The entrepreneur talks with TODAY's Matt Lauer about what she learned from the time she spent in prison in 2004, dealing with the criticism and negativity that comes with being in the public eye, and her two beloved grandchildren.
Since her debacle I've gained a lot of respect for her.She got crucified while Wall Street sleazoid men were coddled. She emerged unscathed, dignity intact. That, and she's very good at what she does (and likes cats).
you bring up a great point. seriously some rich bastards get away with some of the worst crimes but Martha Stewart goes to jail lol what a bunch of b.s.
I always liked Martha, she can be overbearing at times but at the end of the day she is the best at what she does and she doesn't give a damn what the haters say. She's a bad bitch in the classiest way :)
She has worked so hard for her place in the world and I think many are just jealous. I believe there are some who tried to take her down and it didn't work! Good for her!
So true. Feel the same about that dweeb selling books out of his garage that was mocked and ridiculed. Today we call him by his name: Jeff Bezos. *props*
I would have said, "I have learned that jealousy knows no bounds and can even lead to murder or assassination of character, which is the same thing." It would be nice to see Martha ask Matt what he has learned from his "tough time".
I would love for Martha to interview Matt Lauer with very similar questions... I personally enjoyed watching this in 2020 knowing Matt is out, funny how it comes full circle... Thanks for laughs, Matt!
There is a saying. People want you to do well, but not better than they are doing. If someone perceives someone as having something they don't, they will criticize them to feel better about themselves. Successful people, instead of criticizing people they are jealous of, actually watch and learn what the person who has what they want has.
You never know what will happen overtime in 2004 and 2005 Martha was in crisis and Matt was his most pompous in 2017 and 2018 Martha is thriving and Matt is no where to be found
She must be the strongest person I have ever seen. My dad said those exact words to me. I achieved my goals. Certainly not Martha’s ones but ones that satisfied me. It really helps to have someone who believes in you.
Key takeaway….”You can anything because you’re a hard worker” said by her father. BIG HUGE impact since they spent a LOT of time together growing up working on projects.
I know someone who has, and she is a classic narcissist. While this person I know guest starred on her show, she treated him with great respect and deference, because he is a world renowned chef. But he was sickened and shocked by her behavior. And that's saying something coming from a chef (as chefs tend to be critical and difficult in their kitchens). She screamed, sniped, demeaned and berated her staff during the entire weekend he stayed with her. And that was he staff at the studio, and at her home. And here she is making statements that are totally in live with a narcissist. She cannot accept any criticism. She imagines that it's jealousy, because she can't bear to have any crack appear in the façade she's created for herself, about herself. And whilst she does have many positive attributes, she certainly has some important negative traits as well, that it would behoove her to address.
I always liked Martha Stewart. Her ability to live through this experience with grace and dignity is perhaps the best teaching lesson. Sooner or later we all stumble. One needs to stand back up, brush it off and move on. Thank you Martha.
If you want to know anything about a true survivor, then there are literally millions of people who have done it better than Martha Stewart. She lost people money, lied about her stocks, went to jail for six months - knowing full well that when she got out , she was going to return to her posh lifestyle. Boo hoo. She just had it so terrible.People need to stop putting these celebrities on a fucking pedestal all the time and get a grip on reality.
pwoods100 Yeah you're right what the hell was I thinking, there are many that have been through absolute hell, mothers who never got to say goodbye to their babies, women who were raped, beaten, abused etc. I was in a different realm of thought back then when I originally watched this.
Martha Stewart's positive impact on American society will be felt for generations to come. Not merely years...but GENERATIONS. This is a woman who almost single-handedly made it OK for American women to love and take care of their homes, to entertain beautifully, to cook delicious meals for family and friends, to tend gardens to perfection, to keep a home clean and presentable, to create neat and fun crafting projects, and to be curious and learn about the world around us. Before Martha, the art of homekeeping was frowned upon; something only little old ladies did in a past life. She's a good, tough businesswoman who has inspired millions of women. The three top women figures in my life are my mother, Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis and Martha Stewart. And, let's get real, people...many MEN got away with the same exact thing, but they're hailed as "good businessmen". Stop the sexist crap with Martha. Furthermore, she's paid her debt to society, so those that still snark about her conviction need to grow up and get over it. She has, you should, too. She doesn't care what they naysayers think of her, and she doesn't think of them at all.
A crook is a crook but I’m sure Martha couldn’t care less who doesn’t like her nor does she give a damn that you have taken time to write a long winded defense for her.😂
@@Gemmarose9012 gosh. You put a lot of effort into that comment as well. You seem like you care which is really sweet but you don’t have to be ashamed of that. 😃
When has home-keeping ever been frowned upon for women? I agree with some of your sentiments but Martha didn’t invent home-keeping, entertaining and cooking. She made it her art form yes but generations of women and men came before her who also learned past down skills.
I've always admired you Martha, I can't wait until you new book comes out. I was in a Hanna Home in 1985 in Jackson, Mississippi. I't DID make me stronger!!!
