Hey guys I'll make a part 2 soon, so let me know what to include! Also which hit do you think was the dirtiest? (I didn’t include the Todd Bertuzzi sucker punch because this video was only of dirty body checks)
I can't remember the year this game took place, but it was between the Anaheim Mighty Ducks and the Dallas Stars and one of the Stars players made a nasty hit on Teemu Selanne that knocked him out of the game. Then, all hell broke loose during that game.
Dirtiest? Hard to say with all the head shots - it's close between Torres on Hossa and Cooke on Savard. In terms of ones you should include in part 2: Trevor Gillies's head shot and punches on Eric Tangradi, Trevor Gillies' jumping Cal Clutterbuck, Gary Suter's cross check to the face of Paul Kariya (I remember that in Nagano, he got booed every time he touched the puck for that because the Japanese fans wanted to see Paul Kariya play), Ulf Samuelsson's knee on Cam Neely, Brad Marchand low-bridging Sami Salo, Vaclav Varada's boarding of Krys Kolanos, Todd Bertuzzi on Steve Moore... those are all the ones I can think of right now. Well, and umpteen more knee-on-knee hits by Marchment and Cooke.
McDavids elbow on Kotkaniemi. Maybe not the hardest hit, thankfully no serious injuries there, but it was extremely dirty. Edited the name of Kotkaniemi, wrote Heiskanen initially.
Matt Cooke is a such a disgrace to the game. Despite the fact Keith's hit on him was dirty, I don't think anyone felt bad for him. You reap what you sow.
I don't watch NHL, I just got this video on my recommended. It's hilarious to me that the top 20 comments are all talking shit about Matt Cooke. I have no idea who this man is, but I know I am supposed to hate him.
@@wolfumz Hello! Now we can all feel better not having to watch Matt Cooke play ever again. Complete lack of respect for the sport and of other players.
Modano getting dropped at 6:58 has some attitude era WWF vibes going on, even the announcer "can't believe we just saw that" of course Modano got quite the payday in that lawsuit lol
How Dale Hunter was allowed back in the league is beyond me. That hit after Turton scored was one of the worst ever because the play is dead after a goal and he went head hunting. When the Caps hired him as a coach I wanted blood.
This was the hit i remember when i think of 'dirtiest of all time'. Absolute bush league garbage. His excuse after was that he was 'finishing the check' and 'didnt realize he scored'. Complete garbage. Turgeon separated his shoulder if I remember too and was out of the playoffs.
The fact that Cooke was allowed to play in the NHL for such a long time is honestly just depressing, especially seeing him with a letter on his jersey as if that guy was some kind of role model to look up to.
@@Hughjanus720 you must watch hockey strictly for the violence... When there's no skill, when you are a violent player because you have no skills, that shit shouldn't be allowed in game. It's selfish, make a career out of ending others careers. Pitiful. I like hockey for everything else, aside from the unnecessary, illegal violence. It literally is assault. Violence that is within the guidelines is cool with me, but some players really need a reality check, they think they can get away with anything.
Love the comradery at 8:55, the way his two teammates turned immediately at exactly the same time, thinking exactly the same thing "Ima fuck this guy up!"
Thank you for putting this together! I think it clearly shows you have three types of players: 1. Players who make bad choices, or just make an unfortunate hit at an inopportune time. 2. Decent players who make repeated bad choices, like Marchand, Tom Wilson & Kadri, but all of these guys have showed that a player can mature and start making better decisions. I especially despise Wilson for some of his worst hits, but in discussions, I have always said he does not need to play like that, he really has talent, and he showed some of that in the Caps recent playoff run. I suppose you could say the same for Marchand and Kadri as far as talent. 3. Predatory hitters: Scott Stevens, Matt Cooke, Ty Domi, Claude Lemeiux, Brian? Marchment, and I am sure I missed and forgot some. I honestly do not care that the NHL had no rules to specifically protect players; Scott Stevens and Matt Cooke clearly displayed serial predatory behavior, and seemingly enjoyed injuring opponents. Full disclosure: I am a Bruins fan, and I do like Marchand; however, I never liked when Brad made stupid choices, especially when it could/did injure someone. Those are just dumb, selfish actions that almost always hurt one's own team.
I don’t think they did it because they enjoyed injuring people I think they did it better the chances they had at winning the games and they did it to be… powerful and to bully other players so that they seem menacing or something because if you look back at the Steven Kariya (mind my misspelling plz) vid you will see he is enraged that he came back out I don’t think he did it to be mean I think he did it to get him off the ice
I like Marchand as a player but not when he does hes stupid hit. This is sound like hi dont like Mickael Jackson as a child molester but i like hes music. For me the way i realy work my life you are a fucking dangerous human your self because you have two faces just like 90% of the world you live in.. wy do you think the is full of dramatic situation.
