Thank you for the honest reviews. Unlike other reviewers who listen with their wallet and praise a piece of equipment and always find no fault or weaknesses.
I appreciate the comment! I’m just trying stuff out for a while so I don’t have any real attachment to the products, so I can shoot people my honest feedback. It’s been fun! Thank you for stopping by, my friend!
They are definitely more dependent on power and proper positioning, than most traditional speakers. But you’re correct, they sure do reward you once you get them properly setup. I’m always going to be a ML fan, for as long as they are around. Cheers, my friend!
I remember checking those out back in the day. They were out of my price range at the time. I wound up getting Paradigm Monitor 11's. Still use them every day.
I’ve heard so many good things about Paradigm speakers but I haven’t had good success at grabbing them on the second hand. I’m always keeping my eyes peeled for Paradigm though.. I’ve heard so many good things about the Monitor 11’s, I’m glad they are still rocking!
Yup yup I heard some martin logans in the magnolia section a few years ago and was absolutely blown away. They were being powered by a Mcintosh 275. I have a video on my channel.
These just happened to fall o to my plate, so to speak, since the guy that bought the Velodyne has them lying around. Be sure to keep searches open, on OfferUp, CL, FB Marketplace etc. That way, you are notified when certain brands pop up. If you are in NY, I’d imagine the competition is pretty stiff so I’d imagine you’d have to act quick. I don’t do anything special, which is why I felt this type of channel might help some folks out there. Thanks again!
OfferUp is one of my favorite resources. Great deals and easy communication, plus you don’t have to hand out your phone number like you usually e d up doing with Craigslist transactions. Happy new year, my friend!
I use my 2-channel setup to play music, when I snag a pair of speakers. If I find home theater speaker packages, 3+ speakers, I test them out in my home theater setup. My plan is to document subwoofers, home theater equipment and 2 channel gear separately. When I’m here working, 90% of the time, I’m listening to music. When works finished, I then switch over to home theater and video games:) Thanks for stopping by and for taking the time to comment, my friend!
Free!? Well done! It isn’t just your basic power cable so you will need to contact Martin Logan’s customer service to order a pair. They are usually pretty quick to reply via email M - F. Great sounding speakers so definitely worth ordering a pair of power cables for them.
I purchased Martin Logan ESL X to replace my klipsch r8000f. I ended up keeping the klipsch r8000f and placing the Martin Logan ESL X in the kitchen so my wife can use it. I am still looking for traditional speakers.
That probably surprises some here but not me. The R8000F are pretty awesome speakers and they no doubt have more bass than the ESL. I’m a big Martin Logan fan and I loved the ESL that I used to own but totally different sound signatures. Both are great speakers though, you have excellent taste my friend!
Hopefully, I’ll be able to track down some more Martin Logan models to review. I am just at the mercy of my local 2nd hand market, but that’s part of the fun. Thanks for stopping by and for taking the time to comment!
I’ve only owned one pair of very old Magnapans and that was a long time ago, so it’s a little hard to say at this point. I remember the Magnepans having a more “wall of sound”, vs these ML’s but I wouldn’t be able to accurately compare them at this point, when it comes to sound characteristics. With that said, I remember both being very detailed and both requiring subwoofers. Probably not much help but that’s all I’ve got:/ Thanks again, my friend!
Nice Review. Like you, I've owned many different ML Speakers. I've always loved the mid and upper range of their panels, even in the cheaper / lower-end speakers. My only real knock on the MLs, and this is especially true for this set, is that placement is so critical to sound with them. Which subwoofer would you pair with them, and where would you cross it over?
Placement can definitely be an issue for many, especially those of us with smaller rooms. These speakers have a frequency response down to 42 hz so I would likely cross them over around the 60 - 80 hz range, when using a subwoofer. Now which subwoofer, that really depends on budget and size of the room. I would be inclined to pair them to a pair of sealed 12” subs in your average living room. Something like SVS SB2000’s or a nice pair of Velodyne subs should foot the bill. I will be reviewing more subs and hopefully some more Martin Logan speakers in the very near future. Just need some more deals to pop up:)
Great speakers..I use flash light to set .. But very power hungry & Traded in bought "Goldenear Triton 2s"..Easier to drive 150.watt Nad integrated amp works great....
I am with you here! The ML weren’t ideally set up but the truth is, many of us just don’t have ideal rooms so this is my real-world experience with these two awesome speakers. I would be happy either way but the Klipsch are the clear winners in my room. Is this a good way to show off speakers? I’m open to suggestions, if you think there’s a better way to show you the sound characteristics of different speakers. Thank you for taking the time to comment, my friend!
I sold my used ML Aerius 1 because they always sounded muted or leaned too far back compared to a classic box speaker. Soundtaging on Cymbals was their strong point. Otherwise, I would never pay retail for ESL speakers.
