@GoogleEqualsEvil
@GoogleEqualsEvil 3 года назад
@@johnmarshall3903 The irony and hypocrisy of someone calling Friedman and other amps "copycats of a vintage Marshall" (which isn't true) is off the charts since vintage Marshall's are literal copies of Fender Tweed amps. Specifically, the first Marshall amplifier (JTM45) was a direct copy of the FENDER 1959 5F6-A Bassman *circuit* and everything Marshall produced after that up to the early JCM800's, were just minor modifications of that same Fender 5F6-A circuit. They literally stole the circuit from Fender. And yes, they stole it. When you directly copy someone else's intellectual property without compensating (paying) them, that is theft, period. Personally I'm not a big fan of Friedman's tone (and would never own one), probably because I never liked the "Jose" tone. He basically just took a lot of Jose Arredondo's modifications (and others) from the late 70's / early 80's and incorporated them into his amps (two examples right off the top of my head - the 2.7k cathode resistor being repeated in the preamp and the diode clipping for extra saturation / distortion). That said, a Friedman of equivalent price is a far more versatile amp than any vintage Marshall, offering 2-3 channels with a lot more distortion and more tone shaping ability. In regard to price, a vintage style Marshall is a MUCH simpler amp with far fewer components, which makes them cheaper to manufacture. That includes the 1959HW shown in this video. It's significantly overpriced for what it is. There is nothing about it that is superior in terms of quality of components or manufacturing. On the contrary, the boutique brands like Friedman that are made in the USA, are significantly better quality and cost the same or less than the Marshall 1959HW (which is $3,300). At least this new 1959HW is decent quality, unlike actual vintage Marshall's. Original early Marshall's (60's / early 70's) used the cheapest parts they could find and were some of the worst quality guitar amps ever produced. Their poor manufacturing quality also came from their lack of standardization of parts. When they ran out of a certain value, instead of waiting to resupply with the correct value, they would just use whatever they had on hand. That resulted in many inconsistencies in tone from amp to amp. That's why musicians of that era would go into a musical instrument store and play every Marshall they had to find a good one. That often meant going to more than one store! If you want a stellar Marshall Plexi (1987 / 1959) it's worth it to buy a made in USA boutique version that is better in every way. Bray, Suhr, Germino, etc. Paying more money just for the Marshall (for a circuit they stole from FENDER) name is retarded.

It's 100w at 120v so it uses less than an amp of current, your wall power should be able to supply at least 10 amps so it's not necessary to have a separate breaker. Doing this, however, insulates the amp from interference by the other electronics in your house.

@alexleezer7538
@alexleezer7538 8 лет назад
+Russell Roberts the attenuator should make the volume reasonable. Also, if your playing at home, a 4x12 isn't really needed. You can still get sweet sounds out of a good 2x12. So in conclusion, I would go with the plexi, an attenuator, and a 2x12. That should let you get great plexi tones without blowing the roof off. lol
@Russell1982
@Russell1982 8 лет назад
+Alex Leezer that's awesome, thanks for the advice. I already have a 4x12 but ideally wanted to get a 2x12 to use with it at some point as it just seemed more practical. Maybe I'll spring for the 1959 then and hope I can make it manageable. lol. It was that or the smaller 30 watt jtm45. But I know I'd rather the 1959slp if I thought it'd work.

Great sounding, grew up with that tone but seriously, it's a great sounding, expensive paper-weight. It does one thing, does it very well, but. And don't be fooled into thinking you'll get the tone with an attenuater. A large part of the tone comes from the physics of what speakers do at high volumes, not just the output stage. Helo Ruben. There is no mindblowing differences. I have old plexi's in pcb version, but played with PTB (older) versions too (have one of the swiss specialists in vintage amp sellings two towns away from me). The differences are subtle or greatly negligeable. There could be numerous factors that makes little differences. - Jim Marshall, sometimes, had to pick some different components at other stores. So you don't have exactly the same sound from amp to amp. - The original JMP's are now quite old. Some components could be in the end of their life, or already switching dangerously far away their ideal specifications. That changes the sound too. - Lots of them where modded. And sometimes, for selling with collection prices, where re-originalized. This changes the tones too. - Then, you have the tube factor. You have many different brands, with many subtle variations. Those tube should be operating "in their specs". But often, especially for today's brands, it's not the case at all. This makes the amps operate worse than it should be. So there will not be mindblowing differences between PCB and PTB versions if both are made correctly. Now, the right question would be : "does Marshall put better components in this 1959 HW than in the normal Reissue ?". - > Marshall freaks out there, could you respond to that ?

Hmmm. I've got a Les Paul, a 412 Cab with Greenbacks, big fan of classic rock, and I need an amp head. What to do what to do...

Hi great video. What attenuator can you suggest for this? Can this 100w no master head be handled by a 2x12 greenback? Ty
@BramEngelenMusic
@BramEngelenMusic 9 лет назад
00DirectorsCut00 Well, most likely not, because your cabinet will have a total wattage of 50 watts (if you're using the 25 watters) or 60 watts (30 watters), and your amp's 100 watts, with a good bit of volume you will blow your speakers...If you keep the volume pretty low, it should be safe though, but if you're not going to crank that thing and play clean, just buy a Fender Twin haha! Hope that helps!

I have three JMP Superleads. A '69 Plexi, a '73, and a '74. They're all different but all sound incredible when cranked. Currently I am enjoying the '73 the most. It's just got THE NUTZ.

The 72/73 super leads have more bite and are more aggressive. They have more gain . The pre 72 are warmer and rounder like Pages tone how the west was won. He had some early 69s plexis but didn't start using them as his main stage amps until February 72 but before the 75 tour he had them modded and they became much more biting and strident.. they became even cleaner sounding but less warmth.
