Being Married to a Pilot (What it is NOT)
Today I am sharing what being married to a pilot is not like. There are misconceptions of the pilot life. There is an ugly reality that is really beautiful if you can see the pilot wife lifestyle from a more realistic perspective. I have tips to help your marriage before it travels to the wrong destination so buckle your seat belt and raise your window shade into my life as a pilot’s wife.
I will share birds’ eye views of what I have learned about being married to a pilot that will help your marriage take off safely, with no turbulence mid-flight, and have smooth landings every year. Peter Weber is a pilot from ABC’s show #thebachelor and is picking a wife. But marriage to a pilot is NOT exotic travel every week, first class seats, luxury hotels and romantic restaurants all over the world. Marriage to a pilot is not like the typical married life. #pilotlife #pilotwife

Your point about the lies we tell ourselves vs the truth of who we are in Jesus' eyes just brought me to tears. Such an important statement to take to heart for any relationship. Wow, I learned alot watching you describe what life is like through a pilot wife's eyes. There's much I cannot relate to, but there are some things I can. My husband is a retired police officer, and I know what it's like to have attended celebrations, weddings, holidays and even family events without him. It seems like I was always hoping the next days off or furloughs were soon coming. I fondly (yes, fondly) remember trying to keep a newborn from crying enough to wake him up, then a happy, loud toddler. I wish your husband safe travels in his career, and hope you keep making wonderful memories to share.

Your advice is helpful in all relationships not just with pilots. I really enjoy your videos, your personality, and your take on things. I’m taking my partner (of 45 yrs) to Kauai next May first class all the way, penthouse resort, etc. I found your video about the island and have been following you ever since. Omgosh you two are so cute together! 💕🥰🥰💕 Happy Anniversary early - I just have this feeling that I have flown under his wings but I pretty much only fly one airline so not possible. Lol .. I love that you are Christian and finally posted how it works for you in the video. ❤️ I know that from a friend who was a pilot for years (married) mentioned that there are others that pilots who do decompress in another way 🤨 after flights (connect). Thank you. This is excellent advice and can be applied to many situations. My husband is a long haul semi driver and gone for 2-3 weeks at a time. Once for 7 weeks. Our children are grown but this would be very hard for a young wife with little children. Thank you for all of the positive suggestions. That decompress when he gets home is a real thing😊.

I have been with my pilot boyfriend for 3 years now, I love how committed he is to our relationship, he keeps me updated about all his movements and activities etc and it makes it so much easier since we are in different states at the moment. I’m seeing this in October 2023 after enjoying many of your travel tips videos this past year. I’ve adopted some changes and made recommended purchases that have made travel easier and better. So much wisdom and maturity here for really all women in marriage. The added aspect of being separated is part of many relationships where spouses have different work schedules. Lots of wonderful tips, Laurie. I’m not married to a pilot, but I am married to a man who has traveled at least 50% of the time for the last 30 years. And sometimes it’s been more like 75 to 100% of the time. It is challenging, and yet keeping the lines of communication open and realizing that you both have to give 100%, none of this 50-50 thinking. We celebrate our 30th anniversary on June 2.

That was a great video! Thank you for sharing your faith and the truth about being a pilot wife. My husband was a 777 captain when he retired after 30+ years with a major airline. We moved several times and he commuted several times. I understand and agree with everything you said in this video. I wish every women who contemplates marrying a pilot would listen to it. It is a different life and sometimes can be difficult but we had 49 years of marriage and it worked for us. Thanks again!

I just watched this for the heck of it, I am not married to a pilot but he at times travels for work being self employed, he was in another state when covid started last winter and was gone for 3 months, without dragging on in detail your suggestions can actually be applied in non pilot wife marriages, husband is currently away helping his dad for mostly no paycheck while I am alone at home with our 4 year old and 15 year old. in a fixer upper house, I am thankful it's not winter this time. The working on being content with yourself is a struggle but a work in progress. It may sound silly this comment but it is a nice and kind of uplifting watching your videos.

Hi stumbled across and enjoy your videos🌸 your suggestions & thoughts are spot on ! I'm currently dating (very seriously) an FO and I'm a former FA & GA, so I basically understand his schedule! However the tables have slightly turned because I quit the airline industry to work in the medical field. I'm frontline dealing with the pandemic, so now (because aviation has slowed down and the hospitals are overflowing)...we rarely see each other (again😊), but we talk & text a lot!! we're strong in our friendship & commitment to each other, so hopefully we'll be fine ! I was a lineman’s wife for 45 years until his retirement. He, too, worked long hours and was gone several days at a time. You are right on when you say that we need to love our husbands like Jesus loves us. There’s no better way to build a strong marriage. Laurie, another great video. I agree with other commentators that your advise is good for any couple. I especially like your advise of living BELOW your means to have money later. Too many people get into debt, or manage their finances poorly. I often suffer from "retail therapy" and I'm not married to an often absent pilot. I wish your son well in math. I majored in it (then never used again). Not everyone "gets" the number play of math, but it is a good subject to learn logical thinking to solve a problem.

