Martha Mödl sings "Starke Scheite schichtet mir dort" from Götterdämmerung by Richard Wagner (1813-1883) Orchestra Sinfonica di Roma della RAI Wilhelm Furtwängler, conductor Roma , XI. 1953
Mödl was SO good in the early 1950s. Even the high notes, with which she struggled later, came out with ease. While Flagstad sails through this like an ocean steamer, Mödl has such a personal, direct and emotional approach.
Unglaublich authentisch, emotional, echt! Ich liebe sie!
There are more ideal singers perhaps, but no more ideal artists in this repertoire. She embodies the character in every phrase - such a way with the words, and that feminine legato allied to that copious, radiant sound in every register.
The only great Wagnerian whose native language was German!! Here I can understand every word!! This is fabulous, I adore the vibrato too, she has good high notes and good low notes, simply excellent!!! This is perfection, though a bit off pitch sometimes. She is so natural and so dignified, I wonder how come it's the first time I hear her............... THANKS!!!
holy of holies, my grandmother a juliard trained contra alto, new york, gave me shivvers of divine ecstacy, wagner became a god to me thru her i so love you clara alice wilky, so fortunate to have lived a large part of my life with you. funny, alone with her i played other classical, rock, loud, and sometimes she'd bang on the door '''turn it down'', BUT WAGNER WHO I BLASTED, NEVER,NEVER !!!!!!e
She was most emphatically NOT second rate. While I acknowledge the supremacy of Flagstad and Nilsson, I cannot relegate Martha Modl to the "second rate" category. Any soprano who establishes an international reputation on this repertoire is not "second rate" ---------not by a long shot!
Then it's odd that Furtwangler recorded his RAI Ring with her as Brunnhilde. And that she was a star at Bayreuth for many years. She wasn't second rate. She was in the same class as Nilsson, Traubel, Flagstad, and Varnay. And you are no expert on greatness.
You can be proud of your liebe Martha, there are many spots here where she surpasses Birgit and Kirsten, her diction is better, her emotions more versatile, her high notes better than Flagstad's. I love them all, but this is the truth, she is superb, better than first class!!!!!
