Marshall Origin 20 - How Much Gain Does This Amp Have - Let's Also Run Some Gain Pedals In Front! 

Everyone says this amp has good tones and is an even better pedal platform but no one did a video like this to back up those claims. I’ve messed with this amp in stores trying to decide on it but the stores wouldn’t let me plug a pedal into it to check it out fully. This is the video I needed to see. I like a bit more gain for most of the music I play than this gives. This is the video I needed to see. Thanks Marty!

The tilt is for emulating the tones of combining the two channels of the 4 hole Marshall’s when you jumper the two channels !!

After seeing this, I ordered the Origin 20 head and the Golden Horse pedal, which was a great find on your part. The head will arrive tomorrow. Your efforts will have saved me a lot of time spent twiddling knobs. Keep up the excellent work, sir! BTW, love those speakers. I have a few of those myself.

Great job Marty! I can always watch your videos to demo stuff with the proper rock & 80s metal like it should be. Some channels are always clean sounding but I wanna hear it right - you deliver bro! And that Origin 20 - man that really sound sweet! I mean, people might think a Marshall Plexi must have tons of gain but not really. Bands back then, before the mid/late 80s, used this amp - like you said, KISS (a Marshall Plexi). I almost got one of these in a combo a couple of years ago, but I got the British made JCM800 instead. Love it too 🤘 the way I see it, the 70s to early 80s was the Plexi, then in 80s to early 90s was the JCM800, then the 90s had the JCM900, and the 2000s came the JCM2000. Those are really too much fizzle for me, so I think the Plexi or the JCM800 are outstanding pedal platforms. Just like this Origin 20, I have my JCM800 gain cranked - I think it fattens it up more than anything - then I can add a Boss Super Distortion. But really, you showcased the sweet sound of the Origin20. I may just have to get one of these!!! (Let me know if you want to sell the PM). 🤘🤘

My 50 watt combo loaded with a v30 is awesome. I have never used it in 50 watt mode as it is so loud 25 watt mode is fine for gigs. Excellent value for money.

I run mine with a 2X12 with a Greenback and a V30, great tones, and enough power to gig, no worries !!

WOW! I'm super impressed with that Marshall Origin. The Epiphone sounds good too. I really like that Tumnus pedal.

I believe the tilt knob mimics the channel blending of the 2 volume knob & high / low inputs on the classic 4-hole Marshall amps.

This amp doesn't get enough credit. I don't think it really emulates a plexi but it sounds really good with my tele. Puts meat on its bones and is very punchy and articulate.

I'm about to do the Headfirst mod to mine, which turns it into a JCM800 circuit and adds Jose diode clipping. In doing so I will lose the tube buffered effects loop, which is one of the coolest thing about the amp as is. One of the best ways I've found to use this amp has been to use a Multi- effects modeler as my pre amp, and send it into the return on the loop, totally bypassing the preamp. Your master volume on the amp still works doing this. That tube buffer really acts like part of a preamp for a Multi- effects modeler and then the power tubes add their own additional distortion, making a Modeler sound fantastic. With the mod, my effects loop tube will be an additional gain stage for the original preamp and done away with as a buffer for the effects loop. I will probably add a solid state loop back in, but will sure miss the tube loop. None the less, it will essentially turn the amp into a Jake E. Lee firebreather. Cool video, you are getting some great sounds out of it.

My real OCD is loved by even who hears it and the borrow it for gigs and recording. They are not interested in my other overdrive and distortion pedals. It sounds amazing.

Right on Marty, the Melter pedal sounded fantastic. Some day I may cave and buy an Origin. So many toys, so little time...and cash! Ha!

My take on the Origin series: People like to poo poo these amps, but I think they're just hearing with their eyes. I got a 50h not too long ago and have been loving the trip down memory lane. Your very right about the classic sounds in these amps. Given a proper cab, they require zero modification. I also acquired a Greer Lightspeed to really unlock it. A transparent drive is the way to go over modding one of these if its not having issues. Killer used value too even in todays economy.

was looking to get one of these before they went sky high. i have a dsl40c that i run at 20watts. have it set up as a 3 channel with my p board. the dsl is a very versatiale marshall. great demo dude. i liked it best with the ocd. def would like to get an origon amp.

Recently bought the origin 20. I love the tone of it by itself. But sometimes I want something a little more heavy. So I ended up getting a Joyo Chopper Z and a Berhinger SF300 and can get some pretty gnarly tones out of it.

