Isn’t it sad that a guy like Martin can explain these issues so clearly and honestly and yet our government can’t even issue any sort of information about help.
Like keeping quiet about the 500,000 illegal immigrants who won’t be affected by this price cap? Smile, because your tax money will be spent feeding them and keeping them nice and toasty warm in their hotel rooms.
I'm really glad I bought a load of solar panels over the last 3 years. by using a Tie Inverter with the solar panels, you pump electricity from the solar panels straight back into your house by just using a power socket. I know it's weather dependant but it's so nice on a sunny day looking at your smart metre and seeing 0 pence per hour, it feels like I'm sticking my fingers up to the energy companies. :)
Nice to hear someone explain that it's the unit price that's capped. No other media articles explain this, and it makes me wonder if the journalists writing them understand this. Good work, as always
Thank you Martin , this is a disgrace, never ever thought that something like this would happen in our country , politicians need to get in to the real world 🌎 😢
Don't thank him, he said it's Russia's fault, its not, its the green tax created by our government, he knows this, and he's pushing propaganda for our government.
We operate within a global energy market which is being subjected to higher demand and now a constrained supply. Tell me who in the world you would like to deprive of energy in order to artificially lower prices?
@@ChrisLee-yr7tz How about removing the extra cost of Green tariffs which do nothing other than make 'green' energy profitable? Or restart the fracking operations to access the vast gas resource we have under our feet, because we could be self-sufficient in fuel if there was the will. Our coal reserves for example will last for 300 years!
Look I think everyone should fight this against these greedy utility gas and electric charges . We can’t afford the prices they are asking ,It’s impossible
Martin explained the situation very well. We are on a fixed income as we are retired, we just don't have the money to pay what these companies are asking. You can't give what you've not got. Don't they realise that, or are they just counting on the government paying up and getting their money at all costs. It's truly despicable.
Martin you are the best, wish there were more people in the world like you. I receive your emails regularly which are brilliant in advising how we can save on bills and manage debt etc., I managed to go on a fixed gas/electricity rate in time because of you. Thank you so much, so very grateful.
Here is how to be a multi millionaire and still genuinely care about ordinary people. Why are there so few politicians like this in the top ranks of power?
Hi, because most "leading" Politicians are only illuminati puppets. filling in until the world leader (Antichrist!) takes over: Please read the Book of Revelation! People must finally realize that we are living in the END of time, the 7 year rapture and tribulation with the ruler of the world (Antichrist, 666!) Is imminent. If you know the biblical prophecy of the end times and the plans of the NWO, you can easily see what is happening in the world. There is hope: convert to JESUS CHRIST in time, then everything will be fine soon !!! Remember: JESUS is GOD, see John 1! Read the New Testament, listen to Dr. Ron Rhodes and Roger Liebi on the end times, Rapture, Antichrist.
Let me be absolutely clear. I, as many like me, will be hit the hardest. I'm a disabled pensioner. Likewise, I'm at home all day, most days. People are saying, go and sit in a library to keep warm, that's just BS. Why, in this day an age, where corporations are making outrageously massive profits, from our misery, I won't be able to sit in my own home, and make a choice of heating or, eating. Well, I've taken the bull by the horns. I've stopped my DD, to a rip-off company, who massively overestimated my bill, and had £400.00 of my money in their account. Can you imagine, how much money, from others who suffered the same rip-off they had ? Making them even more money in interest from our money, that doesn't belong to them? Doing the maths, I'm only going to be £3.84 per week, worse off over a year + their increases, but we are all going to have to pay their increases anyway. So, here's my plan, pay on receipt of bill, whilst keeping my usage as low as possible. Standing charge is the kicker, and P's me right off. According to my supplier, we have to pay them to have their meters on our property to meter us, to pay them, what a fricking scam. So, they want to read their meter on my property, there is an entry fee of £100.00 per meter, to come onto my property. I'll update you when I take them to court for none-payment. Make sure that your home is weather tight, draughtproofing, every orifice. Make yourself as warm as possible, more importantly staying warm in the evening and when in bed, when it's the coldest. People laughed at nightcaps (I don't mean the drinking kind, lol) yet they do work, and keep the heat in your body. Get yourself a little camp stove, heat your water with a whistling kettle. In 2022, we're talking about issues from back in the day, when central heating, and double glassing was being talked about. Shame on this government, shame on the investors. People are going to die, mainly the old, and disabled.
Well said👏👏👏 Drag your feet when paying the bill and ask them to send a payment slip so you can pay it in cash at the post office. I normally get a bill and wait 2 months until the next bill is about to come out and pay the previous.. and so on. I'd rather owe them money than them owe me. I do this with all bills and it in the first year of doing it can save you hundreds on gas and electricity. Rates bills are the best for saving money on they are normally happy with half being paid each year and roll over the other half to the next year. Things are getting desperate for people. I have a friend who is so skint he goes to get petrol from the tesco pay at pump because he has found out he can still get petrol if he only has a pound in his account because it takes tescos 5 days to collect the money from his account. So he might have it by then. These are desperate times.
