it was not very good to start with but it got better as they progressed and ended on an emotional poignant note. I thought the way the movie was written needed some work. It does not have a clear narrative. Some of the scenes were just put in to showcase the actors or emphasize the conflict. Like the scene where Scarlett meets Paoblo. Or the beginning where Adam Driver comes to visit them in LA. I mean there are many such scenes where you feel they do not fit in the narrative. As for acting Adam Driver is good. Scarlet Johansson is on and off. She fails to portray the confusion in her character as well but Driver does play his character of somebody getting cornered well. The support cast is very good. This movie needed to work on almost 40% of its script and get a clearer narrative in the first 40 minutes. Its not a outstanding movie but it is a decent shot at modern divorce process and tries to do things realistically.

The little details and little cute things is what makes this movie amazing. Like when she ties his shoes, when she says the tea is amazing, when he asks why Cassie had a cake and it made it even worse, etc. Little things are what makes it so realistic and amazing. I don't agree with everyone saying "I don't wanna get married anymore", and this is not the message either. It just says that you shouldn't marry someone who is not giving the same to the relationship as you do and you should always communicate your needs clearly. The world would be a better place and marriages wouldn't end up that way. But as we can see in the movie, after the worst times we can still be human beings with the other person and we can still love each other. Amazing movie.

"You used me so you could get out of LA, and then you blamed me for it!" screams Charlie at Nicole; this statement underscoring the danger of deriving life's essence from another, the unfairness of placing such burden on these ones, all the more so when our expectations aren't met or we evolve and our needs change. In another scene, as Nicole gave a summary of her marriage to Nora, her lawyer, she said: "that's when I realised he truly didn't see me. He didn't see me as something separate from himself," continuing a vein of thought that shows how a relationship once established on a precedence of dependence and an uneven balance of power, becomes almost impossible to correct. They become set in their ways, especially the dominant spouse, and unable to comprehend a reason for change, become resentful of it. One feels gaslighted, the other, railroaded. Scarlett Johansson was captivating in the movie as her emotional spectrum from unhappy woman to stricken lover to fledgling independent woman, whose silent cries and lone tears - sometimes in the space of a scene - helps illuminate the complex nature of divorce; it isn't necessarily as simple as not loving your spouse anymore or because you cannot forgive and move past their errors, that sometimes it's because they are unwilling or incapable of making changes into being the persons that we now need. It was also quite an education into the viciousness and mercantile nature of divorce in contemporary America, where truth is contrived, law is exploited, and winning depends on how much you are willing to pay to recruit your own a***hole.

*spoiler alert* I honestly felt like she was being the selfish one though it was painted out he was selfish one throughout the movie, I was rooting for them both and was totally on her side in the very beginning, and then as the movie went on, I really did believe she was happy until she one day realised she was not, and then their marriage deteriorated, and ofcourse he made the fatal error of having an affair. I was on both of their sides, hers initially, but some how I ended up on his side because I felt that it was him that had to adjust and relocate and give up his career for her dream, which for a large part of their marriage she didn't even realise she had. It's like he became the villian for not realising her dreams even though she never clearly knew them or how to express them herself. It was an amazing, insightful and very realistic movie. Maybe the moral of the story is, don't get married until you feel fufilled, clearly he was fufilled and she wasn't and in looking for fufilment it led to the breakdown of their marriage.

i just feel like their divorce could have been avoided if they had COMMUNICATED with each other and listened. if they had stuck through with the marriage counselor/therapist, they'd have learned communication and listening skills. i truly believe you can still better yourself and achieve your dreams while being in a relationship. maybe, instead of fulfillment, the moral of the story is to love yourself enough to know how to communicate the things/dreams you want in life. but i guess maybe that is the same thing as fulfillment.
@teabag1004
@teabag1004 4 года назад
You have to realize she was in no place to be looking for her dreams. She was the full time main caretaker for their child while he was chasing his dreams. She was part of his plays but more as a sidekick. She mentioned that he had gaslighted her many times and didn't listen when she would try to open up, address problems, and state how miserable she was. That can't been drawn out on film unless you get really in depth with portraying their marriage years but this movie is about the divorce. So we just get mentions here and there but from what we can gather, she tried to communicate and it didn't work. She took action to own her happiness and dreams after years of sacrifice. I don't see that as selfish, just as much as it wasn't "selfish" the husband chased his own dreams for years while she was expected to stand down to support him. It's what you do when you love someone, you make sacrifices and compromise. He didn't appreciate that and didn't take care to make sure she was happy too, and communication failed, and when she found out about the affair she took action..

