crank the mids and the bass and you get a pretty decent plexi jtm kinda ac/dc sound - better sounding than most rigs with the handwired amps and the solodallas etc. been there - i have 3 afds one with 6550, el34 and kt66 but you have to dial it in to sound fat and juicy the 34 mode is just too thin... otherwise one of the best marshall amps ever made (sounds also good at bedroom levels with the adjustable loop)... and i had a handwired jtm45/100, sv20h, 1987x, 1959hw, jvm 100hjs, Solodallas SD50, etc. etc. all sold now...
The afd is a great high gain amp and you can certainly do a lot with it. I didn’t like it that much for lower gain stuff as the guitar rollback wasn’t that fantastic (to my ears) with my gear. Tried the 6550s and the kt66s but just not for me. But hey different amps work for different players. I’m loving my sd50, Bluguitar amp1 mercury and my custom modded Marshall. Cheers
The power control is not a poer amp volume control. Its actually an attenuator. The gain knob allows a certain amount of signal into the preamp tubes so they clip, the master volume controls the amount of signal that goes into the power tubes. And the power control is an attenuator place after thd ouput tubes and before the speaker outs that goes from 100 watt down to 0.1 watt
Not really. This one changes the voltage on the output tubes. It's not an actual attenuator between the output transformer and the cabinet. So it does change the power. :)
Hi. Once again (as usual 😁) great demo. Your SG sounds really great. Is it always the BK Riff Raff In bridge? I've in mind to make an upgrade for my 2015 standard SG which has Classic 57. I'm trying to find a new bridge PU. What is also your neck PU on your SG? Thanks
do you know that it is possible to replicate this amp in the helix. I developped a little process based the on kemper patent to so. Having taken a look at the schematics of the AFD, the sound is really coming from the high pass filter in the first stages of the amp. You can mimic very easy that with a eq before the helix JCM800. Just hicut around 350-500 and boost the level to compensate the gain loss, and for the #34 hicut aroud 700hz and boost even more. we can exchange in pm in would like to know my process
Indeed, very sad. Because I loved the tone he had on apocalyptic love and that following tour he did. Now his tone is oké, but I'm not a big fan of the jubilee. It's very reliable for him and they are widely available. But I'm not the biggest fan of that tone.
It was a fan-service kind of thing, I don't think he ever intended to use it as his main amp, since he's already got the #34 which the #34 channel is based off of.
