This week Martin is meeting with Captain Peter Starling of the Royal Army medical core to find out about his grandfather's medical training before the second world war.
When he was just 10 years old, Martin Freeman's father died of a heart attack. As a child, the actor tried to show people that he was a "brave little four-foot thunderball". "I've only realised how tough it is as I've got older," he says.
The early loss of his father had another effect: Martin knows "embarrassingly little" about his dad's side of the family. To fill in the gaps, Martin begins by researching the life of his grandfather, Leonard.

it's really ironic to see Martin playing the role of a doctor in Sherlock when his family had military field medics in it....the more you know....

God. I was so fortunate that my own grandfather made it home (very lucky he wasn't in Dunkirk). Very emotional for him. And then for him to play the very role his grandfather did years later!

It was very moving to see Leonard's name in stone because it made him real, tangible, and important. His sacrifice was not a trivial matter. It was absolutely worthy of remembrance. What a pity that Martin's father didn't know about that monument. It would have been great not only for him, but also to bring his boys.

It's amazing that he is at wenlock barracks which is in hull only for him to find his family had lived there previously. I passed these barracks daily for 3 years and probably about 3 times a week now. I always stare going passed as I wanted to become a medic for the army and wondered if I would be based there xxx

Anyone else find it interesting that Freeman’s grandfather was an army doctor, and he played an army doctor as an actor?

My Grandfather was a Stuka gunner in 3.StG 77 that participated in many sorties in this region before and during Dunkirk. So many sorties my Grandfather could not recount just one from the many, yet in Mr. Freeman's case one bomb was all it took to impact his ancestors.

Eric Stevens, too many young men on either side lost their lives carrying out the orders belligerent old men. I hope the surviving veterans found some measure of peace.

My Grandfather wished to have daughters and not sons after witnessing numerous air and battle campaigns. The loss of sons, brothers, and husbands during war and the countless casualties weighed on him after awhile. He beat the odds and survived the war in a very dangerous profession, and got his wish 2 daughters born in 1944 and 1949.

The lesson that should be learned here isn't that these people, relatives, were extraordinary, it's that the ordinary people lived the lives they did.

Anyone with an ancestor who fought and died fighting fascism should consider what they are doing to honour their relatives. Today more than ever.

... and when they left Dunkirk, it left France open to the German rushing in. The WWI Treaty among the Allies at that time was for the English and Dutch to guard the northern access to German, and the French the guard the entire eastern line. Once the Brits evacuated, the French couldn't move from their lines fast enough, and were caught in the back by the Germans.