You kind of right by quoting the idiocy of their arguments towards divorce. I would either say that the movie is a nutshell or I would say that this movie depicts accurately what drives people into failure in marriage, ego and selfishness basically. The movie wasn't empty as far as I'm concerned it described situations that most couple have lived and endure till today and will endure eventually. The movie had substantial elements to its composition and I have some things to meditate on in hope of being ready for whatever comes for me in terms of relationship.

The breakdown of any relationship is sad but the portrayal of this separation rings true, and Noah (the director) really wrote from his heart, told his own experience here and yet I was so invested in the characters. A lot of people relate to this movie on a personal level, but it’s great art that makes everyone relate to it because it taps into the soul we all have

I saw this last week at Film Fest 919 in Chapel Hill NC. It was my favorite film of the festival, but this trailer is WAY too upbeat for this movie. This is a much more somber and darker film about a Marriage falling apart. Still brilliant though

nero12345789 I get what you mean. I havent seen the film but this trailer kind of make me want to root for them to be together in the end and fall in love again. But considering this is Baumbach, I truly doubt that is where it is headed 😭

Thanks for that because I loved the tone from the first teaser & this trailer did seem way too upbeat compared to the teaser.

I knew going into this that it was not a typical they get back together film, but this was gut wrenching to see. The acting is what kept me enthralled. I could have easily been bored, but not with the passion these two put into each and every scene. Bravo and kudos!

One of the things no one has talked about is how this and other divorces spiral in such acrimony that you have to pay lawyers $900/hr to get you what you want; be it a house, bank account or child. If you can't sit down with the person you married and find compromise, then you made the wrong choice in the person you married or the person you married made the wrong choice when they said "yes" to you. It speaks to how cavalier people are towards the contract signed when you enter a marriage. It's for life, better or worse - that's the solemn oath one takes. You better be DAMN sure this is the right person for you or you're setting yourself up for this kind of misery and expense.

You may won't believe, but before your comment I thought differently. (Sorry, I m from Austria (not Australia)) Your words may help a little to reconsider my relationship and how I speak to my partner when we have a fight. I Never thought your way, cause for me I'ts kind a normal to overreact when you feel missunde rstood by the Person you Love the most. Sometimes is nearly impossible to just sit and stay calm when your Futureplans with your Partner seems to Fall apart by just some stupid different oppinions. I think it's Not that easy but I deffinitely will think about your words the next Time i want to yell at him in sorrow and frustration... maybe it helps...

I remember i asked my Mom once how amazed i was they have been married after all this yrs and she answered something about taking marriage seriously they got married for life i don't mean to say if they had been unhappy they would have stayed married Is very rare to see couples stay together now i always tell them how lucky i feel

Some people feel 100 percent sure when they get married. But people change over time and feel miserable and don’t even know why they feel miserable and don’t even know what they want anymore. That’s why we can never be sure, we can really only try our best to be committed.

Mêlée Placid oh already did. I really liked that movie a lot, but this looks like it’ll clear that additional benchmark of pulling at my heartstrings and challenging me on a deeper intellectual level. Not to call Joker dumb, but this is a Noah Baumbach film and it’s definitely reaching for something deeper

Justin Zarian such a beautiful thing about different genres. :) I did find Joker super deep and multifaceted, one of the most I’ve ever seen. Due to its being a societal/political commentary on everything from the mental illness/how it forms/how one descends/the role of the system and what failings contribute...tipping points, repression, what leads to criminal behavior, and so much more. There are so many layers and I’m still thinking about it daily, days later! Being in the medical field, these issues are on the forefront. I don’t even watch super hero/ villain movies normally... it was a colleague who recommended it! They’d seen it 4 times already!! Interested in this film and what thoughts/insights it will provoke too...as human behavior and relationships are a passion of mine. Enjoy your movies :)
