Not sure about the usage of the word peasant in the translation. It makes you think of feudalism and a peasant doesn't own the land he works, he leases it from a lord. Feudalism never really existed in northern Europe so there isn't really any word for peasant either. The word he uses in Swedish is bonde (a farmer) and they owned their own land and had representation in the government.

I can't believe that there are many Finnish-speaking people writing comments here saying that his Finnish was excellent. He obviously reads his speech (very slowly) and has a very strong accent. As for the substance of the speech, some of the things he says are utterly self-serving and overblown: "Ylpeänä tunsin kuuluvani tähän kansaan." (Proudly, I felt I belonged to this nation.) Let's see: He was a nobleman who grew up as part of the Swedish speaking elite (his family was extremely wealthy), utterly removed from ordinary Finns, speaking a few words of Finnish only to order the servants about. When his family lost their money, he moved to St. Petersburg ( Finland was a part of the Russian Empire at the time) for better prospects. He became a career soldier in the tsar's army, in which he served for 30 illustrious years, until the Revolution. He became so close to Tsar Nicolas II that he kept his portrait in his bedroom for the rest of his life. He had no use for the Bolsheviks, so he retired and left for Finland. ( He was not too crazy about democracy either.) He had no feeling of kinship toward ordinary Finns until they offered him a chance to become a great hero as the "White General" leading the winning side in the Finnish Civil War, which commenced shortly after Finland had declared its independence from Russia in 1917. I think he was a glorified soldier of fortune. (Mannerheim played an important role in WWII as the commander of the armed forces. What can I say, we lost the war but kept our independence. Would we have accomplished that with someone else at the helm? I don't know.)
