beautiful marseille . home of the fishing boats and the vintage frenchmen ! if these streets could talk my freind ! what joys they would sing ! its beautiful with the joy of internet we can still see these wondeful european cities have not lost there charm !
As far as I understand, several large-scale reconstructions have been carried out in the city. In preparation for my first visit to Marseille in 2014, I read about the terrible state of the neighborhoods south of the main avenue of the city, La Canebière, and advice not to delve into them, but even then I did not find anything like that.
I'm in Marseille as I write this. And I believe the truth is in the middle. One day we went to the train station for an excursion to Aix-en-Provence, and the station (Gare de St. Charles) was a complete wreck. Trash absolutely everywhere. We walk up and down Canebière every day. It has a lot to offer, but the odors in certain pockets are awful, and that is not limited to Canebière. Foul odor and trash can be found in many places. Public urinating does not seem to be discouraged at all. Also, in many parts of town, the graffiti is out of hand. There are beautiful buildings that are essentially ruined by tasteless graffiti. But there are areas where the architecture shines. On the bright side, the people are pretty friendly, or at least ambivalent to our presence. It is said that if you don't speak French, don't bother with Marseille but I find the opposite to be true. Most people that work in tourism speak some amount of English. Between that and my miniscule amount of French (and I'm giving myself too much credit), we've gotten by just fine. Also, there really is lots to do. We've been here for nearly a month, and while we've knocked off the major items, we've still got a few of the minor ones to cross off. If you like pizza, Marseille is a place you should enjoy. Pizza places are everywhere. The food is generally good, but like Paris, overrated imho. Aix-en-Provence and Cassis are short trips away, and really are beautiful. Chateau d'If and Frioul are short ferry rides away, and both are well worth the effort.
@johncheeseman1781 yep i visited marseille 1 month ago for like a week and a half and u was surprised a lot by the trash in every street even in the city center and the graffiti thing is out of control they don't care if it's a historical building or a new one or a park for kids EVEN BUSSES are full of graffitis, I was surprised AF because I saw a lot of vids like this that made me think about a clean and ordered city but the reality is quite different 😀. I'm italian and I visited Naples too the Italian city that they compare to marseille and I swear even Naples (considered the worst city in italy) is wayyy cleaner and livable only few quartiers can be compared to the messy marseille. I hope so fucking much that they'll do something about this lack of order because it stills a very beautiful city with some of the best architectures I've ever seen 🔥 and BTW the coast line still awesome 👌
@@nam8865 Agreed. Coastline is quite nice, the Old Port is still a beautiful area. Palais Longchamp is great. Notre Dame de la Garde (and the little train that gets you there). That's what I mean. There's great stuff here, you just have to go through some general unpleasantness to get to the good stuff. Also, the fresh fruit and vegetables at the open markets is really good. Best plums I've ever had. Good tomatoes too. Clean up the streets, discourage public urination, pick up dog poo. We think of Florence and how clean that was, and how safe and vibrant the streets of the historic district are. We walked those streets to the wee hours of the morning and never felt unsafe. Never worried about stepping into poo or a stream of pee. I think Marseille could be that way, but probably never will.
