@@Lowkey_AFCIt's an individual award. Not a team award. In 2001 rivaldo was clearly the best player on the planet. No one argued when he won the ballon dor. That season Barca finished 4th and won nothing. But it didn't matter because everyone could see rivaldo was the best. These days we give it to guys like modric just for reaching a world cup final when it's clear he wasn't even the best player at his club team.
@@NeilLewis77 first of all Rivaldo won the ballon dor in 99 figo won it 2000 and Owen won it 2001 and Rivaldo won Europa league that year I believe modric only won the ballon dor because he won the CL and played a World Cup final in which he won player of the tournament, Henry deserved a ballon dor for sure but he’s performances didn’t lead to anything so why should he of won if he’s performances never led us to nothing
@@Lowkey_AFC your right about the year. Rivaldo did win it in 99. But your wrong about the uefa cup. Rivaldo won nothing the year he won his ballon dor. He didn't have to. He was easily the best player on the planet. Arsenal didn't need to win trophies to prove henry was a better player than nedved. It was clear as day. It's an individual award for the world's best player. Club trophies shouldnt come into it.
Jokes around laxatives was at a recent high around this time with Rowan Atkinson's movie Mr Bean. in 1997. Remember that scene where Mr Bean spikes the coffee of the security guard (who was tasked with guarding the painting.) So it wasn't a weird reference at the time of broadcast.
Dude lost the Ballon d'Or to freaking Pavel Nedved. No dissrespect to Nedved but Henry was compared to him a level above. 32 goals and 25 assists that season, not to mention also 12 goals and 12 assists for France. Biggest robbery ever
Yeah it’s always referenced and most completely agree, I’ve got a mate who’s a united fan that gets very passionate about Henry not winning which also amuses me
Coming from a Chelsea fan since 1995, Henry deserved a minimum of 2 Ballon d'Or awards. I've seen Chelsea come up against Messi and Cristiano, I'm aware of their qualities, but I wasn't scared of them. Henry was THE ONLY player that, when I saw his name on the teamsheet, it gave me genuine fear, because he was just devastating.
@@rohithraman6488 possibly 2006 as well, it should've been either him or Ronaldinho imo. Cannavaro had a very good world cup, but he was not the best player in the world lol.
@@TH14Comps yeah fair enough. But having said that, Ronaldinho did win the UCL but at the world cup that year he was quite disappointing to say the least. So maybe 2006 as well as you said
As a United fan, the only ones that ever gave me fear were R9 and Messi. But Henry was my favourite player from the prem, even as a United fan. Until we got Rooney 😁🙌🏽
This is bringing so much nostalgia, what a time to be an Arsenal fan. School full of United fans and about 5 of us were Arsenal fans but Henry made us untouchable most weeks
People talk about Christiano Ronaldo but this here man did it all AND won: 1) a World Cup 2) euro 3) champions league 4) fa and copa del rey 5) premier and la liga trophies And did it all while being an elite goal scorer, passer, dribbler He deserves to be with the top top legends of the game like Maradona, Pele, Messi Underrated in his greatness
@@DanielWilson-bu4cq oh don’t get me wrong CR7 is a great but what I was getting at was that in those debates between who are the goats Henry’s name is never brought up and that’s not fair. That’s all I’m saying. No hate for CR7.
It's f**king criminal that Henry never won a Ballon d'Or. I grew up in this period and honestly, I can't describe how good Henry was as a kid. He was magic. Teams used to s**t themesleves when Henry ran at defenders. It's sad we didn't win the league in 2003 as we played some incredible football that season, just as good as the unbeaten league season. 2002-2006 he was the best in the world. Looking at today's Arsenal team, we need a Henry-like player. A goalscorer. Someone like him who can net 20-30 goals.
03 Nedved was obviously not as good as Henry, but u can argue his CL performances deserved it. It's just weird that Henry came 2nd in both the FIFA award and the Ballon d'or, and lost out in each to a player that wasn't even in the top 3 for the other award. Especially since the only international tournament that year, the confed cup, was dominated by Henry. I think Henry deserved it, it's not like he was bad in the CL, and he still led Arsenal to 2nd, an fa cup, and had success with France - but Nedved was an OK choice. Shevchenko in 04 made much less sense. He didn't even have the CL claim Nedved did. Henry scored more, assisted more, was a better footballer, and was huge for the invincibles. Ronaldinho or Deco winning would've been somewhat understandable, but Henry for his consistency deserved it imo. No big players had a good euros that year, as Greece spoiled it for everyone - but Henry faced huge criticism and blame after France's loss to Greece. I think that cost him. Shevchenko, while absolutely being one of the most feared strikers for a few years, was not the best player in the world at that point. He won that purely off his past reputation, and the blame Henry took for France's defeat. 06 should've been either Ronaldinho or Henry. Everyone knew they were the 2 best players. Ronnie won La Liga and led Barca to the CL, but was poor in the world cup. Henry had a good world cup, and carried a young Arsenal team to the CL final - if Nedved deserved 03 for his performance in the champions league, then Henry surely deserved this. But he came 3rd behind Cannavaro and Buffon - who only had a good world cup. They were both knocked out the CL by Henry's Arsenal, and were stripped of the serie a title and relegated. Somehow Ronaldinho only came 4th. Overall, 03 was his clear peak imo, but lack of team success and Nedved's heroics in the CL makes it OK I guess (tho for me it's still silly). 04 was a travesty. 06 was also insane. You can make an argument he didn't deserve any of them - but it's kinda like arguing Messi didn't deserve it in 2012 just coz he didn't win the league and champions league. You'd basically have to ignore that this was obviously the best player in the world. The ballon d'or has always been a bit of a joke, but in the 2000s it was a complete shambles.
