I love how he glides back into the net, like it's his little cave, to celebrate the goal. Man what an awesome moment. Imagine how giddy he was right then.
FUCK YES!!! Thank you so much for uploading this! This was my very first NHL game (at about age 12) and it was one of the most amazing things I have ever witnessed. Brodeur jumped literally about 3 feet in the air. Epic.
Marty was my first idol in hockey and always will be. He is not only my favorite player but my idol and who I look up to and I hope to meet him and shake his hand someday, and get a autograph. He scored 2 goals, has 3 cups, gone to 5 finals, 4 or 5 vezinas, broke countless records, and is still playing. favorite goalie. period.
Oh man, I didn't realize someone had this up on RU-vid. Oh the horrid memories! lol. It's one of those things that just sticks in your head forever (and I don't remember any other part of that game, or even that series!)
I used to get a lot of third row playoff tickets to devils games before they moved to the rock but i wasn't at this game. I'm glad to see that fans from all teams respect marty. How can you not? Best there ever was -Devils fan
Not to mention Martin Brodeur missed TWO FULL seasons due to lockouts. Both were during his prime years. Try adding those wins, shutouts, etc he may have gotten or stanley cups. He missed half a season to injury and now another shortened lockout season. Lundqvist missed no seasons to lockout.
This little page out of the hockey history books was featured in the NHL 98 intro. And as an addendum, I know it goes without saying, but I am adding to the point. Brodeur is one of the best and most gifted humans to play a goalie in the National Hockey League.
i like this goal better cause marty actually had the thought process going and he wanted to do it himself. the other goals all he did was make the save and it just went in the empty nets.
You can say "He might even surpass him in the future" about just about everyone because anything can happen but the reality is that Marty is the greatest Goalie currently in the NHL history :)
Well said. Brodeur is surely a great goalie and his accomplishments speak for themselves, BUT as you said, his rank on the all-time list is only arguable, not definite. There is a tendency too often nowadays to attribute "best ever" status to the latest person to do something special. In reality, Brodeur owes a lot to pioneers like Glenn Hall, Terry Sawchuk, Ken Dryden, Ron Hextall and Patrick Roy. It's nice to see someone with a clue enter into these conversations.
I think Ron Hextall scored two goals. Billy Smith has one but he didn't actually shoot the puck, he was just the last guy to touch it before it went in the other team's net.
Goalies are always the one's who get criticized since they're the last one to be able to stop the puck from going into the net. Goal scorers are the ones who get credit. The 'most winningest goalie' can score goals to. Great job Marty.
Ron Hextall is the only goalie to score twice---by shooting the puck into the net both times (1987 playoffs---he won the Conn Smythe despite being on the losing team, and in the 88-89 regular season versus the Caps).
That was an awesome play by Marty Brodeur. Go Devils. To bad Marty Brodeur didn't play in the All-Star games this season. He would of enjoyed it and probably dominate the goalie events in the Superskills. But again that was an sensational play by a phenomenal goaltender.
I'm a ranger fan and brodeur is not my favorite guy, but props to him. Every goalie gives up goals every night, and every one deserves to score one themselves
The Devils had a delayed penalty called against them and the flyers pulled their goalie for the extra attacker because as soon as New Jeresy gained control of the puck, the play would be whistled dead and the penalty enforced. However, the Phildeliha player lost control of the puck and put it into his own net. The last New Jeresy played to touch the puck was Brodeur so he got credit for the goal. Tht goal stood up as the game winner.
I'd personally rate Patrick Roy, Terry Sawchuk, Glenn Hall and Ken Dryden along with Brodeur in the top 5. Put them in whatever order you want, but they were all successful and were all pioneers at the position in some respect. I personally put Roy ahead of Brodeur not only because of the records but because he perfected and proliferated a style of play that every professional goalie uses at least some of the time, even unconventional goalies like Brodeur, Dominik Hasek, and Marty Turco.
I'm glad someone caught the misspelling of "illiteracy", and did you notice I used "you're" instead of "your"? It's kind of a play on the point I was making.
I know this doesnt have anything to do with the actual goal but I love brodeurs style, see at thye beginning his save, he plays like an old school goalie
There's not even a comparison. Brodeur is called 'The Legend' and for obvious reasons. He's not only a championship winning goaltender but holds virtually every NHL record for the position, several which will never be broken. Lundquist is a good, solid netminder who has had some regular season success but not in the playoffs. He fails as it's widely known that he has a weak glove hand, especially up high and fails to control rebounds. Nobody has been better than Brodeur, case closed.
He was the last NJ player to touch the puck before the other team put the puck in their own goal. As Adam said, he didn't score it, he was credited with it. Still love Marty, tho!
Gotta love the meadowlands, the crowd celebrated that one for 10 mis after the goal, I miss that place. The montreal bench were smiling too, what could they do
BTW, to schafejod, five goaltenders have scored goals by shooting into the net as is the case here (Hextall did it twice); the most recent one was by Evgeni Nabokov in 2002. Five other times, the other team committed an own goal; most recently in 2006.
You forget to mention that Lundqvist has only been in the league for 7 seasons while Broduer has been in for 19, almost 3 times the amount Lundqvist has, and Lundqvist does have a Vezina trophy
Well, his second goal wasn't actually scored by him. The Flyers kinda put the puck in their own net, so Marty got credit for it. But this one was all him and it's awesome!
let's not kid ourselves if luongo hadn't been out with an injury for the past few months, he would by far be ahead with the shutout numbers..good on mason, but i mean we can't forget how effective luongo is...he's right up there with the best no doubt.
Wrong. He has a playoff goal and a regular season goal, just like Hextall. The difference is Hextall shot both of his in, Brodeur only shot one in and was credited with the other after being the last Devils player to touch it before the opposition put it into their own net.