Trauma recovery therapists are selling the last stage of recovery is you become a better person and use your horrible experience to the betterment of society. About that I have said “bull” and more. Nothing good comes out of having your life destroyed. Good for Martha. She has risen to the occasion, and said the truth. No, nothing good comes out of it. We lose productive years of our lives, and during that time we lose people we love too. I wish I could rise to the occasion too. But starting over at 68 with no more assets and clinging to my health continues being a huge deterrent. I’m glad Martha was honest about nothing good having come out of that experience. What a woman does through it and after it is to make the most of it so we can to stay sane in order to endure. Much respect for Martha Stewart.
knowing how matt is now . i just get annoyed with his journalism style. i hate it now. he was annoying. he asked questions like "there gotta be times about self reflection" he seemed to dig on the bigger issues with many people , nobody wants a interviewer who was doing the worst of the worst of all .............
I like Martha Stewart. I hate crafts, but I like this woman. They say women are weaker, men are mentally stronger. But compare her to Bud Dwyer who (innocent of charges) blew his brains out on live TV because he faced the same sort of prison time.
+VideoMenu Yeah, uh, facing prison time is a lot different for a man. Calling Dwyer a pussy in comparison to Martha just shows that you are absolutely clueless.
The Federal Prosecutors NEVER accused her of insider trading. They basically said she was guilty of obstruction of justice for going on TV and saying she wasn't guilty of insider trading. Apparently they felt she tainted the jury pool..
A lady who lied about her stocks just to put other people in jeopardy, is not a decent lady. And if you would do what she did if you had the knowledge, then you aren't a decent person either.
I love 💕 Martha since! That’s was infer to submit a person like Martha to such pain she’s a good human and good example of how to survive atrocities. Dobre bardzo pani Martha 💕👍💐
Good interview on both sides. Stewart's def a straight talker (nothing good about prison, gotta love it!) and Lauer was up for it, not intimidated. She'd be tough to work with but you'd learn a lot very quickly -or else. Lauer would have done well married to a woman like this, she's tough and wouldn't have let him get away with anything and he'd have respected her for that.
i respect my mom and she told me with the me too movement that all the women were weak coming out decades later. she would have left my dad in a second if he mistreated her, or told anyone who crossed the line to cut the shit
This predatory animal would NEVER be with a smart, successful woman like M.S. He wants a doormat he can lie, cheat and steal from. His ex-wife appeared to have a serious eating disorder, which is indicative of lots of emotional turmoil. He does not want a confident woman who will call him out on his chit.
And what did you "learn" about your own self-reflections, Matt Lauer? I just love Martha Stewart! And she's absolutely right, I think she's been the victim of a lot of society's sexism.
Looking back, Matt Lauer was a terrible interviewer, not letting Martha speak and round out her answers. And it's weird to see him questioning her when he had his own secrets: On November 29, 2017, NBC News announced that Lauer's employment had been terminated after an unidentified female NBC employee reported that Lauer had sexually harassed her during the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia, and that the harassment continued after they returned to New York.
She had stock in Imclone, about $48,000 worth. Imclone is a pharmaceutical company that had, at the time, a new cancer treatment drug that was supposed to be a hit and earn it's investors a lot of money. Unfortunately, the drug was a flop and was not approved by the American FDA, thus this would have (and eventually did) cause the Imclone stock shares to tumble.... Why did Martha go to jail? Well, not only she did, but an entire group of people did around her as well because they cheated in the stock market through what is called as "insider trading" which is highly illegal. She received inside information that the shares would fall the next day and sold them all saving her a loss of nearly $50,000 dollars. Her stock broker and many people from her financial team went to prison as well or were heavily fined. Insider trading may not seem like a big deal but it is. Imagine buying a home from someone who knew that it was going to fall through a sinkhole the day after you moved in. She sold shares to people in the stock exchange that she new would crash and burn the next day, saving her self 50k, and causing someone else and a whole bunch of other law abiding imclone investors to lose money on her behalf.
+Trevor C She's a millionaire, and she went to prison over 50 grand. That's like a average joe going to prison over 50 cents. How cheap and pathetic can she be?
EnigmaHood she was worth a billion dollars, and it was over $200,000. As far as I'm concerned she didn't do anything wrong ! She overheard someone at a cocktail party say a certain stock was going to go down so she just sold it.
Martha Stewart walked my brown and white pitbull out on The Today Show, unbeknownst to me, before I adopted her via a caring foster mama on Craigslist. I am trying to find this. Any ideas?! We were called back at the end of 2008, myself and Millie, and maybe four or five other dog owners... on a platform... and Matt Lauer addressed a question to me about what its like to be a pitbull owner. *The "From Bow To Wow" segment from The Today Show.
Martha was in CLUB FED...they have tennis...rather like a very low end, economy, middle class cruise ship YOU CAN'T LEAVE. HORRORS. Surely, beneath her standards...must have been CRUSHING.
All bullshitting aside i know a employee who works at the prison while Martha was there. And strait from the horses mouth she had it made there it wasn't as bad as she makes it out to be plus she had a lot of benifits while she had her stay at club fed FACT!
Did something good came out of it? Matt Lauer asked Martha. Matt Lauer later on left his job after being accused of sexual harassment. Maybe he can answer his own question to Martha.
I knew Martha Stewart was going to be fine. 😂 And so was Lori Loughlin and so is the Chrisley's...maybe. The only thing against the Chrisley's is the amount of time they're facing. Most celebrities though, they might lose out on some advertising and specific show opportunities but I knew Martha Stewart was going to be just fine. If anything it made it better for her.