That’s always my most unpopular opinion and I’m a Manchester United fan but to me Henry has an argument to be the greatest striker ever and in the same category as R9 for sure
R9 peak was too much for probably everyone. Closed to him only Messi and Dinho in the recent years. Henry was and incredible legend, but R9 before the injury was something else..
We used to turn up early at Highbury just to watch him warm up. We knew he was amazing back then, but for us to be still talking about how amazing he was 20+ years later tells you just how good he was.
2003-2006 was outright the best striker in the world bar none was nobody like him, unbelievable years the defenders those days were more physical aswell, goal scorer and playmaker in one they’ll never be another like him
Hats off to the creator of this video. In a sport where fans have the memory capacity of goldfish, this is a fantastic piece of History made up purely of primary source materials that captures wonderfully the GREATNESS of Thierry Henry, and why TH is one of the greatest of all-time. Well done.
Peak Henry was pretty much a basic fusing of R9 and Neymar...! The crime of not being given a Ballon D'Or is the thing that has him underrated by casuals... until you watch how he played the damn game! #encroyable!!
They always have the debate of Henry or mbappe…. Henry all day long, he has everything mbappe has and more, has a ego which you can be annoyed about cause he backs it where mbappe ego makes him a spoilt brat, Henry is a team player and makes the players around him better , if henry was playing in this new generation of football he’d flourish
I think of Mbappe as more of a moments player whereas Henry is more likely to dominate a game. Tbh I think it is close, we can't deny what Mbappe is doing/has done. I agree Henry was more complete. Stronger, better ball carrier, better back to goal, free-kicks, playmaking etc. He'd be unreal in this generation with more structured build up and high lines being so common. But Mbappe is a killer, and will end up with a huge legacy given what he's done for France, and the fact he's going to Real Madrid in his prime.
@@TH14Comps I agree mbappe is an extrodinary player , his numbers when his career finishes is gonna be incredible, but I don’t think mbappe could do it as good back in the Henry error where there was so many world class players, I don’t think there’s many “world class” players atm, but I feel Henry’s numbers would be much more higher if he was in this era
Henry would have buried that chance Mbappe had 1 on 1 against the Austria keeper. Henry is a different level the numbers Mbappe will put up won’t ever surpass Henry natural talent.
Henry missed great chances too bro. I prefer Henry for sure, but it is definitely close between them. It's a mater of what sort of player do you prefer. Henry more involved generally, more complete, while Mbappe is a killer in moments with his quick feet and ability to get a shot/cross before defenders can react.
"He's like a laxative he's straight through you, and you're absolute powerless to do anything about it. And everyones standing around going, what the hell was all that" 😅
2 of my favourite players of all time and both strikers. R9 and Henry. Both complete strikers. They could pick up the ball anywhere on the pitch and go past 7/8 players and score. I love these types of strikers. For as many goals Haaland scores, he has nowhere near the ability of a peak Henry. I remember watching rival fans clapping him off the pitch after he just cooked their team. Brilliant player.
He was the best player in the world for at least two and a half years straight, conservatively. The fact that he didn’t win the ballon d’or invalidates the trophy forever as it was that outrageous.
He never played a pivotal role in a Champions League winning season, or in any Euros or World Cup. Amazing player in his prime but compared to the people like Kaka, Ronaldinho, Cristiano, Messi, Ronaldo, Mbappe.. Henry will always be 2nd best.
@@Fondrom You invalidated your own argument by putting kaka and mbappe above him. Also if you knew who actually won the ballon d’or in 2003 you would at least know that Henry got robbed.
He was literally, unambiguously, pivotal in Euro 2000 lol. Won motm 3 times including the final. Was also important in the 09 CL, even if Messi was the main guy. Played great games vs Bayern and Lyon in the knockouts. Was rushed back for the final even though he wasn't fit. Also carried Arsenal to the 06 CL final. And was good for France in 06 too, even if Zidane shone more.