I wouldn't put Stevens in the same category as Cooke, all of Stevens' hits were legal and helped the Devils win the Stanley Cup. Obviously, he'd be suspended for them now but that's what makes hockey different, the way it evolves.
haha more haters. Dude, grow up. I saw at least 3 different hits that were FAR MORE dangerous and I do not see you running your mouth about that? Fucking haters
Curious how many of these players had to retire after these hits? Some of them look so damn brutal that they had to have long term issues. I think 15:30 is the hit that ended Cam Neely's career.
Savard had to retire after Matt cooke hit, Horton had to retire after Rome hit, Neely had to retire after Samuelson hit. Raffi Torres and Matt Cooke are the two most disgusting players I've ever seen
Wouldn't be the first time a known dirty player had a letter. Crap, Dale Hunter was Washington's *captain* for five seasons! And he was a very dirty player.
3:00 Downie is currently sitting in Jamaica undergoing Magic Mushroom treatment for the years of Concussion, Anger, and drug abuse he went through as an enforcer. After seeing what he did in the NHL, it’s cathartic watching him break down in tears.
Matt Cooke is a criminal. Was happy to see Duncan Keith put a dirty hit on Cooke, although Keith too had a couple features here as well. Awesome video.
The worst for me is the Chara one where he decapitated the guy on the box glass. Second is the cross-check to the neck straight in to the edge og the box. Both looks like intent to kill
I thought the same thing... Dude could be dying for all anybody knows, but instead of making sure he gets quick medical attention, we fight literally on top of his unconscious body....
I often find myself apologizing for the Canucks having drafted him. He might be the dirtiest regular player in the NHL over the last 20 years. (Trevor Gillies was worse, but he only played 57 NHL games.) Tom Wilson is starting to get up there with all his head shots, though.
7:00 talk about a bad day at work! 😅 I remember a clip from an old VHS of classic sport fights where some ice hockey player with a mullet had his stick taken off him by a man in the crowd, so he went into the crowd to fight the guy 😅. No idea of the teams but I think it was a US match.
im glad to see the scott stevens on lindros hit was in here, that one basically was the start of the end of his career. I was fuming. But also the hit Lindros had on Andreas Dakyl (or however it's spelled)...that one deserved to be on here as well.
I just finished watching Goon for the first time. Amazing film! I had no idea Ice Hockey was this violent!!!… It’s mad entertaining though. Those players are brave!
Pierre Turgeon was never the same player after that hit (shoulder never fully healed). The hit also cost the Islanders as they lost their best player, next playoff round, and super star player for multiple years. He had 58 goads and 74 assists that year (career highs by far), continues play for 13 more years, averaging 22.8 goals per year. Prior to the hit he averages 36 goals per season (6).
@@mikejackson6570 And was a well-known scumbag on top of it all. The play was completely over, can't claim heat-of-the-moment, or "things happened too fast..."
to be fair, that's not why his numbers went down so much, as the leagues scoring was an all time high in 93 and it went down every year after that, the 98-04 seasons had the lowest scoring ever. Guys with UNDER 80 POINTS were top 10 in 2004. Thats why guys like Sundin Iginla Alfredsson and Datsyuk don't have more career points, and especially Jagr. Jagr had 3 seasons in the KHL after the rangers, plus the 04 05 season, you take those into account and the era he played in? His adjusted points compared to say, Gretzky's prime era, would be likely about 2500 career points. Far from Wayne but, much more than everyone else.
I was at the Bruins Pens game when Matt Cooke made that hit. As a Pens fan, the rest of the game was really uncomfortable in the stands, to say the least
I've watched and played hockey for years. I love the sport. With that said...there is absolutely no place in the game for a dirty hit. The rule should be changed. If a player misses games due to a dirty hit...the b***h that caused the injury shall miss the same amount of time. Keep the game fast, competitive, physical and clean.