So I wanted a ‘78 JMP but couldn’t afford it, so a buddy sold me on the Origin 50. I run a Boss delay in the loop, and a DS-1 w/ Keeley mod out front, through a 1985 original 1960A slant cab. MONEY!!!

Hello, are you using reverb? The amp has no reverb correct, so is that a reverb pedal I hear around 7:44?

You got an Archer for $30.00!? I found it. Do you think it measurses up to the J. Rocket or Tumnus? I actually have a 30.00 full size Klon clone. It's decent.

Where is all the delay coming from ? You stated you were going only thru the OD pedals.

I just got the 20C. The clean sound is very nice. My ... challenge with it is the distortion/ overdrive. With the gain pegged, I don't get that level of drive you seem to get (around 6:15). It's still pretty clean. I guess it's not really a problem as I will likely run pedals in front of it as you do. I can confirm, this thing is loud. Even on the low setting.

Wish you could control Tilt with an expression pedal. Other than that great amp, got the 5 watt combo (hated by many for the wrong reasons 😅). Origin is maybe my fav Marshall amp.

They do work for metal, but you need a distortion pedal used as a boost. If you dial in the gain a little bit lower than AC/DC, then use a distortion pedal with the gain all the way or almost all the way down and volume dimed, and use the EQ on the amp as your primary tone sculpting tool, you can absolutely get hard rock and metal tones. I've also heard of people diming the gain sans gain boost and then using what's referred to as a "chainsaw" distortion with it to great effect.

Great video, i do wonder tho i've had this for a year and didnt know about the pulling out the gain button! But when i do it, the sound does not change at all🤔 i live in an apartment so i only have the volume at 1, and i get a bit of crunxhy sound, so i hoped pulling it out would give me more distortion at low volumes, but didn't notice anything :/ is something wrong or is it simply because i am not using real volume? I have the 50 version btw. Edit- i had the foot controller plugged in and it has its own boost button. To use the pull out gain button the foot controller needs to be disconnected

I bought a dsl40c before the origin came out. The high gain channels are useless for me. I think the origin and a pedal would have been perfect for me.

I don't know why they look so small in videos? I have the 20 watt head (albeit in cream) and it is bigger than it looks here. Edit: It's also a great amp too. It sounds better the louder it gets (like all tube amps) so using an attenuator will get you a better tone. I'm using a cheapie bugera ps1, and cranking, it really comes alive.

The last band I was in Marty the other guitar player had one and ran a boss distortion pedal through it and it sounded awesome it sounded like a plexi

Just needs an attenuator so you can crank the volume/gain all the way up and you can get that classic marshall crunch

I have an orgin thought about selling. So I wanted to watch. I have a metal zone in the loop right now. I’m not big on stacking pedals I have a jsx and believe it or not I play on the MG most. And people seem to hate that amp. Lol.

I'd like to hear it 'slightly' or a bit cleaner before pedals and then hit it with a Friedman Smallbox Pedal ( Plexi Pedal) Would make for killer Early EVH sound id think.

For some reason I can't get that much drive from mine using it at the same volume. Are your humbuckers hot? Or did you change the tubes?

The OCD kills those other pedals. No noise when you engaged it and it was the fattest sounding pedal. The Tumnus gave me a tummy ache. The P-Melter would be my second choice, but it's not the OCD. This is my opinion as a blues rock guitar player influenced by Hendrix, Beck, and Gary Moore. I use an original OCD, so I'm know what it can do.

quite interesting video. Thinking about getting one to play with the band. I just saw a video regarding the distortion of the effects in the FXloop when you crank the volume up and are using an effects processor with the 4 CM. Does anyone have experience with Delay and Reverb in the FXloop of this amp? Analog or digital? Thanks

What I luv about the Origin is not only does it sound amazing, but it has the same tube compliment as the 50w Origin but these tubes run lower voltage to bring the wattage down! Meaning the tubes will LAST A VERY LONG TIME! And with the price of good tubes now-a-dayz that is great news!

Mine had no gain total clean when dimed, sterile sounding, maybe it was faulty. Sold it and got the DSL20H .

Still on the hunt for my first Marshall. Finding a decent cab that somebody will ship to Nowhere, WV has been my most difficult task.

That top marshall can looks very familiar. Same damage scuffs I had. 70's 25's green backs. Sold mine in mid to late nineties. If it was you can I buy it back ? Lol!