The higher our Bill's go the more VAT the gov receives this is all done by design. There need’s to be more people like Martin Lewis in this world. Who care and want to help people in need. I’m just great full I’m on a fixed rate for the time being but truly worried what will happen when my fix rate end in Feb and my wife goes onto statutory maternity pay at the same time.
@Luke Stephens Of course, that makes so much sense.......... NOT. Why do you have a problem with someone just trying to make people understand that this government is sitting back and letting its people be fleeced by these thieves?
Martin I hope you are getting enough support for what your work is taking out of you. One hears the sincerity and care in your concern for people - they need you to keep on saying and doing your piece. All power to you - and hopefully recognition from the country later this year.
He's worth millions, Martin is getting richer out of all of this. His support is covered & paid by the government to deflect the real cause of the price hike which isn't Russia's fault, its a green tax created by our government last year at the G7 summit - remember? Don't be fooled by him.
@ Frank Wilberforce Car Salesman No he doesn't care at all! If he cared, he would tell the truth by saying the government has put up the prices because of the green tax and would not lie to us by blaming it on Russia. This all started before the war!

I live alone, I earn around the UK average wage and don't claim any benefits or tax credits as I am deemed too wealthy to need those. The way things are going though, more help will need to come not just for poor families, but for single, middle earners too.
Absolutely. Not much is being said about people like us single deemed to rich on minimum wage. Seems earnings just over £700 a month is too much to claim any help, as a matter of fact earnings £490 and have a mortgage is classified as too much income to claim UC.
I am in the same boat as yourself. I will losing my current job in February in which case I will be in the middle of the next price increase. The only good thing going for me is I have an open fire and have already brought my coal & wood for the winter months.
I hope all the people like yourselves will realise if it's hard for you that when you hear about people like me who are disabled you'll realise we live on a pittance and are portrayed as scroungers. I turned my boiler off in April as I can't afford it. I have ill health and suffer with suicidal thoughts. I had a crisis team in recently to talk me out of it. But cutbacks meant I could only have a few weeks of help. If I can't pay my bills I will end my life. People say that if you talk about it you won't do it. Believe me, after 50 years of working hard and still having nothing. Then being asked to pay what I don't have I will end it. What a vile greedy world we live in where profit is more important than human's lives.
I have been there. You can choose to believe what I am going to tell you... or you can Ignore it. Up to you. When I was in your situation (and mine hasnt improved finacially at all but my mental health got a bit better) I was contemplating suicide every day, I had to come up with a reason, every day, not to do it. Then one day I told someone how I was feeling...and they told me, this: "If you are willing to end it all...then you should be willing to take a risk" That stuck with me. Do you know what I did? I tried to stop caring what others thought of me, good or bad, i tried to care less. I decided that If I was already prepared to suicide myself and made my peace with that... then I could put that on the back burner as a last last resort... If things got really bad...I could always kill myself THEN... but until then... there are a bunch of risks that I was avoiding because they could make things worse if they went wrong...but I stopped caring about that when I had already decided suicide was a valid option. I took my full benefits payment and booked a one way ticket out of the UK to southern India. Spent six months there and came back to the UK... stayed in the UK until the suicide feelings came back... then booked a one way ticket to Thailand, stayed there for three months then cambodia, then vietnam, then thailand again... three months three months three months... WHAT IS THE RISK? Benefits fraud? a court case? prison?... well theres always suicide AFTER that... might as well enjoy the freedom that comes with not being afraid anymore. Just my tuppence worth. What are they gonna do? kill you? lock you up?

If you are on a very low income, the percentage increase is terrifying. After rent and council tax, I have £355 a month left for everything else. Even with low use, and not having my heat or hot water on, my current usage is 14% of that. If it's going up by 79% (im a renter, so key meter) That's essentially around a quarter of my "discretionary" budget gone on electricity. Regardless of what we are told about the inflation rate, food has gone up well above inflation (somewhat ironically it seems to be a greater rise on the budget essentials). Even after batch cooking (thankfully I'm a veggie, so don't have to reheat everything - pasta is your friend!) I have no more notches on my belt. This is it, and I'm not even in the worst off category!!

I find it interesting that if you have solar panels they now are paying you between 3p and 5 pence per kW hr; depending on who you are with; but they are offering customers a 1 year fix of 83p per KW hr. I think that they should bring back grants, so everyone that can should get solar panels and storage battery. It would save building power stations and the French can keep their electricity!
