In depth review this is part one of the Marshall AFD100 Amplifier. I wanted to show the amp inside and out so go ahead and see what this thing is really made of.
Please note that in this video I don't cover every last aspect of the unit - that is on my review on my website at www.tonymckenzi... and that written review includes conversations with Santiago Alvarez who is a designer at Marshall Amps in the UK. He contributed greatly to that written review and it covers many things not covered in this video review.
All video is copyright - do not download and remember to visit www.tonymckenzi... for more reviews including many not on RU-vid at all of guitars, amps, pedals and much more.
Please do subscribe and ring the bell.

Tony amazing video as always. You are a true inspiration. My manager at work is 54 years old and has been bugging me for a year to help him get into guitar and finally the other day I took him to the local Music store and he bought his first guitar. I immediately told him about you, and all of your work and it really made him get inspired and get to work to learn his chords and stuff. I'll be showing him your videos next week. Thank you for being such a great musician and amazing person.

The Brigtness of this amp is Brutal ! Really didn't care for it . Great demo.

I can agree with that and its a comment many have made over the years since the review. Indeed I later sold it partially for the same reasoning - but they do still go for big bucks here. Thanks for watching.

Great review so far, I'm definitely getting this amp. Even though I'm a fan of Slash's playing, I feel that this amp is just a good Rock 'N' Roll amp in General

I got one of these recently out of curiosity and over time I just can't get away with how thin it sounds. I'm running it through a 1960av but the amout of treble is just too much for me. Features wise I think it's great, I just wish it was more tweakable or do you know of a mod that can be done to overcome this treble issue. I guess a lot of people are going to reply with 'why did you buy it', well I got it for the features really. Really wish it could be thickened up a bit.

@tonymckenziecom I think you misunderstood me. I was referring to the internal shots of the amps circuits, ie the guts of the amp.

iv been through your website. cool one i say. i was actually talking about the marshall production. they never mentioned ken`s name. marshall wanted his work there and ken only wanted his name be credited for it in return for his work. marshall never mentioned his name of any sort.

@tonymckenziecom That's the whole point of it the power limiter, you are supposed to get great cranked sounds at any volume, Plexis sound great flat out - which is in most instances is way too loud, this addresses that issue, we'll see what you reckon in your full review :)
@andyrgale
@andyrgale 13 лет назад
Thanks for the review, but reviewing your review I note that you don't even properly mention the cool auto biasing / power tube distortion at low volumes, the main groundbreaking feature of the amp - you found the input jack more interesting than that pcb when looking inside ...

the only thing kevin o connor wanted for the power scaling without payment was to have his name on it. marshall did fuck him up on that one.

I love my JVM, your website couldn`t be found when i tried the link, and sounds great through my Jem, eahch to their own, so what if it doesn`t have a proper choke, youtube reviews are always hit and miss anyway everybody hears differently. it seems to me you spend alot of money looking for negatives.

Hey Tony, how does this sound compared to the JS JVM???
@tonymckenzieofficial
@tonymckenzieofficial 9 лет назад
+Ed Berger The AFD sounds decidedly more toppy. Also once you set the EQ nicely for one channel, change channels and it sounds wrong (at least to me). The JS JVM is exceptionally good. Hope it helps.

+Ed Berger AFD100 is brash, unforgiving and ruthless. Really nice rock amp, really good gig amp, knobs to the northeast and that's it, if you need or want to play hard, if you want to hear what you play in a band, if you want that other players hear what you play, if you want the audience hears what you play, do you want it sounds good, get one and you'll find that all other amps you can throw into the lake...also JS-JVM.I had the JS-JVM, it was like mosquitoes, afd100 is like an earthquake, JVM is a versatile and AFD100 is one trick pony but it's so cool! so what things are important to you

why are they shielded ?
@tonymckenzieofficial

Often to reduce internal induced hum or sometimes as CE standards - if I got the question correct... thanks for watching.

The AFD100 is discontinued and is rising in price slowly these days on places like eBay or Reverb.com as is the YJM100 (Malmsteen) head. Both were very limited manufacture.

Hey Tony, what can you tell us about how it cleans up? I noticed a majority of guys do straight to 10 sounds, and sometimes they "back off" the volume although we never get to know if it's on 7, 4 or 1. Some amps loose dynamics on ten, and when you try to back off the volume on full drive, nothing happens until you reach 2. How does AFD fare in that regard?
@tonymckenzieofficial
@tonymckenzieofficial 8 лет назад
+Frostensen It will clean up with the volume for sure... but you can get cleans of course. Ultimately remember though that this amp is very 'toppy' and when one channel is 'right' the other is 'off ' - at least that was my conclusion after using it for some time. That fact caused me to eventually sell it. Hope these comments help and thanks for watching.