This is amazing! I am a pilots wife with a 2 year old, I am originally from the UK and moved to the Netherlands to support his career and also mine. It can be hard being in a different country when he's away on layovers with support with a young toddler, but we have learnt to adapt, and the more into his career we are enjoying the perks, however I think I personally still need to get used to the unpredictable schedules 😖 it's been a struggle.

Good solid advice for ANY marriage. It took me a long while to recognize that I needed to be complete on my own, hubby too, so that we could together compliment each other's lives. If a person isn't whole on their own, another human being isn't going to fill that space, and that's a terrible burden to put on that other person.

Definitely close sounding to being a military wife....including the stand-by tickets (only add cargo planes might be your plane). When they come home, some military guys want to sleep all week, some want to go out, others want parties, and others want to push everything off the table and "get busy." Travel insurance is a must, especially for active duty. I lost count how many times I have had to file a cancellation claim because he got a phone call. Honestly the best people for these types of marriages are introverts or at least somewhat introverted I think. I say that because I find the extroverts tend to be less independent than introverts. You are also right about staying busy when they're gone.

Luanne21 Agree, many points are like a military wife..... only when they are gone it is for much longer than for 2-5 days. Months is more like it, I feel for all you ladies, I did it for 42 years while raising our 2 daughters. It can be done when you are strong . Power on ladies!

Just found this video. I am married to a pilot . 20 years in the military, 20 years corporate pilot. I can relate to all of your comments. Know yourself! We are now retired 21 years, purchased our own plane and we fly together all over the the USA,Canada and the Bahamas. I finally became a pilot when I was 65. It’s has been a wonderful life (forgive the pun). Your videos are fantastic.

TravelTipsbyLaurie you’re right about being cautious with nonessentials in the budget. DH & I are in the higher risk age and health categories so we have a cruise booked for next spring- that will be fine but the one for the Panama this fall we were just talking over as a likely pass for now till things settle down. We will take the next few months to decide but our travel is narrowing down to essentials only. I don’t worry too much about the flights- I have a system- much like your system. I am immune compromised and I have reason to trust my system- wiping down my area with a sanitizer, liberal hand washing & sanitizer gel plus using the filtered air nozzle above me to create a positive pressure air “bubble” of clean Hepa filtered air in my vicinity. I don’t get sick after a flight anymore like I did before these little precautions. Normally I trust the cruise lines- we never get the Noro virus even when it’s really blowing through on board. Again similar system. But till we know more about the transmission of the new virus & the cruise lines get a handle- we are backing off cruising. I figure less than a year & they’ll have the virus habits nailed, as well as a good plan to stop the spread on board. And another Christian couple here, we pray nightly for this thing to stop.

My husband is not a pilot but - wow- the scheduling/time apart and having to be independent sounds just like my life/marriage 😂 I’ve fixed my own leaking fridge, beeping oven, and hearing odd sounds, and many holidays/fam bdays without him. I totally felt all you were saying. Interesting info and funny intro 😂 I once knew of a pilot/realtor who had a wife expecting back home- well, his wife went into labor and a passenger was ummm “bumped” off the next plane for him to get a seat 💺. 😂 I may have to get that book 📚 😆

Nice insight into being a pilot’s wife. As a single woman who is not married, but consider myself to be someone’s future wife one day, I really appreciated this video. Whilst it’s aimed at pilots wives, I believe non- pilot wives, new wives, wannabes wives can all take something from this. There are times when I get really frustrated when I have to tend to things in my house on my own, or have to deal with trades people to get works / repairs done. Often thinking, when am I going to meet my husband and then I wouldn’t have to deal with this? Forgetting that having a husband does not automatically guarantee that I wouldn’t have to deal with such matters! Your outlook has made me appreciate that my independence can actually be of value to a future husband, as being an independent woman, I find can often be portrayed as being a negative thing nowadays.

I've thoroughly enjoyed this video & I can so relate on so many levels. My husband a project manager & engineer, so I usually get to see him 6 weekends a year & it's been like that for 25 years. We just make it work & we know each others rules & it works for us, even though it's hard at times. Greetings from South Africa

My marriage was about the same because he worked in a factory 6 or7 days and overtime. So I did most the fixing ,cleaning ,shopping ,bills paying school activities,you name it. He did the yard and helped when possible. You do have to like being self reliant. Married over 50 years. Now retired we enjoy being together but separate too as needed.

