Women in my family wouldn't survive the Heian. My aunt knocked her husband with an iron skillet when she caught him cheating, and my great-grandmother tried to get my great-grandfather with a block of coal when he wasted some money that was supposed to go for stuff for their kids. My grandmother shot at her son in law for cheating. Her kitchen floor still has the bullet hole.

I was wondering how I’d feel about marriage as a Heian noblewoman, but marriage in that time and culture is so different from my time and culture that they are almost impossible to compare. If my husband had an affair in the Heian era I doubt I’d feel personally betrayed or hurt since it seems more like a business arrangement and not a love marriage. I’d be worried about how that would affect my resources instead. The other downside as a Heian noblewoman is the potential to be killed for having my own affair. Although considering everyone was very wink-wink nudge-nudge about the whole thing I can see how many marriages were probably super chill. “I don’t love you, you don’t love me, but we’ve got a mutually beneficial arrangement here so let’s go bang other people and it’s all good.” This was probably the key to a happy marriage back then. Being a Heian noblewoman doesn’t seem so bad in comparison to the majority of women’s experiences in history, but I am still very thankful for being born in this time and culture.

You get it! 😁 You're right we're all products of our culture, if any one of us lived in those times we'd behave like 90% of people living then.
@boyanpenev9822
@boyanpenev9822 4 года назад
True enough. If he was your husband, you would have been married by your respective families, and chances are neither of you consulted on whether you wanted to marry that particular person. Thus, in many ways it was more of a political and business arrangement. If you had any romantic - or physical -needs that were not taken care of, you would have to either make do or take care of those in an affair. There were probably couples that were lucky enough that they enjoyed each other's company, but often, people had to settle for the next best thing - discretely getting something on the side and closing an eye to their spouse doing the same. I know that in later periods the wife ran the household finances and husbands would be getting their "pocket money" from the missus, but I'm not sure if that was the case for Heian as well. If if were, it meant that a wife's resoures were mostly dependent on her... though if her husband was at court, giving him a solid subsidy was necessary for him to pursue his career there.

There is an entire video explaining how cheating wives was incredibly common in the heian era just because of how boring was the housewife life. To the point it was expected she cheated on her husband as long as she was discreet about it with everyone else (basically the Husband most probably knew of her affairs most times but didn't care as long as the neighbors didn't know) Being married in old Japan was all about social status, and most of the times had nothing to do with love or even commitment, as if it was some kind of job.

The ghosting thing is actually a huge tragedy spoken about in Japanese poetry. This happened to the mother of Michitsuna (nobody knows her name other than that she was a Fujiwara) when she married Fujiwara no Kaneie (no incest, they were distantly related) as his secondary wife. It started out where he'd only visit her like once every few months, then once a year, and then years went by where she got ghosted and became suicidally depressed about it to the point where she seriously considered taking vows but couldn't because she had to protect her son. The Gossamer Diary, her diary and book of poetry, ends abruptly with a knock on the door.

Although it wasn't strictly legal, in English law it used to be that if a husband caught his wife in bed with another man and killed his wife or the person she was with, he could use the situation as a defence against a murder charge. So the Heian position isn't unique. Also, they only got rid of that defence within the last fifty years.
@Amateur_Pianist_472
@Amateur_Pianist_472 5 лет назад
So men just claimed that their wife was cheating and got no jail time? What?
@gerardcoyle2587
@gerardcoyle2587 5 лет назад
@@Amateur_Pianist_472 No. The situation had to be the husband caught his wife and her lover actually in the act of having sex and it was a complete surprise to the husband. It was a "temporary insanity" type of defence, in that such a discovery was such a shock to the husband that he was so enraged he wasn't in his right mind. For that to work, he would have to show to the court that his wife and her lover were having sex when he came upon them, and that up until then, he had had no reason to believe his wife had been unfaithful.
@gerardcoyle2587
@gerardcoyle2587 5 лет назад
@@Amateur_Pianist_472 Also, by defence I don't mean they necessarily escaped some kind of punishment. Basically, the charge would be reduced from murder to manslaughter.

