In case anyone's interested in some Marsupilami lore. The three playable Marsupilamis are named "Bibu" (the yellow boy), "Bibi" (the girl) and "Bobo" (the black one). They're siblings and their the children of the original Marsupilami (or "Marsu" as he's called) from the shows. Yes shows, the Disney one wasn't the only version and it actually deviated a lot from the original Spirou comics version. He didn't talk for one (well sort of, he only says "Houba") and he wasn't friends with a gorilla named Maurice. Bibu, Bibi and Bobo are from those original comics, albeit they were babies. Their mother, and Marsu's mate, is a female Marsupilami called "Marsupilamie" (or "La Marsu" for short). Another difference is that Norman wasn't in it, although their was a hunter, but his name is, and I'm not making this up... "Bring M. Backalive". Also in case anyone's wondering, "Marsupilami" is a portmanteau of "Marsupial" and "Ami" (French for "Friend", "Amie" is the feminine version of the word). Marsupilamis are also oviparous mammals (they lay eggs), like platypuses or echidnas, and their diet in the wild consists of fruit and piranhas (hence why they're collectibles in this game). As well as their long prehensile tails, they're also extremely physically strong and highly intelligent. Also, while the males say "Houba", the females say "Houbi" and the babies just say "Bi". They come in yellow with black spots or completely black, the latter seems to be quite rare. They live in the jungles of Palombia which (I think) is in South America. The other shows, which were produced by Marathon, the people behind Totally Spies and Martin Mystery, were "Marsupilami", "Mon Ami Marsupilami" ("My Friend Marsupilami"), "Marsupilami Houba Houba Hop!" and "Nos Voisons Les Marsupilamis" ("Our Neighbors The Marsupilamis"). These shows are more in line with the Spirou comics' version, although one thing they have in common (baring the first one) is that they each feature a cast of human characters who befriend the Marsupilamis. They've usually got an overarching environmental/animal welfare message to them as well with the heroic human characters usually being scientists that are researching Marsupilamis to help preserve them (since they're a rare species) and the villains being poachers who want to capture and sell off the Marsupilamis or greedy industrialists who want to deforest Polumbia. There was also a film released called "Sur la Piste du Marsupilami" ("On the Trail of Marsupilami", it was renamed "Houba! On the Trail of the Marsupilami" in the English dub) which was one of those live action affairs where Marsu was rendered in CGI. The Marsupilami franchise is actually a spin-off of the Spirou comic "Spirou & Fantastico" where the titular creature first appeared in the twelve volume of the comic called "Le Nid des Marsupilamis" ("The Nest of the Marsupilamis") and they quickly became so popular that they got their own shows and lines of merchandise, including this game. Right, now that I've dumped that on you, I'll bid you and your comment section farewell. Houba!
The ‘Houba Houba Hop’ part sparked a memory in me and I thought I’d share. There’s a song by Dennie Christian called ‘Wij Zijn Twee Vrienden’ (we are two friends). Telstar Music Weert has a lyrics version of it, but the whole song is in Dutch and sung from the perspective of ‘Guus Flater’ and the Marsupilami.
Good god. I remember the cartoon of this way back when. But for some reason my brain has suppressed it until now! I like games like this and yooka laylee where they take an old concept (sidescroller or 3d platforming collectathon) and given it a modern twist
Really reminds me of that Yooka Laylee sequel, especially with the feathers. Add a pinch of Tropical Freeze and I think I have this game nailed down. While I'm sure some will complain about the length if the platforming is as good as you say it would probably be perfect for people who prefer shorter speedruns.
Yeah that’s kind of how I see it. I’d take maybe 7 hours here if you collect everything with solid gameplay than a drawn out game where it’s artificially extended in some ways
Heared this game is on for sale today and there was something that was there but didn't know. I did not expect this was from the Disney show nor I expected that you had reviewed this game, great.