I'm 27 and just recently got into hockey. As a someone who loves physical sports, I would of loved to play hockey growing up. I wouldn't love getting hit anything similar to people in these videos
@@erikl827 yes hockey is the best sport!! Unfortunately though if you played as a kid you would deal with MANY dirty players. That's how i broke my collar bone when i was 15, the hit was so late that the ref didn't even see (puck was down in other teams end and i was still in my own defensive zone, i had passed the puck up ice). Incidents/injuries like this made local leagues here in Canada raise the age for hitting. Because of stupid people. Some young teens just play to hit, instead of playing good hockey and taking opportunities when they come, and knowing when to back off. It really always comes down to the player though in my opinion, raising the age made no difference. In fact i think it might have made it worse since teenagers were mad they had to wait longer to hit, and then they would hit even more dirty. But yea hockey is awesome and i still played after the break but i absolutely cannot stand dirty players! No player making an NHL salary should ever make dirty hits like the ones in this video, they should be banned and have their contracts terminated
@@dane7157 My son's been playing 5 years now and the single biggest problem is refs who won't call the dirty hits and leagues that won't enforce any real discipline. When kids figure out they can elbow kids in the head right in front of the ref and not even get a penalty, they learn to be dirty.
I mistakenly hit someone from behind once when I was pretty young, Buddy turned at the last second and I didn’t have the reaction time to correct myself, I was shook. Seeing hits like these give me the chills because it’s really no joke.
I`m from the UK, grew up in the 70`s;......this is the sport I most regret never having the chance to play. These are some tough moments but there is NO team sport (without a net in the middle) that doesn`t experience moments like this.
I thought you guys had a hockey league in UK? i realize everything is over-shadowed by soccer there. Sorry you missed out, but you can enjoy it with us here on RU-vid!
@@inconnu4961 The league came much later here in the UK. I`ve always been fascinated by the intense rivalry between the USA & Canada. Although my knowledge is limited regarding Hockey, growing up I did know that the USSR reigned supreme, closely followed by Czechoslovakia. I also recall the incredible miracle on ice in 1980.
No he wouldn't. He was good for the time but today? He would be mediocre. You're like one of those people that think Gretzky would be any good today too.
As a rugby fan and former player, we put so much emphasis on head contact in our sport nowadays, some of these hits make us look like school kids in a slapping contest.
It's why I really respect rugby, they always tout not being football(soccer) and they're very physical but they also respect the game. Hockey nowdays is much better, especially in the EU, but most people don't understand how much damage that much of mass (the player) tackling a head can do. It's like two cars crashing at 30kmh, might seem slow but it basically becomes a 60kmh crash into a wall.
I don’t know hardly anything about hockey, but I remember seeing a dude crack a guy in the back of the head with his stick one time. That’s gotta be the dirtiest shit I’ve ever seen. Enjoyed the video!
That's for sure one of the dirtiest plays ever, the guy who did it never played in the NHL ever again. I didn't include it in this one though because it was only body checks!
Seriously!! It's great to gang up and beat the sh*t out of someone who KO'd your teammate. But it's not okay to reassault your unconscious teammate and skate on his face!! 🤦♀️
@@donaldstevens932 Funny that I don't think all of Matt Cookes and Tom Wilson suspension add up to Steve Downie 25+ games he got for his first NHL offense. Every team needed a scumbag in that ear it was cheapshot headshot city especially during the playoffs. So much of this reel was in the 2004 - 2014 decade just after the lockout.
So sad to see so many guys careers cut short by obvious penalties. I know it was a different time but holy fuck the blatant disregard for the after effects of head trauma is depressing to come to terms with so many years later.
@@genericusername9551 arguably the most entertaining era in hockey history actually, 2000s was also up there. Gen z's don't like violence and physicality, so i understand why you don't like it.
@@MrTedMcForehead Strong Disagree. if you wanna watch guys get CTE and have their brains bleed out their noses, go watch boxing. I'd rather watch an actual sport.
@@SynapseNervosa So many neanderthals who enjoy watching serious life-shortening injuries and no regard for actually playing the REAL game in the comments, and people wonder why the sport isnt as popular. because hockey fans gatekeep and talk about "glory days" as if there is no way to make the sport grow without violence being a first priority.
Coming from Oz I bloody love it mate, and it's all fair bump play on or punch on for a bit, just like rugby or AFL over here have a look at the dirtiest bumps in AFL especially the late 80's early 90s 😂😂😂😂, but that's why they get the coin 👍👍👍
One aspect I've always lived by in ice hockey is that some people deserve everything they get as far as retaliation. When asked in later years if I'd want to be a ref, my answer was/is: "No. I'm never objective."
@@jacobking962 Rome and Cooke don't do it anymore either. What's your point? Not defending either one of them, especially Cooke, but 63 will always carry that reputation around.
