stand up out of respect for tradition, each other, and their constituents.
Same here. I am from the USA and and our government will never do this. All it is is just hate. Republican politicians are passing laws against the LBGTQ+ and trying their hardest to overturn the right to same sex marriage
Behold, oh troubled and hurting world! Another touch of the mercy and love of the Lord, another lamp uncovered, and a chorus of souls rejoice! The Lord's good work was done in New Zealand's legislature that day. I wish some of my fellow brethren in Christ could see past the plank in their eyes so that they could see it.
At first I was soo happy that it passed. But then the audience began singing pokare kare ana and I started balling my eyes out because I sang this before and rhis was just sooo beautiful!
I know this comment is 5 years old but whatever, the Air New Zealand version is my favourite: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-FyIvGlLblrk.html
I remember where i was when History was made for us here in New Zealand. I straight up cried my heart out. I'm still waiting for my Partner to Propose to me LOL. ... Come on Australia!! Get with the rest of the World!! - Stop living in the past.

You're making it seem like you're the only one that has problems. Just because it's not easy, does not mean you should feel the need to change your sexuality. But that's just my opinion.
Well sir, maybe you're looking in the wrong places, lol. I didn't think you resented anything, but I do think your choice of words were a bit harsh on yourself.
Chris, do you have an example of a person who was willing to die for a cause that he or she knew to be false? Not "die for a false cause" but "die for a cause that he or she knew was false".
by the same token we don't know how the 'Creator' came to be either. If we can accept that he was 'just there' or 'just appeared' somehow it is equally easy to accept the start of the universe happened the same way is it not?
i love it when someone reinforces the point i was making while trying to refute it "There is however, a tradition of heterosexual marriage in many cultures" which directly contradicts "Heterosexual traditions? There's no such thing". your lack of basic comprehension is utterly astounding