With my solar panels on my HA home, my E-On Kw/hr rate is 28.82p with a standing charge (doubled in the six months I've been here) of 54.5p per day. It's Exporting like crazy, earning the HA useful cash, and they don't allow immersion heater use on it! Disconnected.
@@tallesmagno201 I'm sure it will run it without issue as, according to the PV guy who checked it for the landlord a couple of weeks ago, it's putting out around 2.5kw/h. but they removed the immersion heater cable. First I am an American whose been following this disaster, and that is what it clearly is, from the start, I could not figure how the UK got it self into this mess, until, you pointed out that in 2017, the UK government refused to subsidize, or take a position in the UK’s largest privately owned gas reserves Depot that would’ve held 70% of the UK‘s gas reserves at that point. This facility was then closed down, and the UK was fully thrown on to the world gas market, with no means to buffer its effect. This masterpiece of wishful thinking on the part of that government and its conservative Predecessors bought the UK where it is today. To put it simply you are in a war footing when it comes to energy, yet your government has not taken any of the steps that a prudent Government would, and should have taken, it is not like the warning sirens were not blaring all over the place. Will the coming Tory government do anything about this, that is an unknown factor, the other issue is what will the Russians do as winter comes on, with the Europeans buying all the gas they can get their hands on, and storing it, because they do have storage. There’s a high probability that somewhere between October and January the Russians will cut off gas, To the EU. Thus driving the price on world markets even higher, one of the reasons the price cap assessment, was switched from six months to three months. While they’re not saying this was the reason, the odds are that that was the reason. And I suspect that UK intelligence organizations have already made this prediction. The only real short term fix to this is what the Labor party put forward, with the ability to adjust for Russian actions affecting the world gas markets, and you still will have to spend money to protect those at the bottom of the economic scale, the life, and death question for a lot of UK citizens is what will this next government do?
The decision on the Rough off shore gas storage facilities was a disaster and yet even back then it was a simple matter to have some type of insurance buffer. Further the proposal for the creation of the Gateway gas storage facility in the Irish Sea was also dismissed even though there were private backers. The main issues started when the regulator Ofgem submitted an energy safeguarding proposal back in 2009, and the energy minister at the time was infuriated with this because he thought it was interfering with government policy. All this would be hard to make up.
The governments give the people what they want and tell them what they want to hear, then they act as scapegoats when it all goes wrong. No government can fix this, and the people will get what they deserve. The people wanted to shut down and destroy the economy to ‘save lives’ due to a virus, then spend billions injecting people with coercion with a trial drug. The people wanted to have a de-facto war with Russia over a civil war in Eastern Europe that has been going on for decades. Even before these two reasons there is the sheer amount of debt created by the burgeoning welfare state that is unsustainable. All this because the people want free money and to feel good…well, that can’t go on forever now can it.
Your website calculator was super helpful as a guide. Thank you Martin and team for doing what you can. Young people with families are going to really struggle and its no longer just the low income that need the help.
We actually need to encourage people on high incomes to reduce gas use as they can then use the savings to buy luxuries, it will help the most vulnerable indirectly due to lower gas demand to help reduce gas prices

You say not to cancel direct debits, but at the point where the bill is £3400 on DD or £3600 by bill it’s not going to make a difference, if someone cannot afford £3400 they cannot afford £3600 BUT cancelling that direct debit will send a message and is the only thing the utility companies and the government are going to take notice of, then suffer the £4 more a week difference. Also prepayment meter users should be on the lowest per unit and standing charge tariff of the lot, since we pay for the electric and gas BEFORE we use it, not like DD and Bill customers who pay in arrears. I am a prepayment meter user and managed to get to now by preloading my meter back in March with £350 of electric (£250 on meter, £100 on the key), I was extremely lucky to be in that position, many are not, but If it goes up as high in January as they say, I will end up paying more for electric and gas than I do for rent. I work in education and earn barely over £11k a year, at some point all the teaching assistants are going to leave and go to stack shelves at Tesco as the pay and benefits are much better, who is going to educate peoples kids then? I am going to build a solar heater, even paying £40 for the glass and wood is going to save me money this winter. My wife has got a job in the school too so we won’t have a have the heating on during the day now either, but I still bet it’s going to cost us a fortune just to have it on for an hour or two in the evening. It is all very sinister.
I only started regularly listening to you about 3 years ago and I'm so glad I did. Because of your advice I'm still just clinging on to a cheap fix, so let me say thank you for that. I live alone and am disabled, so absolutely dreading what the price will be when my fix ends in May 😟
I switched to a new supplier about 30 years ago, I bought a wood burning cooker and have not looked back. Recently I have seen houses with chimneys being lined and wood stoves fitted. If this is done well then all is fine but i fully expect people to start fitting their own DIY wood fires and cooking stoves which if one poorly will cause fires. Cheers
@@billyandrew Their prices only increased by 5% because EDF Energy is owned by Électricité de France, itself 85% owned by the French government, and we, their UK customers, are subsidising their bloody bills. Plus, dont forget, Eon is owned by German company Eon SE. So, that's the future of the energy supply and prices in the UK well and truly f*ck ed.
