Sweden has an amazing retro rock scene going on right now, though Graveyard just called it quits after their fourth album(I was disappointed with it to be honest) Due to creative differences. Look it up, lots of great bands. I think Graveyard used a low gain Hiwatt for some nice rumble and a little crunch.
I already asked him about his signal chain...with all the pro guys making videos, and the money they have, this guy is KILLING IT when it comes to creating videos with amazing audio quality & feel. Really, he is the new Pete Thorn in my opinion lol. Go Sweden !!!! Go Johan, a huge fan from Canada salutes you !!!!!
@@cteshaunc625 I would run a marshall head with its own 212 cabinet into a orange head that's powering it's on 212 cabinet or maybe a 412 cabinet for the orange but yeah I would run the preamp out from the Marshall into the orange and get the best of both worlds.
I'm going to say both sound absolutely fantastic, I don't think I can pick a winner between them. Also, it's always great to see videos about audio equipment where the sound is as high quality as that. Far too many youtube videos can't deliver on equipment shootouts as the sound is captured by the mic on the camera and sadly that will never be good enough. Kudos sir!
I agree with (Big Question), that I liked both about equal. That's the problem with GAS, you need to have ALL the amps ;-) Great sound quality on your videos Johan. I'm dying for tone like that!!!
I too have been chasing "that sound in my head" and there it is = I hate to ask the "can I have my cake and eat it too question" but does orange get cost to that sound in one of their modern master volume more versatile amps?
@@donovanweber6059 you should give an OR15 a go if you're cool with a single channel (although I wish it had two, it's a surprising amp that stands on its own.
We had a rehearsal lately in the room of a friendly band. There was an Ampeg SVT for bass and an Orange and a Marshall half stack for the guitars. I came a little late to the party and the other guitar player had already plugged into the Orange. So I had to take the Marshall. We had a great night but every now and then I looked jealously at that Orange amp. It was the meanest fattest guitar sound I've ever listened to. And I've listened to a lot...
+frankie28web Yeah both Marshall and Orange have their distinct personalities. Marshall is a bit more nasal in tone to me and Orange has such a thick great tone.
Holy hell...they both sound amazing....and were mfg'd the year I graduated from high-school. They're both holding up better than me! haha. Thanks for the demo!
I really like your fast and uneven style of vibrato, it creates a really on-edge sound which I find to be extremely complimentary to your playing! Nice videos man.
UK made tube amps and celestion speakers are so beautiful sounding together! Both amps sound great in different ways as the SL sounds scooped and the OR sounds bumped in the mids, but his recording is truly excellent, some of the best on the Tube!
Man... really enjoy your videos! Grateful for the great technical issues you show and explain and love your music! It's so cool that you take time to share your talents, gifts and blessings with the wold. So awesome!!!!
For me the beauty of the Orange is the tone stack. It's super versatile and shining when you dial the FAC, HF Drive and Bass, Treble knobs interactively. They are working together perfectly in every FAC position but in a different range. I can't get enough of my '74 OR120. Thanks for this demonstration, Johan!
Even though my ear for tone has been shaped mostly by the old JTM and JMP Marshall amp tones, i am recently becoming a vintage Orange convert - an OR120 has become my go-to amp over a JTM 45/100. Thanks for the demo, Johan! It just confirms what i have recently found out in my own comparisons between the JTM and OR120. It also confirms that i will not do a comparison of these monsters without hearing protection, which you are clever enough to wear :)
+VintageCharlie Thanks! Yeah having these amps cranked in a small room is like operating some heavy industrial machinery ;-) We're gonna play a couple of 45/100 here on the channel soon when we go through the evolution of the 100 Watters 65 to 71. Cheers Johan
I discovered Orange amps through a Oxford, England band called Swervedriver. I saw them live 27 years ago. My brothers, and I were deaf for three days. Marshall's are amazing, too.
Yoshiaki Minabe from The Pillows uses, or used to use, an OR80 if I recall correctly, and I've always loved his work. This video makes me see why he'd like it! Sounds awesome! Great video as always :-)
+thorinbane Yeah it's a great amp, but to many people Marshall feels like a 'safe bet' since it has featured on so many famous records and rigs over the years. I think they are equally great sounding and probably hard to tell apart if not put back to back like this. Cheers Johan
I'm normally a Marshall kind of guy, but that orange sounds great. I wonder how much of that is down to the cabinet? Would be good to hear the Marshall through the orange cab and vice versa to see if they sound similar with the cabs swapped
+Jon Gill Yeah the speakers and can is a big part of it, I compare an orange cab to a Marshall cab using the exact same speakers here. Even just the box has a significant influence. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-iIgRGI4aRxw.html Cheers
The Orange looks to have a MV mod..turn that off, and turn both amps to 5 and see what we get..the Orange will sound like a big warm fart..and clean...the Super Lead will still rock.