I have always been afraid that you would end up the channel after finishing with the 64 reviews. So glad that you have expanded your content keeping that N64 approach. I will check this one out, didn't know of a game based in Colombia
It’s based in Palombia 😉 I’ve tons of n64 stuff to do and might dabble with a couple of GameCube classics I enjoyed too but mixing things up a little to keep my sanity
Marsupilami.. didn't think i'd see that name again! My father, who is from 59' already bought Marsupilami (Franquin) comics as a kid which sported these characters. I remember looking through them.. just amazing how timeless some franchises can be!
Thanks for bringing this game to my attention. I usually like to play a nice, bright platformer this time of year. It's been a good year for surprisingly good platformers. I really enjoyed Kaze and the Wild Masks which also has that DKC/Rayman vibe.
"...still waiting for Rayman to do what he does best." , in four years or less I believe, it's gonna be two decades without a proper 3D Rayman and that makes me sad. It hurts.
Neat review! I used to watch Marsupilami cartoon. Never thought we'd see Marsupilami's grown up kids in a video game. Thanks for the review, I'd love to play this game. 👍
I remember calling the Sega help hotline on the back of the cartridge for this game on the Sega Genesis. One of the hardest games for me back on the mid 90s
Marsupilami was part of Disney's Raw Toonage! By now, I have all 29 shorts. I remember enjoying the series. And yes, I had been a longtime Disney fan. I remember quite well. I did enjoy the old Disney cartoon version of him. But things had change on him. Marsupilami can actually talk. And has now have a gorilla sidekick named Maurice.
@@n64glennplant ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Vfsn-KJUBRo.html&ab_channel=BuddyBoy600alt-TheMarsupilamiMasterofRU-vid Here is one of the episodes of the Disney version of Marsupilami. Don't be alarmed that Marsupilami speaks like a human.
The character was actually created way back in the fifties by Belgian cartoonist André Franquin as part of the series “Spirou et Fantasio” (an adventure comic series kind of like Tintin but funnier) and was subsequently adapted into its own comic series and then made into a cartoon
My god. This reminded me of the SEGA Mega Drive game Marsupilami I got when I was younger. It gotta be one of the most frustrating sh*t i've ever experienced. This actually look like a game, unlike the Mega Drive version....
I had no idea I needed this! My favorite 2D platformers are Rayman Legends, Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair, Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze, and Kaze and the Wild Masks. This looks great!
I remember watching the cartoon on Saturday Disney, and it would always have unrelated Disney shorts in-between two mini episodes, mainly ones about Sebastion from The Little Mermaid. I actually wasn't aware that it was based on a book series and that the video game is based on the original adaptation and not the Disney show. So I was kind of intrigued in getting it. Just not enough to pay full price for it, given how short it is.
Which one of the 3 marsupilami or did you mean all 3? I’m not a fan but it’s more kid like, give me the Og comic book one which sometimes looked angry any day!
Quite surprised to see a Marsupilami game on Switch in 2021 lol. I'm Belgian and Marsupilami comes from a Belgian comic book series (it's a spin-off actually). I didn't know this was popular outside of our little country.
Hoping to have Pokémon as I have a copy coming on Friday (diamond) and maybe microids will send me asterix slap me all for next week because that looks amazing
Not sure why people are complaining about you reviewing newer games? I love hearing reviews and opinions on newer stuff from slightly older gamers like myself who roots are firmly with the older consoles and appreciate good gameplay and level design above all else.
Me too, It’s actually funny because this didn’t start as an n64 channel and I think rayman origins on ps3 was actually the first game I reviewed on here 😂
This game has no right to play this good, look this good or sound this good coming from a small developer with a licensed IP but there it is, looking like a DKC Returns copy-cat for the younger audience with good controls, character design, music, gameplay and graphics! I mean, can't just all games have such quality? I remember the cartoon, was fun to watch as a kid and the new design fits right into the current Zeitgeist. Amazing what they did here and I will pick this game up, such devs need support and a bigger budget!