The fact that I have to pay £28.53pm at the moment just in standard charges, is disgusting! - Just another Tax... Yet this is going up in October. How do they expect people like myself who is a carer for my disabled partner, and with children. Where do they expect us to get this extra money from? My bill has already quadrupled in price from this time last year, which I can't afford now. Let alone come October...
The irony of having to turn to the Government for help and solutions when it's the failings of Government that's responsible for this mess in the first place.
This country will be brought to it's knees in about 9 months time, if by that time the peasants don't revolt in a all-out WAR, the future will be bleak as Hell
Some might say that it's all part of the WEF agenda to undermine and destabilise economic independence and push people into state dependence & control.
And then what? We import almost all of our energy. So no matter who owns the utility companies we have to buy most of our energy on the World market. Our best move would be to charge the government ministers and head Civil Servants with criminal negligence and imprison them to discourage other idiots from pointless and very dangerous identity politics.
All I can say is thank you Mr Lewis and team.We need people like yourself to keep people informed and advised on how to get through these challenging times. Thanks
@@benjaminsavage4204 We've also had decades to switch from fossil fuels but nobody put in enough capital in good time to make that an affordable reality either.
@@SevenEllen No, you don't understand the issue. Any of it. We need MORE CO2 in the air, it's a total scam when they say it's causing global warming, it doesn't.
That's the thing that drives me nuts. For the last 2 months my gas was £9-60 & £10. The standing charge is £10pm. The electricity standing charge is around £18pm. My bill is £65 this month as I'm barely using any power at all. I dread to think what this will do to millions of people who just can't afford all these price hikes. Winter will take it's toll.
well said there martin you have and have allways had the peoples trust and you show time and time again how much you care i am sending you my very best wishes on behalf of them with no voice to fight yours avon leicestershire 2022
Martin you’re a gem 💎 if we had 400 MPs like you Britain would be Great again. You genuinely care about people. Not like most other millionaires who do philanthropy to raise there profile or feel good. Keep up the great work and please don’t shoulder too much of the burden mentally. You’re doing far more than most to help the poor during this crisis. Thank you and your team for all your efforts. 🙏
These are my top tips if on a budget. 1. Wear extra layers inside the house. 2. Try and hang out in a few rooms in the house. 3. Try and find any drafts and seal both internally and externally if possible. 4. Double or tripple glaze your glass with clingfilm. 5. Look to use existing wood burner or fireplaces if possible, wood is farily reasonable and can be often sourced for cheap.
Thank you Martin for your advice, but all the phone lines are jammed, preventing a great many from talking to someone. This is likely to continue for some time. You are a well respected, well loved guy who wears his heart on his sleeve for millions of us in dire need. Ignore those who criticise, for they know nothing. Stay safe and take care. Best wishes always, Wendi UK 🌻
Dear Martin, thank you so much for the tireless efforts you are making fighting for this crisis. All of the interviews and repeating the same message in the media circus for months on end must be exhausting and soul destroying. You can clearly see in your eyes that you're carrying the pain of the nation. It is heart breaking to see you do that for us, but most sincerely it appreciated that you are. You have my deepest gratitude and respect for immerse effort you are making on our behalf.
So we have a Government full of MPs who had access to the best education the world has to offer, a Shortage of Housing, a Shortage of Water, a Shortage of Food, a Shortage of Dentists, a Shortage of Carers, a Shortage of Doctors, Nurses, Ambulances,, 6 million waiting list on the NHS, now we have a shortage of Gas and Electricity. I left school at age of 13 and can see what they are up to. 90% of the population depend on the above but not those in the 10% which all these Tory MPs and Government are part of, Labour is no better. Ban Political parties that's what I would do.
I turned my heating off at the end of May and it is staying off, have cancelled my DD since my energy provider has on more than 3 occasions helped themselves to a double payment and are likely to do this again without permission/warning which would be catastrophic after 1st October, (it took several weeks + for them to refund these thefts), I'm going to deny these thieves every single godamn penny I can. I still have a huge stock of candles, a camping stove and a wind up radio!
Not forgetting the trusty electric over blanket, cheaper than putting the heating on, bought me two 2kw convector heaters to take the chill off the room, Good Luck Everyone !
Martin, here's a question that many will probably be considering now - would we be better off emigrating from the UK, and if so where would you recommend? Additionally, what are your thoughts on the Government's attack on people who now live full time in vans, given so many are likely to be forced into this lifestyle?
