Martin released a new model into their 17 series line at the 2019 Winter NAMM Show. The new DSS-17 adds a slope-shoulder dreadnought to the vintage looking line of guitars. With its slope or round shoulder silhouette and Whiskey Sunset finish this Martin draws quick comparisons with the Gibson J-45. But wait! The round shoulder dreadnought also has competition from Taylor with the new 317e Grand Pacific being released this year! So let's compare them! How do these three guitars stack up against one another in the vintage leaning slope/round dreadnought market.
We want to hear from you and know what you think about these fine instruments.

The DSS-17 has to played to be fully appreciated. It is light, responsive and resonant. It responds to the lightest touch sweetly and is LOUD when plated hard. It is alive and captivating. All solid wood, dovetail neck joint. Great value. Great guitar!

Excellent review! Brought out the differences in the sound of three great guitars really well. If you like a light sound, go for the Taylor; if you like a big warm sound, go for the Gibson; if you like the sweet spot in between, go for the Martin.

Thank for doing this! On one of your previous shootouts I asked that you do a comparison of the DSS-17 and the 317...and throwing in the new walnut Gibson was a good idea. But I’ve owned a DSS-17 and now have a 317 and they sound WAY better in person than they do in this vid. Just another reminder of the limitations of judging something as hard to capture as guitar tone via RU-vid vids... BTW: Street on the Martin and Taylor is nowhere near $2,000. Closer to $1,300-$1,400 without electronics.

Coming from a recording point of view: The Taylor sounds a bit “meh” compared to the other 2 but it would likely be the best choice for sitting well in a busy mix. Coming from a songwriting point of view, I think the Martin has the most inspiring vibe. For live solo I’d go with the fullness of the Gibson.

Paul Fowler nailed it. After watching this vid, I bought one out of Nashville, used, with a hard case, a very nice case I might add. Upon arrival it looked like it had never been played. I am strictly a fingerstyle player, so my assessment is from that point of view. I’ve owned the Gibson J-45 standard and Regal. This DSS-17 is the new love of my life. This thing is punchy, boomy, resonant and a joy to play. I only paid $1,300 for mine, so quite a good deal. The J-45 still holds a place with me, but I really love this Martin. I think these will only go up in value.

The Gib is incredibly well balanced. I don't know how they do it, but in usual tradition, the Martin has a deeper low end but I don't hear the boom of the D-18 which it nice because I find that irritating. They both sound great, even though different. The Taylor is balance but muted. I say 1- Gibson 2- CFM, 3- Taylor.

With this particular lick the Martin was the winner. It had clarity and balance. The J45 was a bit too boomy and lacked low end articulation... But I think the J45 would be the winner with other stuff, or perhaps recorded differently. The Taylor had similar clarity to the Martin, but was too shimmery (which seems to be Taylor's thing these days with v bracing- (and maybe a step too far in that direction?).

I took my Martin DSS-17 to my guitar tech to get a K&K Pure Mini pickup installed. When I opened the case, my tech laughed at it for the clear ripoff of the Gibson J-45. He played it, and noted it sounds nothing like a Gibson. I have to agree, but it's still a great guitar. The Gibson (if you get a good one) is just so full and rich sounding.

I couldn't stand the stock monel strings on my DSS-17. Switched to Daddario nickel-bronze 12's and the guitar has more life to it's sound. Really gets more out of that advanced jumbo sized body. I think therefore that this would have been a different comparison if all used the same strings. However, the way it was done is "off the rack".

In the land of great dreadnoughts, which is a Studio somewhere in West Texas, there lives my favorite acoustic guitar. A J-45 from the mid 60's. Nothing fancy. A player, really, but is also the owner's personal guitar, out of an impressive collection. They have a '54 D-18 and a 60's Texan, to name a few. I love recording whichever guitar is available. But the recorded sound of the Gibson J-45 is the best. I love Martins and I get that they want to get on the increasingly popular market for slopped shoulder guitars, but this one came third IMHO. And I get why Taylor keeps talking about the Grand Pacific sounding like some famous guitar BUT as if it was already recorded! It's totally true. So I would have both the Gibson and the Taylor for that reason. And, as commented elsewhere, the affordable G-45 Studio is a very nice sounding example! ⚡️

I own a DSS-17 and I'm not ashamed to say that J45 kicked it's butt. However... what does the DSS-17 sound like when outfitted with phosphor bronze strings? I intend to restring mine and find out if life ever stops getting in the way. Regardless, a J45 is on my bucket list. I am not, never have been, and probably never will be a fan of the thin sounding Taylors. Thanks for the comparison.