Love this guys posts. Always informative, objective and entertaining. Nice one dude. Regarding the post, I've always wanted to have a Marshall, but I am not prepared to pay the obscene price for one, but am totally amazed to be preferring the sound of the Orange here.
This is my favorite YT channel. Johan could probably get heavenly tones out of a Marshall MS-2 and old Sears Silvertone guitar. This has me giving Orange a 2nd look. Both amps sounded great but I kind of liked that mid range vowel type sqwak that the Orange was producing with the LP. One could cover a lot of ground with just these two amps.
im really dign the tone you are getting with the orange. ive been contemplating a two el84 orange build, and after hearing your clip its time to get the soldering iron heated up. i like the flag of sweden you have up too. nice video, as always. 😊
Have an OR80. Bought new in 1977. Sounds great. I kept the UK tubes out of it for awhile. Got them back in and sounds like the day I bought it! Had a master put on it. Might sell for the right offer.
Nice comparison. I have an OR120 head, and I love it! I have to try a superlead next to my OR. But I think I prefer old school Orange over Marshall anyway.
Love both. I really have not had much to do with Orange Amps. After hearing this, I think I must (one day-when the bank account looks a bit more positive) test a few out. Great comparison. I think the Orange sounded smoother and rounder. The Marshall sounded a little more growly in the mids. Both sound fantastic. I would love to hear these running in stereo with a little lead boost pedal or pre-amp. Would be amazing. I will keep dreaming. Thanks for the excellent video.
Very nice and informative as always Johan. Thank you very much for your efforts. Sounds like that Orange is a little darker, warmer and probably has a bit more gain. Marshall is fantastic at the top and I wish Marshall has a bit more of gain or distortion in the pre amplifier.
Man, I LOVE these comparison videos! I was pleasantly surprised by the Orange amp...although I suspect that had as much to do with your playing, Johan, as it does the amp. Lifelong Marshall devotee, though... had Plexis, Bluesbreaker, AVT stack and combo etc...so the Marshall won out, for me. Both sounded great, though.
very badass playing dude. it was fun telling them apart. i got a les paul studio but i also love my strat i wonder how they sound on them. anyway thanks. great choices but ill go with orange though. just my tone preference.
Thanks Johan - great demos. We all now know how great the amps sound, but a big part of the magic is the old speaker cabinets and speakers. Can you make the amps sound as good through a typical G12t-75 cabinet, like the ones most of us are stuck with? Or one loaded with other "typical" speakers? That would be interesting!
As usual, a sonic feast for the ears. Both amps sound just amazing. The Marshall seems to have a little more gain, but the Orange has a sweetness to it that the the Marshall doesn't. I cant decide.
One can't choose both sounds absolutely killer 🤘🏼 My Slp is a 76' and I run it through a 4x12 with g12h30 cream backs and I play les paul. You pretty much hit my sound with it 💪🏻 Playing these old beasts is more than an aural experience, it's tactile and guttural at the same time. You have to fight it and at the same time wonder "is it going to blow up now?" Dirt bra Johan 👍🏼
Love your videos! I've watched this particular one so many times. I own a '75 OR80 that I love, but I'm debating trading it for a 1987x or JMP 2204. Just wondering your thoughts on this. I'm going for that AC/DC/Cheap Trick/early Kiss kind of guitar sound. Thanks!
Also...any chance of getting a comparison video of the OR80 and either of the aforementioned Marshalls both being played through the G12H30 75hz loaded Orange cab? That's the cab I own and it would be a huge help, as there aren't any old Marshalls around here to try out. Thanks!
+Anthony Ash Glad to hear that! The 2204 is very similar to this Marshall, I compare them here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-J2DYyFAONG4.html I'm actually gonna do a video where I switch cabs between the Orange and the Marshall. My personal go-to marshall is a 1977 JMP2204. Very Kiss sounding :-) Cheers Johan
Wow. Nicely done. Johan, can you put the two in the context of a song panned hard left/hard right. Maybe something we can identify with. A late 60's or early 70's type song. This may help aspiring gear heads with their placement in music. I know Kossoff, Page, Green among others used Orange and there are times when we thought Marshall and visa versa. Thanks!
