Ozil is Ozil, no one is like him, he can see 4 passes ahead, and his only weakness is he doesn't like tracking back and helping the defence, Odegaard is a workhorse and can pass and score, he is not yet at Ozil level but he's definitely going to get there.

As an ozil fan i'll say that ozil focused more on assists than at scoring, which held him back a lot and made arsenal lose matches due to his decisions. Edit: not saying his passes are bad, no far from it. His passing, crossing etc. All of them are extremely high level. Think of it like this. Peak KDB still needs a decent forward otherwise his passes become fruitless, and on the otherhand Prime Ozil somehow manages to find a way to assist a badly performing player in the match. There is a reason why Alexis, Giroud and Ozil combo was so frightening. Ozil had great forwards to pass the ball to and they dominated in offense a lot.

@@dartng5029 Özil was in the end a passenger wherever he was and wherever he succeeded. He never had the leadership qualities needed to be a great. He maybe had the best abilities in many ways. But in Madrid, in the German national team, in Arsenal... he was never a real leader and never able to bring a positive spirit to a team. And you can see in what happened the last few years what type of person he is.

Only speaking of one aspect of the game. Martin is a more fluid fit with everything he does around just goal contributions, whenever the team requires it of him can drop deeper playing as a box to box. Goal contributions is good and all but it's not as valuable if you concede more and it's clear Ozil defensive work was his biggest weakness.

yall are really forgetting about the young mesut ozil and the type of player he was. he was in his mid-20s going up against a prime barcelona consisting of Messi, Xavi, Iniesta, Busquets and many more and he was dominating la Liga. during his 2010-2013 season with only 159 appearances, he had 27 goals and 81 assists and won la liga twice in just 3 years and also won the 2014 World cup in which especially Mesut özil played a significant role in the german national and helped win the World Cup. put some respect on Mesut Özil.

exactly, once Wenger did actually focus on signings for those positions in the summer of 2016 after Leicester beat us to the title he signed Mustafi and Xhaka...when for slightly higher fees he could've gone for Kante and Bailly. This we fell off and finally dropped out the top 4 with those Europa League standard signings...

I love Ozil a lot as a player however Martin is really good. If he is to captain Arsenal to a league title at 24, that's amazing. Added advantage is that he works hard on and off the ball making him an 8 and Ozil a 10 in football positions only.

Ozil playmaking ability and vision is better. Odegaard is not far away plus he has the leadership, work rate and tactical discipline required in the modern game where a playmaker not only need to attack but also requires to defend as well. No longer the time where you can have a luxury player in the team who cannot help much in defence. Teams are much better set up to deal with top individual talents. To conclude 10 years back having Ozil is better. But in the modern era Odegaard will be a better fit. Player such as Ozil, James Rodriguez will suffer.

Just look at his stats whenever he got subbed. Always among top 3 longest distance covered in the game. People talk as If he was an old school no 10 that hardly ran but he was the exact opposite which is why he was the star of Germany 2010 world cup & got sold to Real Madrid.

How do you put club achievement into players' accounts as a whole? During the Ozil era, Arsenal has the worse defenders can be in football clubs. Arsenal today is not bc of Odegaard as a whole, but because the management team starts with coaching, recruitment, etc. This comparison needs to stop. Ozil had great vision, and made a lot of assists. However, technically he plays simple. He lobbed a lot. Simple passes. You could watch what he was doing, and see it coming. Ødegaard is on another level here, he tricks your brain into thinking you know where he is gonna go, but then the ball is suddenly somewhere else. If you aren't watching from afar you won't even notice. This is just barely after he found his own play style. The worst part is that this playstyle ain't something you can defend against or predict. I think he plays that intelligently. Then there are the assists. That are the ones we count that actually made goals, if we had statistics for potential assists, Ødegaard is in a class of his own. Compared to the time he has been playing. That is not even mentioning him being the captain. No words are needed to explain how much of an impact he is doing in that department.

Why is that a criteria? Odegaard works much harder also in defenceand and that should also count. Özil was mostly useful in attack. Besides, if Odegaard scores 12 goals (4 more goals) and has about 12-15 assists in total + Arsenal win PL or any title, thats better involvement than özil has ever had.