Became an Arsenal fan after moving to London in 2007 and I have fomo forever because I missed the chance to witness Henry in his full glory, it hurts. Thank you for the videos
Thierry Henry and Ronaldinho are by far my favorite living football legends, they are the reason I fell in love with football in the first place, they are part of my childhood... Henry should have won at least one or two ballon d'or in the 2003 and 2004 seasons, he was so unique and underrated back then, he was almost unstoppable and genuinely a very good all-rounder authentic player. ☯️✌️
Silkiest of them all. As a kid I hated him because he played for Arsenal but as soon as he went to Barcelona I changed my tune. Definitely deserved the Ballon d’Or over Shevchenko.
Him in that arsenal team which were very good anyway, was scary. I used to be scared when United played arsenal because of him, even though we had great players aswell, Henry was on a different level. I also used to try and copy him when i played football as a kid. That meg he did on danny mills for instance was something i tried alot and it works so well despite being quite simple. Nostalgia maybe distorting my view here but Henry at his very best around 03/04 was the best player in the world and is still the best striker the PL has ever seen.
He was the best player in the world from 2003-2004. Many people thought that at the time, including some of his France teammates. He was voted France's player of the year, ahead of Zidane. I can confidentially say that he was the best and most complete striker in the world from 2003 to 2006. And he was at least in the top 5 best players in the world from 2003 to 2006. Injuries and inconsistent form after 2006 dropped him down the ranks but still among the 10 best players in the world. He had one more great season in 2008/2009 at Barcelona where he had vintage performances like the El Classico. Just never had an iconic performance or goal in a finals.
andy townsend. if the player misses his shot. andy says "he should be hitting the target from there" if the shots on target but saved, "he should be beating the keeper from there" if he scores, "the keeper should be doing better there". according to andy, whatever happened, something else should of happend.
I will never, ever tire of watching Henry play. I have never seen anything like it, his ability to run at absolutely full pace with the ball at feet was insane. It felt like the man just teleported across the pitch. I'm not going to get into bests, greatests because people always have thier agenda's and biases. What I will say, is I have never experienced the sense of joy, excitement and bewilderment watching anyone else play football as I did when I watched Henry. I was lucky enough to be a teenager as he was bursting onto the seen, so I got to fully experience it, week by week, game by game. The pace, the skill and the complete inability to score an ugly goal.
@adamgordon2572 That was his best goal ever IMO. Even if Irwin was psychic hed still have to foul him to stop it. His back to goal with the ball rolling to him and literally a half second later its flying on path into the net.
This is a fantastic idea for a video. Thanks for putting it together. So many of my Spurs friends and family seem to completely underplay Thierry as a player. These videos truly serve as a reminder to the skill of Thierry. The man was quite simply a poet on the pitch. Pure poetry.
Everything he did was exceptional, not only his speed of the ball, but his speed with the ball was the scary part, best player to grace the prem league
Only Messi has had a 20+ goal & 20+ assist season since Henry did it with Arsenal. He was the best striker in the world from 2003-2006 and best player in the world from 2003-2004.
man had a frightening balance and mix of graceful technique, explosive pace, incredible strength and a reading of the game and opponents that made him a nightmare to play against. as a child, i remember the most frightening thing about him was that he didn't have to play well like that for the whole 90. in 5 minutes he could completely wrap up a game on his own.
Monster player. he could do it all and he had that killer mentality the Invincibles were all so famous for. You can see it as he plays. He doesn't just want to win, he wants to destroy you.
What a fantastic compilation. Henry really was the best in the world at his peak 2002-2006 (24-28yrs old). A disgrace they didn't give the ballon d'or to him. Love the contemporary plaudits you used, must've been hard finding all this from 20+ years ago. Wonder if stuff like this exists for Ronaldhino and other 2000s stars.
His movement was honestly so good and he was quick on top of that, but his positioning and dribbling made it even better, at 2:48 the dribble up to that goal most players aren't that controlled at getting the ball between two players like that and he moves his body to use his right most players just use their left. Such a good player.
watching this version of Henry was something else. I remember the confidence i had as a fan that we WOULD NOT lose. every. single. time. this team came up with the goods, even when days were hard. except for the UCL, of course. but 02/03 and 03/04 were unforgettable. i felt untouchable.
I started supporting Arsenal as a kid at around this time because I had older cousins and uncles who supported Arsenal. I don't have much recollection of the live games but I was lucky that one of my cousins always got the end of season goal show/compilations for Arsenal which wasn't easy to do back in those days living in Kenya. Either way, being able to watch back these performances by Henry & the rest of the team in this era was a real blessing. To this day, I still don't know how Henry missed out on the Ballon d'Or.
Nowadays youre gifted football wise to live in Kenya. Every match seems to be on tv here. In Ireland it costs about 140 thousand ksh a year just for SKY.