@thejeffersonlee
@thejeffersonlee 3 года назад
My order goes Martin, Taylor, Gibson. I can't decide if the cutaway is taking away from the high end on the Gibson, but it's very mids heavy. The Martin and Taylor models fall into the stereotypes I've noticed over the years. Taylors are hard to make sound bad, very forgiving, but don't always lend themselves to very nuanced playing. Like 90% of their sound is on all the time, and it's good, but there are some spikes when hit hard while some things get lost in the mix. Martins can do everything you throw at it and sound absolutely amazing, but you better have your stuff together. They will let you sound bad if you aren't ready for it. Like driving a very expensive, very fast car. Excellent, highly crafted machines that make it possible to do great things, beautiful things, but not the most forgiving if you aren't confident in your touch. But man, you can coax all the subtlety and nuance you want from a Martin and make people weep in awe. The Gibson sounded good. I like their J45 and "square-shouldered" guitars, but this one didn't seem game to do much beyond sounding "pleasant." Like an NPR news broadcast. But that certainly has its place, too. I'd rather have the Martin, hear where I'm not up to snuff and fix it, but also have the extra horsepower on tap when I want things to get hairy.

Wow. The Taylor (to me) really didn’t compare to the other two. It’s bell like chime I think was overshadowed by the depth and mid presence and balance displayed by the Martin and Gibson, with the Gibson taking the W for me because it has a nice balanced bass end with a warm high end which gives it (to me) great balance and tone. These new 'slope shoulder' models are pretty much only a visual gimmick, as they have a longer scale length that makes them more akin to a square shoulder dreadnought than a J45. The playability of the Gibson neck is a big factor in the J45 appeal, and it seems it still retains a unique combination of features not found on these other guitars. The Martin is basically a Martin dread with J45 styling cues, but that's it.

@@powbobs well it's not really weird if you're taking into account the type of music you're playing. Each one has a different vibe. For example I prefer most taylor guitars for pop and modern hard rock. Taylor definitely has a more modern sound. Martin and Gibson sound more vintage like country, bluegrass and folk. It is impossible to pick a guitar here. Sound is only partially shaped by the guitar, the rest is the player. You cannot tell how it feels and sounds in "your own hands". In your hands, many would agree the J-45 sounds best. If you are skinny, a violin back is great. If your over weight, not do much. If your hands are smaller, a smaller neck will feel better. Larger fingers, you may want a larger nut and fret width. The Taylor comes with Elixir strings from the factory, Martin has their own. Was the neck scale the same on all 3 guitars? (25.5)? Fret board? (12 in. radius, graduated, 9.5 to 12?). All 3 were not Mahogany, even though Sapele is a type of Mahogany. Are the tops Sitka, Spruce, Cedar? Are the actions all the same? Are the frets the same in hardness and size? Are the nuts all bone as well as the saddles. Are the bridges made of the same material?

@@maraviyoso8473 Nah man I'm 34 and I've never heard a Taylor I liked over a Martin Or Gibson. I tried really hard a few times. The first guitar I ever played that was over 500 was an 900 dollar Taylor, I was so excited to play it and was super disappointed. They always leave me disappointed. Some people love them though.

@@williamcatalano1762 so you're a frustrated bass player. In fact, the only Martin I owned. . . it didn't last a month with me. Same for Gibson (and this comes from a LP lover). My Taylors are all keepers.

I ran the audio through my acoustic spectrum analyzer and the Taylor wins by 40% over both the Martin and Gibson. Just because your ear doesn’t pick it up .... doesn’t mean it isn’t there.

I have had a Martin D16E for over a year now (figure 800-1000 hrs practice/playing on it, I don't gig.) I also have a Yamaha FGX5. I like a narrow body but the FGX5 has all 3 beat for a bit less money. I like the Yamaha electronics better than the Fischman. The FGX5 really comes alive (I can use more gain with the Yamaha) through my Fishman Loudbox mini charge (I always play outside.) Yes would like to equip a non electronic with the K+K. My call here. I go with the Martin but very,very close. I would like to have any of the 3 featured here.

The J-45 and DSS-17 were at least close, with the win to the J-45. The Taylor sounded like needed a ton of coaxing, and it didn't fair well in any of the segments.

The Martin and Gibson are about equal to my ear. The Taylor is shrill, tinny. The other two have a depth to them I much prefer.
@rodrigo329

The Martin had a deep low-end, but lesser than the Gibson, and a mid boost. The Gibson had a deep low-end as well, and a slight sparkle on the highs. The Taylor sounded closer to the Martin, and had the less highs, to my surprise. But did I hear less volume on the Taylor? Overall, seems the Taylor and Martin are turned more alike, while the Gibson seems to have a U-curved sound spectrum, less mids, more bass and more highs. The Martin gave more of a "wall of sound", the notes blended together, and sounded woody and beefy. The taylor was similar, and gibson was a bit more mordern, actually, but not by much. That's what I heard. I like the Martin, then the Taylor, and finally the Gibson.

Please Martin, STOP putting Retro strings on your new guitars. :-( The J-45 is sweeter but ONLY because of the Retro strings on the Martin. Put some Phosphor Bronse SP's on that DSS-17 and see what happens! BTW, Taylor is out of the game in this comparison, not even in the same league.