Sounds like life married to a fire fighter. Mine works 48 hrs at one then goes to 2nd job for another 12hrs. Then rest of days off works 2 and 3rd jobs. I agree, u have to be good at being alone. The eating at home while he eats out is so relatable! Wish u lived closer...we could hang out!

Thanks for watching! He is hands-on and helped a ton with our only child when he was home. We also lived on a street where everyone was outside and that helped, I only worked for 6 months after our son was born. Now I work on videos lol. We knew he would make more money later and I enjoyed staying home so we did not spend alot those toddler years.

I am so grateful to hear what you have to say. I have been married to my husband for a year and 3 months and we are struggling. He is still working on getting his flight hours but has a start date with an airline for next summer. He struggles with pornography/sex addiction and my fear is of what will happened when he is gone for so many days at a time. We are Christians too and my husband actually has a meeting with our pastor next week. I believe Jesus has redeeming powers to help us and I’m trying not to loose hope, but it’s hard to see the light at the end of the tunnel. Prayers please.

I am not a pilot wife. My husband works shift work in a hospital surgical department as an anaesthesia tech. He works long hours and can get called out all night for surgeries. It is a stressful job. And with covid it is even more stressful. We all have to work on communication and what each other needs. Thank you for the insight into your life.

"Pull your kids out of school"... Absolute Truth!!! We did this all of the time... while we would get "push back" for doing this...our family unit was strengthened by our travels. Neither of my children suffered academically. In fact, both are college graduates (summa and magna cum laude) with successful careers. Now we all travel together with their families and children... Even during the school year. 😊 Kids can expand their education while traveling the world and seeing real life in other places.

Bonjour and Oui! I would just keep communicating about what would be helpful for you when he first gets home and what is helpful for him when he first arrives too. It's tough with young kiddos since you will be so tired. It was the weekends that were boring because I could not invite ourselves to someone's house for a play date lol. I also invested in preschool classes so I could have a break. We also would do the whole just us sit on the sofa after all the greetings and talk while the kids played. They knew it was then mom and dad time so that helped get some conversation time. Our biggest hurdle with finances was to stop going out to eat so often. And we did it.

So exciting to hear your a christian family! Even though my husband and I were Christian's, he decided to leave me and my daughter. It was like I was Princess Diana and he had a Camilla. Anyway, I had made attempts to try and save up to take my daughter on a plane somewhere. It became a bucket list thing. But being single, getting no support, stuff like dentist bills and car bills took the little I had. But this year, with the pandemic, I've had more chance to save up. I can see the light. My cousin, who got married during the pandemic said they'd have something big next May in California. My mom said, "take your daughter and GO!" So I am hoping and praying things open up and is safe to travel without 14 day quarantine. I came upon your videos and am enjoying the planning, dreaming of it all.

When you move to a new area, how do you make friends? Are friends in your circle all pilot wives or do you meet folks who aren't in the aviation field? I was married to a pilot (Air Force and Corporate) for 31 years. Making friends as a military wife was easy, we were all in the same situation; being married to a pilot in "civilian" life was a lot different! We know how to find a way or make a way; if I can't fix it maybe the neighbor next door can! I no longer have to deal with crazy schedules, etc., but I'm still wondering; how do you make friends? Love your tips and I'm looking forward to more totally no-stress trips.

Hi, for us we find a church and get involved. But yes, just volunteering or going to neighborhood activities is a way. It can be hard! We also invite people here who we meet.

My husband was in sales, gone 4 days a week and like your pilot, when he came home he didn't want to eat out or have company. You gave excellent suggestions! We moved to several states as well, bible studies were a salvation for me and made many friends that way. When he first came home, I would have the kids play and give us an hour to just talk. I have learned lately!! Stop watching flight aware. ✈️it can be worrisome, I watched Dave's plane make a big circle in the air , or started to turn around omg so many times. Love your channel , no one knows . Lol we had dinner with a couple once , my friend asked how do you it? How do you stay so happy, Dave's reaction " I'm gone alot". Omg.

Great insights Laurie! I won't be marrying a pilot in the foreseeable future but I enjoy hearing your perspective. I'm thinking that marrying a pilot might be good for women who are already location-independent (aka digital nomads) and can work via their laptops from anywhere in the world if they choose. 😃❤

Leah Veal, this video applies as much to a business man, civil servant or just about anyone as it does to a pilot. I am the third generation in my family that had/have husbands who travel extensively. My grandfather worked for the federal government out of one of the regions and I remember him travelling, my grandmother had to get used to it from the very early days of her marriage, my mum followed suit when she married my dad and in fact one of his early jobs had him home 4 weekends a year and there was actually 1 day where he checked into 3 hotels in 3 different towns, that job lasted with him about a year as I had come along and then my husband didn’t travel over night quite as often, but, I never knew for a lot of years when he would get home.