@J3diMindTrix
@J3diMindTrix 2 года назад
Not exactly a defense, it would just be downgraded to manslaughter, it's a crime of passion type situation, which is a real thing, when you act on instinct and you aren't really in your right mind then shouldn't you get a reduced sentence? It doesn't always work though Also I imagine it would work both ways and women could claim this. It also used to be that the only way a woman could claim a divorce (at least in the 19th Century) was due to adultery, and they had to prove this to get the divorce

Charmander Totodile Treecko Piplup Snivy Tut tut tut. Squirtle (fully evolved is a cyborg when you think about it), that fire mole thing (looks like my dog), the axolotl (because axolotls are awesome), turtwig (best type combo in existence for Torterra + roleplaying that you're sitting on its back), I'll agree with you on Snivy for choosing what to play with since it's the coolest looking but in terms of best gen 5 starter you gotta remember the emergency bacon.

Why Charmander and Bulbasaur are better than Squirtle, an answer to 1:27. Reason 1: Strategic Depth Squirtle’s mega evolution is an excellent tactical pick to cover up weaknesses in your team line up. Squirtle line also has the added value of having access to Rapid Spin. That being said, Squirtle line is not a strategy. You can’t sweep with Blastoise. You can’t stall with Blastoise. You can’t set things up with Blastoise. Charmander’s X mega evolution and Bulbasaur’s mega evolution have excellent tactical and strategic depth. Venusaur is an excellent choice for stalling since its Thick Fat ability disallows certain tactical coverage options your opponent may be running. Mega Charizard X has access to Dragon Dance, which allows for sweep potential. Both Charizards and Venusaur have tactical value as well since both can play offensively or without set up moves. Reason 2: Stat Distribution Mega Blastoise is an offensive Pokémon with some team utility. It has excellent offensive coverage, but lacks sustain. That being said, offensive Pokémon are usually fast Pokémon that hit hard. Blastoise most certainly hits hard, but does not have the speed to deliver the damage. Both Mega Charizard have enough Speed to be threatening and Venusaur has sustain in terms of Giga Drain and Leech Seed. Reason 3: Kanto Story Line Picks In the process of going through the story line in either a Gen 1 or Gen 3 game, you’ll have plenty of access to Pokémon that can replace your Squirtle. Staryu is the choice that comes to mind since it is also a special attacker like Squirtle line, but has more speed for more convenient damage delivery. One could also run Cloyster or Gyarados for a physical option, not to mention that Gyarados is super accessible early on in the game, no matter who you pick as your starter. If one is looking for a bulky special attacker, Tentacruel can do just as well as Blastoise, but also has access to Black Sludge support in later games. Meanwhile, Charizard is difficult to replace since the only other special attacker choice is Magmar or Moltres who aren’t available until much later in the game after you get surf. Which means that by the time you get Magmar or Moltres, you probably won’t need a fire Pokémon for much else besides Lorelei’s Jynx and your rival’s Exeggutor. Ninetails is a choice, but has inferior type coverage in comparison to Charizard’s dual STAB. Which means only Moltres really compares in terms of performance. Venusaur has more competition, but is aided by its stat line since Oddish line, Bellsprout line, and Tangela are all inferior in terms of defensive performance in comparison to Bulbasaur line. Exeggutor is a fine pick, but in later generations becomes inferior with the introduction of mega stones and Black Sludge.

Getting caught in the act, means that you really did not respect your husband at all. Or extremely unlucky. The point is that the husband is not expected to enter the bedroom unninvited, or even the house for that matter... Your female servant was suposed to keep a look out for that case too. Hell even if he comes home with that theres the fact she could delay him for a few hours. Keeping the act while the husband is at home is the part that makes this very disrespectfull.

To a certain point, China enforced the Confucian view on marriage more strongly in the later dynasties as a method of social and political control. Before, depending on the social moods at the time, there was greater or less tolerance. Some of the "sneaking" parts of marriage can be seen in ethnic minorities(走婚) in China which was less affected by the state.