Excellent. Best demo of a post matamp vintage Orange I've seen. Does anyone know of some period recorded use of these generation amps? I've seen the Rollin' Bolan AC/DC and Marc Bolan footage, but neither were regular users of them. Looking for an artist that used them in anger / regularly.
I think the Marshall was presented better and longer. I have an Orange 80 and I can get even better sounds. Also the 80 can have two more power tubes added and it would be a closer match power wise.
Two great amps. No bad choice. I'd probably choose Marshall plexi rig if I couldn't have both. Sounds like it has a touch more headroom. Could be hearing speaker differences in this vid. Would be better to play them both through the same cab, I think. Another great video Johan!
The Orange top looks like it was converted from a combo, right? Very cool to hear these two side by side as I currently don't have a vintage Marshall but I do have a 70's OR120.
They both sound awesome and your playing is so very fitting to these amps. Great videos you are putting out. Thanks for taking the time (I'm sure you are enjoying every minute of it) to make these videos for us!
Two fantastic amps, and such a treat to hear them together! I want to be your neighbor... When you say the high pass is at 2 or 3, are you talking about the FAC control? And, what's the extra, non-stock knob on the OR? I've always loved vintage Orange amps, but, yeah, so much headroom. They'll peel the paint off the walls before the power amps start getting crunchy, and the OR120s are even more punishing. Great exploration of two wonderful classics. Thanks again for another great video.
Got it. Just listened again. That Orange is SO dynamic. It seems to have greater touch sensitivity and more harmonic richness and sustain, though not as much gain/drive. Both sound fantastic. The Marshall has that thump and crunch that's so wonderfully Marshall, and the compression that makes them what they are, but the Orange, to my ears, has something special going for it. I wish they'd bring this classic design back. The new ones are nice, but they're lacking the distinctive character that made these vintage ORs what they were. This is the best demo of what those amps do I've seen on YT. Yours has become my favourite channel. (And the most dangerous one. Every time I watch one, I start thinking about selling everything I own to finance vintage amps...)
Hi Johan! Great video and great amps! For me the best is the Orange. I've a question: would you do another series of video in which you mix different type of amps (like riff for the 1st amp/ riff for the 2nd amp/ both together)? so we can listen to the infinite combination of running two amps in stereo like marshall+vox ac30 or orange+marshall / hiwatt+orange/ fender+marshall/ ecc. ecc....... Cheers from Italy!
Very nice tone. I have a question though. You said you maxed out all the settings except the bass, is that normal for these amps or why was this done, to drive them harder?
I had this Marshall when I was 18 with a generic 4 x 12 cab. I’ve never had an amp like it ever again. Sold it for £250 in 1995. Worth soooo much more now 😭
hi john what speakers in the orange.and whats in the jmp.both sound beautiful.the orange seemed to have a wide low end with less mids.the marshall seene to be tight on the bottom.huge.low mids
I'm a Marshall kinda guy, but that Orange sounds awesome!!! It would be nice to hear both amps through the same cab to hear the difference of the amps alone. Cheers!!
Great comparison vid! I love vintage Marshalls as much (actually, probably more) than the next guy, but that Orange really rocks! Marshall was a bit more crisp, but the Orange seemed to have a bit more body and warmth. Great playing as always made it a pleasure to hear both amps.
Jeez why did Orange stop putting G12H in their cabs? I have the orange OR50 and was thinking of swapping 2 of the V30's out for for these speakers. Could you do a comparison of v30s and g12 speakers with an orange amp!!?
Damn. I'm coming to this late, but WOWWWW. I have no idea what you're playing-songs, or just noodling, but there are some magnificent riffs in there. Wicked stuff. re: the amps- i think i prefer the Orange.
You should take a couple of those 'noodles' and write songs around them. They're really that good. I'm saving this video so i can learn a few of those riffs.
they both sound great johan! for different gigs, different songs and riffs, but that orange 80 is overall win win for me, if i could ever afford it, lol. great job sir!
The Marshall still speaks to me like "don't worry buddy, you will be heard. Cause we gonna cut through everything" 😄 I like how the notes fade in the orange btw
+Lee Morrison That's actually me improvising around the end riff of the live version of the Song 'She' on Kiss Alive! Check it out here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-PT_FtfuAL1c.htmlm47s Cheers :-)
Man.. I've forgotten about Ace and his badass licks! Takes me back to being a 10 year old kid and losing my shit after being exposed to KISS and Van Halen in 1978!
