The Ravel concerto is one of the MOST difficult pieces for keeping the orchestra and piano rhythmically in sync! The bassoonist and trumpet especially.
Fun fact: this exact piece was the one they played the first time they performed together, Argerich and Dutoit, 60 years ago... I just think it makes this video even more wholesome
Yes, there is no doubt she knows the tapestry of this work by heart, she can probably hear the cadenzas and rhythms almost in her sleep...having played it continuously for all of her professional life - and she does it with complete mastery! Still a difficult work to play, not least for the orchestra. There's a beautiful video of her playing the languid slow movement in Paris a couple of years ago, with the orchestra conducted by Emmanuel Krivine. Her playing is adorable and the music seems to be about the slow passage of time and memory, in an almost Proustian sense - it's especially easy to see it that way for all those of us who have listened to her for decades and can remember early photos and record ccovers of her with that glowing black mane of hair, now turned silvery grey... ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-jeuYd8nltBo.html
Her comments at 9:00 are so touchingly sad. It must be bittersweet, having lived as a titan of the piano and a citizen of the world, to revisit old haunts without the comfort of familiar faces and friends. My heart goes out to her. It has been a privilege to have the first few decades of my life overlap with hers, and I hope she has joy and peace during these uncertain times.
I’m having trouble understanding... is she talking about musicians who died over the years in general or did something specific happen? Could you please explain🥲
@@user-xx1yl9ze1v well, they are not the youngest anymore and their friends might have been older than them. So I guess the former, but not sure of course.
This is a conductor's job. Not just to lead, but to shape and hear what the various sections can't. Also, as in the case of any concerto, to ensure a good dialogue between solo instrument and orchestra.
love how folks take a 2 second reaction and project their own sentiments onto the matter. Nobody knows what the hell she was reacting to...disappointment that he was going to be traveling out of the country? off the continent? to the USA? as far away as California? or a number of other possibilities that could easily have absolutely nothing to do with anything specific to "Los Angeles." Geez.
Martha introduced me to the Ravel in the 1960's via an LP purchase. Then l watched her later playing it again in vision ( on TV) and was mesmerised by her eloquent mastery of the keyboard and the ever so challenging score. A raven haired beauty touched a special place in my deep affection for this concerto. To this day l treasure Martha's recordings as a genuine privilege.
She is one of the best pianists out there and to have the conductor that is so in tune with the soloists and the musicians is simply amazing! Like making love!
thank you thank you thank you thank you! i have been wondering for 10 years now what they'd been saying during this rehearsal and thanks to the subtitles i'm in the know at last!!!
I love Mrs Argerich's playing. There is something so light in her playing and she is imho the best to bring the changes of emotions in the music to our ears. I cannot listen to many pianists, some make me nervous... idk why.
It’s interesting how it’s not only the music that’s taken into account but also the interpersonal relationships within the people in the orchestra. He mentioned things like their mood, the weather, their blood pressure etc. This has taught me that music interweaves the musician’s character and the technical aspects which reflects in their performance and their effect on the audience.
Im getting feeling orchestra like dutoit. He's tough but fair w good senseof humor. Fabulous back stage here. Why cant we get more like this ala all orchestras
My goodness, what have we here? A completely awe-inspiring work of genius, a faultless pianist at the summit of performance, and a conductor whose thorough knowledge of everything and all instrumental parts in the score is matched by his spell-binding interpretative vision. All videos of rehearsals are educational, but this one will take some beating. Thank you!
😮it is not rushing . Time just goes differently like some kind of time machine and and she made this possible. I feel so many people through her. Thanks.😊
Le génie de la composition et de l'orchestration de Ravel, deux immenses interprètes et un excellent orchestre (qui semble composé de beaucoup de jeunes musiciens), que du bonheur !
Thank you soooooo much for the subtitles! I love watching orchestral rehearsals! Evidently, Ms. Argerich also understands French in addition to being stunningly brilliant on the piano.
A polyglot, indeed! She’s Argentine, so Spanish-speaking, but brought her children up in French. She also speaks English, German, Italian and Portuguese.
Oh that slow movement! And the bit that suddenly breaks in and goes 'dadadaDA'. And everyone knows exactly the little spine-thrilling phrase I am speaking of!
I think this was recorded before 2015... I remember I used to watch this reharsal video and the performance video in 2010. I simply loved it! But then I couldn't find them anymore on RU-vid. Thanks for sharing this video again!
Ravel and Prokoviev; certainly two formative composers in Argerich's performances; or even composers influenced by her - in terms of their perception in concert life. . However, it is astonishing what a distinctive sound this woman is able to produce on the piano. Over the decades, it makes one wonder how the sound of these recordings would have come about. After a concert visit, or even such an audiovisual excerpt, it becomes clear: through Martha Argerich's performance. There are not too many pianists in history (at least those whose discography is documented) who have been able to achieve such a sound culture.