I know right! I’m glad across the web this is getting really positive reviews too and from what I’ve watched and read others have similar takes on it to myself so seems to be a consensus forming
Definitely giving this a whirl, love Tropical Freeze and Rayman Origins. Serious vibes of both of them here. Never heard of the cartoon! And never heard of this game until just now! Nice one, will get it and go.
You’re not missing anything by the cartoon but the games very fun, albeit another half the length of the games mentioned. I played it in one sitting and didn’t get bored at any time.
Interesting that lately there's been a resurgence of European licensed platformers. Theres this but also Smurfs game that came out recently and the Asterix and Obelix games.
Glenn, as a Banjo-Kazooie fan, Im surprised that you missed to compare this game to Yoka-Laylee: Impossible Lair. If you ask me, this game definitely feels the most similar to Impossible Lair. The first green land area, the music, the UI, the 3D graphics on a side scrolling plane and even the DK shooting barrels, these were staples of Impossible Lair. If you didnt play it already, do check it out, youll see what I mean.
An unexpected surprise but a welcome one all the same. Although I prefer N64 reviews, I'm enjoying your foray into the Switch and other consoles. As always deeply appreciate the hard work you put into these reviews.
Saw the trailer for that last month or in September and thought it has a pretty decent look and reminded me of Tropical Freeze in style. Maybe I'll give it a shot.
It’s funny because the different cartoon variations of marsupilami are all different to an extent but I don’t think any actually “got” the original character that well.
It pains me people remember the character because of the cartoon. The comic is nothing like that. While current comics aren't that special the Franquin ones are legendary
while this looks alright, what amazes me is that donkey kong country still looks and sounds better, is way faster and difficult and probably also plays a lot better.
@@n64glennplant Well it sure did reach Russia. It used to be my favourite cartoon! I really thought it was forgotten as so many old cartoons throughout history, so I'm glad to see the franchise isn't dead.
Okay I'm interested, though "it's been 8 years since the last Rayman" really did hurt far more than it should have! Is it 60fps on Switch? I generally seem to find Switch is my natural physical purchase preference, so long as it is 60fps (if the other versions are) heh.
Good question but I’m not sure 💯 I’m also not sure if the series x or ps5 versions are faster etc but from what I played it ran smoothly enough and for a good few solid hours of enjoyment I can’t argue 😃
(Edited) This video seems to accurately show the performance now, as it lines up with the other ones I've seen: it looks like the game tries to do 60fps on Switch, but only hits its target in smaller areas. A lot of it is more like 35-45fps in reality.
Well D,oh i thought that the game would suck and you woulda ripped a new one he he... Also what does Marsupilami actually do in the Tv series i mean he has a long tail and? Like who are the villians? What's Marsupilami,s personality? What are common side characters ect I mean everyone has heard of Marsupilami but i don't think many can explaine what's he is about
Haha I know right it’s so weird - didn’t you ever see the cartoon? Marsupilamis are like the tail creatures and if you read the description box their names are in there. If you watch the cartoon intro on RU-vid you can pretty much sus what it’s all about
Nah not at all, provided a copy by the studio but I get literally 10+ emails a day with steam codes for indie games but never use them. I actually reached out to the studio to get an advance copy but they sent me a code today, no embargo on anything and just said remember I yes aimed at younger gamers and off you go 😄
Maybe wait and see other opinions before deciding to buy, I personally really enjoyed it start to finish but depending what price it is where you are may decide if it’s worth it for you
After Nintendo sold me a game on the Wii U without mentioning I needed a specific controller, then not accepting a refund I vowed to never buy another Nintendo Game again, screw them and their anti consumer practice.
See this is an issue with games like this ..I remember the cartoon character from the thumbnail but I have no idea what it was called in Norway back In the day so I would never look at the game cover and make the connection
I feel like the channel is losing focus lately... I know that over time creators content changes, but I'm just feeling less engaged now, more likely to scroll past the videos rather than watch them right away like I used to...
