Martha Argerich is universally acclaimed as one of the great pianists of the 20th century, and she's still active at age 80. There is a remarkable consensus about her best recordings, which is a good thing because much of her discography consists of remakes of the same repertoire, many of which are not worthy of her. Go to ClassicsToday.com to see the special Insider Subscriber video review of her 10 best recordings. What, not an Insider? Please consider signing up here: www.classicsto...

Argerich is right back at it, playing the living daylights out of the Franck with Renaud Capuçon on their new live recital album. Ohimè!

She just gave a remarkable Chopin 3rd Sonata live in Hamburg ! I disagree her legacy won't be hurt by the multiplicity of the same recorded works nor the quality. We live in a time where everything is for sale . Radio broadcasts from the 1940's,1950'sand before come to light everyday. Just found Josef Lhevinne in Tchaikovsky I wasn't even aware existed . Anyway ,the future offers new way to judge artists .

Thank you, ZJM, for mentioning the Josef Lhevinne/Tchaikovsky recording; I would have written this sooner, but was busy ordering a copy! (It's on a Marston Records 3cd set, if anyone else is interested.) It's ironic that I'd learn of a previously unknown recording by the greatJosef Lhevinne--whose collected studio recordings comprise less than one hour's playing time--in a discussion of Martha Argerich's tendency to release multiple recordings of everything in her repertoire.

I would love to hear her perform Rachmainoff's 1st Sonata, Rimsky-Korsakoff's Concerto, and Tchaikovsky's 3rd.

You're correct again, David, about the dubious adulteration of any artist's body of work by the record labels' obligation to churn out product, which we all demand. But then, whose fault is it?. Who can blame whom?

So did I miss the announcement that you're losing your toe-hold in Brooklyn and that EVERYTHING is going to Connecticut (and into what must soon be a massively overflowing Overflow Room)? Wow, that IS big news. Good luck with it all. I'll miss the occasional video of Traveling Music drawn from your former weekend commutes.

Somewhere I'm sure I have a recording of Beethoven Violin Sonatas with her playing the piano accompaniment and that's a nice recording.

Nice to see the gong. Have you tested the acoustics yet? Go on ... we'll enjoy it too

6:08 there is also a 1960 recording of Mozart Piano Concerto no. 21 with Peter Maag (also at Cologne, I think). It's a shame it wasn't included as the performance is splendid.

She's recorded very few Mozart concerti.

@@MrInterestingthings Yes, sadly, although we're very lucky to have those she did record. No. 25 on EMI (live) is probably my favourite.

Why did Argerich avoid the Emperor Concerto (and I think also the 4th) ? Or is that not true?
@drrabner47
@drrabner47 Год назад
Argerich does not play the #4 Beethoven because when she was 6 she was at the symphony with her mother and the program piece was the #4. She was so moved by the interpretation, I believe it was Arrau, she decided she could never play it as well as he did. She has said many times to this day she has never played it, even for herself.

@@drrabner47 Well Arrau is indeed one of my favorites. I believe she was too modest tho - would love to hear her play it
@drrabner47
@drrabner47 Год назад
@@pauldrapiewski6761 Probably because she was only 6 at the time. But it had a tremendous effect on her and decided right then I will never duplicate this. I’m sure, at that age, she was not aware of what was coming for her. She has said in several interviews I have seen she wanted to be a doctor. What a loss that would have been to the world of music. Glad she changed her mind!