@@irieite9666 yeah, I've heard about this over the years from a few people I know in the UK but never in Ireland. It's crazy that the people there have to pay for all those different subscriptions to different broadcasters while folks in the rest of Europe & Africa just pay one broadcaster & forget about it. DSTV have done well in this regard over the last 2 decades.
For goals and assists he has to be one of the best to ever do it. I use to watch him play and he was amazing so exciting to watch you just knew he was always gonna do something amazing
@@24sumoOf course he was. The only reason he didn't score as often is his role and completeness. To get the most out of Henry you don't play him as an out and out striker like shearer
@@24sumo it’s just an opinion at the end of the day. Henry is the most talented player I have ever watched live And that’s including Peter Crouch and Emile Heskey 😂
There is no other striker like him currently in the world game. In his prime there was Zidane, R9, Ronaldinho, Pirlo, and many more alltime greats. It was stacked with legendary players.
It's still sad that he didn't win the Champions League with Arsenal. Just imagine the image of Thierry Henry lifting the trophy as captain in 2006. The fact that the final in 2004 was Porto v Monaco makes it even more ridiculous that Arsenal didn't win it that year.
I honestly think that they should've won at least 2 UCLs during Henry's time. One in 2003-04 would've been plausible, and the other being in 2006. It would've been a perfect send-off gift in 2006 - with Henry lifting the big ears in possibly his final match for Arsenal, solidifying his status as the greatest player to have ever played for the club and in the Premier League. I think he probably would've left a year earlier if they won in 2006 as well cause he would've won almost every possible trophy there is to win. Not to mention, his chances of winning the Ballon D'or would've skyrocketed if he won at least one major trophy that year.
someone needs to do a video on why he's relatively so underrated. this guy was literally playing like r9 in the premier league. its not about how much he achieved (and he did achieve), its about the way he did it. He was an absolute specimen of a footballer. Haven't seen anyone like him since.
Always loved his goal against carragher where he runs 40 yards and nicks it off him, and motson just laughs and says “what more can you say about Thierry Henry”
Yeah great goal, but you could see at that point Henry was starting to slow down. A few years before, he would've clearly won the race to the ball, instead of having to fight Carragher off it.
Yeah would have been about 30 by that point I guess, a few years after this video, still skilful. Funny I always remembered him for his technique rather than pace, might be because I remember the latter years more
Of course. Without him I and millions of Arsenal fans around the world wouldn't BE Arsenal fans. He not only made people like me Arsenal fans, he made us love the sport like no other. Messi made us blind fans of football but Henry was the one who started the football fanaticism in us
@@jimbojimbo6873 🤣🤣🤣 my guy if you think so good for you. I'm not going to go into a back and forth with you with that level of delusion. What is obvious doesn't need to be explained and if it does then football is not for you.

Mbappe's WC legacy is levels above Mbappe. He has better stats in the CL KOs too, after he goes to RM he'll outclass Henry's league career as well. He's just 25.
I have only cried once in my life when my beloved Thierry Henry left arsenal for Barcelona this man made me fell in love with arsenal Thierry Henry no matter any players that come to arsenal no one can take your place the way I felt when you use to score when you use to touch the ball I can never get that feeling Thierry Henry I love you
Just scouring the internet. Tbh for this video it's all mostly from 1 source. There's a channel called DM Arsenal Archives who has uploaded a metric ton of raw footage from match of the day and other such programs, I've just been going through it and decided to make this comp.
He is the Best player to play in the Premier League. Ever. He should have Won the Ballon d’Or it was a disgrace he did not. At his peak he was the Best player in the World. I was sat behind him in the stands when he struck his goal vs Man City. Awesome
Can you imagine a prime Henry and Mbappe upfront together!!?!! Would be impossible to stop that combination, Henry creating for Mbappe etc etc would be total CHAOS
They compare him to Drogba, Rooney, Shearer and Others.. The only point i would make is there was a time he was the best player in the world for 2-3 seasons by a landslide. There was no time at any point in the others careers where they regarded as best in the world, officially or unofficially..
@@geoffreywright9856 Drogba was great too, he was an amazing striker and I enjoyed watching he play as well! And about the difference between them both? There are plenty, both, on and off the pitch
Theirry Henry was one of the greatest players to ever exist he bought in an entire generation of Arsenal fans! He was so special and I’m so happy I got to watch him his whole career basically
I agree Henry had a fair crack for the Balon D’or in 2003. However you cannot deny that 31 year old Nedved who was running around like a 23 year old using every area of the field to create assists and score goals with either foot , from left foot crosses to right foot pin point crosses to slalom runs belting goals from left foot and right foot with precision outside the penalty box including scissor kick goals and incredible one touch shots against top teams like Real Madrid. For me Nedved just pips Henry for the Balon D’or