@@jacobking962 You keep saying that, but it only makes it worse. Why does he need to do things that could end players careers when he's a Hall of Famer? As a Bruins fan, you will probably look past the cheap stuff, but to everyone else, he's just as dirty as Cooke and Rome and whoever else.
@@corygarfield86 it was a bit late, but it wasn't dirty on the same level as these other cheap shots. For the editor to put it into the same category is an insult and shows pure ignorance about hockey and the situation. There is a world of difference between hitting someone slightly late versus deliberately trying to injure like most of these other clips.
My one question about all these dirty hits is this...I only played the Sunday night pick up games after coaching my sons youth games. That being said, how can you actually defend your teammate when they leveled such a sicking hit as shown in these videos. I'm all for a nice body check here and there but if I had a teammate like a COOKE I'd be jumping the pile to pound on him also!
So I played competitive hockey and I'll defend my teammates most of the time but sometimes you don't. I heard one story where a star player was a cunt every game and finally the enforcer decided to just let him get his deserved ass whooping.
You know that's a good question but honestly I think it all comes down to obligation. It's like this for any sport really not just hockey. I've seen it in football, Baseball, and Basketball as well. Whenever a player delivers a dirty hit I'm pretty sure the reason the teammates defend them is because they feel obligated to since their on the same team.
That first hit was the same hit that ended my hockey career. I got hit from behind after a full extension for a slap shot, twisted me even more and tore muscles and ligaments in my spine.
@@juhos30000 it's natural for people to dip their head right before impact, you see it in football all the time so yeah, it happens quick. Hit somebody in the head doesn't make it dirty, it's the intention behind the hit.
The difficult part is that so many people extend their legs through the hit which means if the timing is off then you're taking the guy's head off even if you didn't intend to.
They pretend to "stand up" for their teammates. But they clearly dont give a shit about someone maybe dying there on the ice. They just see a chance to fight and are excited to throw a few punches. They should all be banned 10+ games for obstructing first aid on a critical injury.
I had the chance to talk to Niklas Hjalmarsson about the hit on Jason Pominville. He said he didn’t know who had the puck, still no right to hit him from behind though
Pierre Turgon was a beauty, and an NHL92 great. That hit by Hunter came after a playoff series winning goal, and Hunter was upset they lost. Turgeon was injured well into the following season if my memory is correct. Blind side a guy after the game is over because he scored, so dirty.
Turgeon should have been in the Hall of Fame a long time ago. I mean, Kevin Lowe, really? He was never better than the fourth-best defenseman on his own team. And I'm an Oilers fan.
A lot of the older ones were legal at the time…like Scott Stevens on Paul kariya and his one on Eric Lindros. Up until 2010 it was legal to target the head. The only reason some of those hits were because of boarderline elbowing, charging, interference, hit from behind, boarding or leaving the feet. As long as you stayed low and kept your elbow tucked in, you could blindside someone’s head with your shoulder KO them with no call. There were also way more fights and line brawls. Shit used to be crazy in the nhl
It’s more like how many were sent out to do it, leftovers from the goon days. The chief, Buick used to deliver the classic hip check , with the opposing player flat on the ice looking at the referee for a call that wasn’t to come.
@@thehistory5401 And Downie was coming full speed, used the net/goalie as a screen and left his feet and went right at his head. Puck or not, that's intent to injure.
I remember a playoffs game in the late 90's where Claude Lemieux hit Kris Draper from behind, face first into the boards so hard Draper's face burst open. Even as a hard core Aves fan that made me sick to see. Also, poor Modano. lol. Mans can't even get to the ambulance before being dropped again.
as a lacrosse player which is kinda like hockey i have seen a lot of injuries but not as bad as this. about last year i was at a tournament that my team ended up winning, and this one team was just fouling all over the place, this one kid was on the ground for 10 minutes everyone was worried i don’t know what happened but all i know is it look intentional.
I remember when that happened to Barrie. All of CO had Cooke's head on reward and were hunting for him. Never have we wanted to see another team lose a round so bad.
Marchand: *Pulls out a baseball bat and hits another player multiple time* NESN comenators: Well marchand there was just showing all his sporting skills and got tangled up with another player. I just don't think expected anyone to skate near him while he was swinging that bat
Jack Edwards is a disgrace to hockey commentating. Marchand: Pulls gun out and shoots someone Jack Edwards: Well you know I think Marchand was doing a little target practice and the other guy just seemed to jump in front of the gun!
It scares the hell out of me when I see anyone go into the fencing response after being hit. This is the reaction your body takes to protect itself during a serious brain injury and most people have serious lifelong cognitive health problems after these injuries😢