It seems like the microphone is to low for the panels. I heard the source years ago from a low seated position and I walked away disappointed. After hearing them seated at the right height the sound lost that dullness you can hear in the video. How old are the panels?
That’s a part of the problem with my channel. Listening to speakers from my recordings, just doesn’t really do quality speakers like these, any justice. I had the microphone about 3.5 feet off the ground for this video. Another issue here is that I don’t have enough room to properly set them up, width wise and depth. I bought these uses so I’m exactly sure how old the panels were. They really did sound beautiful though, even with my limited listening environment. Thanks for stopping by, my friend!
Definitely not optimized in my room. I did run them in my HT , where they were spaced about 9’ apart and pulled away from the wall more. They definitely sounded better with room to breathe.
I am always on the lookout for Krell gear but it’s usually out of my budget, when it rarely pops up. I’ve never owned any Krell products but I keep hearing very good things. Thanks for taking the time to comment!
I wouldn’t call them fragile but they can get damaged. The electrostatic panels have a metal grill protecting them but I have seen a few panels with holes punched in them, from little ones poking pencils through the grills. Kids can damage traditional speakers also, especially the woofers and the tweeters, when they press in the domes or dust caps. If you leave the grills on, this greatly reduces the risk.
Yeah, the ML electronics definitely love their power. Nice choice on those Triton 2s! I love GoldenEar speakers. I’ve owned a few models, along with a couple subs and I’ve always been impressed with them. Never had the opportunity to own the larger, powered towers like you though. Again, excellent choice!
The Martin Logans are incorrectly positioned resulting in the 'dead' sound...pardon, but the comparison is not valid....The MLs are picky speakers that need space and proper positioning, but given that, they shine. In this situation, they are set up to fail.
I had them set up in my other system, with better spacing. You are correct, this isn’t their ideal setup but unfortunately, it’s all the room I have to show them playing. Eventually, I’ll be moving into a bigger place and will be able to test speakers better. These videos are more of an overview than in-depth review. Let’s face it, you aren’t really hearing the speakers, watching RU-vid on whatever speakers you are listening. You should really go listen to speakers in person, obviously. Thanks for stopping by!
Tristram Marlowe Thank you for the support! I need to make improvements to the channel and the videos but that’s definitely on the horizon. I hope you are having a great weekend!
The good news is that most speakers have very few issues, if they are non-powered or plug-in style speakers, like these electrostatics. When a speaker requires to be plugged in, it’s just more things that could potentially go wrong. I usually want to hear any speakers before I buy them but that isn’t always an option so I usually just roll the dice, which has worked out for me mostly. I have purchased speakers with blown tweeters, so there’s some risk but due to how simple non-powered speakers are in design, most of the time there’s no issues. Subwoofers on the other hand.. I really try to listen to them as I’ve been burnt in the past. If you can’t listen to it first, feel the seller out. I’ve found most folks are stand-up people in this hobby but that’s clearly a generalization. Always try to listen, whenever possible:)
Hey, thanks! More of an overview really but I had a blast testing these babies out. I also sold them to a local fellow audio guy, who loves them. Win, win:) Thanks for stopping by!
He didn't buy that seperate. It comes with the two speakers. Very cool if you ask me and since placement is so critical, it's very convenient when you go to toe them in.
Well that’s a pretty good price but only if the replacement amp is still available. Luckily, I have dealt with ML customer service a few times. They are usually quick to respond and it seems that they keep a fair amount of spare parts around, for when situations like this arise. I would email ML ASAP and see if they have any amplifiers available and if they do, find how much it would be shipped to you. You will then need to weigh if it’s going to be worth the total investment and the time. They are great sounding speakers, if you can get them up and running. They seem to sell around me for $800 - $1,000 so you might have to offer the seller a little less, for it all to make sense. Let me know what you decide to do. I’m sure this info will be helpful to someone out there. Thanks for reaching out!
i wonder how you find these deals. In eastern europe this 2400$ speaker that is 13 years old would be sold used for probably 2000 $. No less then 1900.Can't get anything used here. No point in doing so =/ and i write this comment after watching at least 8 other videos of yours.
Every market is a little different. Luckily, I am surrounded by a large Technology industry and it seems those folks like home audio, so the 2nd hand market has a steady stream of quality gear. You have to be quick around these parts though, as stuff sells very quickly. Are the brands made more local to you, less expensive? That seems to make a difference in my market. Brands like Bowers & Wilkins are pretty expensive but since Aperion Audio is made down the road from me, they can be had pretty cheap. Also, make sure you save searches on the 2nd hand apps, so you are notified when brands you like get listed. Good luck with your search, my friend!
I really love the visuals and especially the audio of that movie! It’s one of my main go-to movies when testing out home theater speakers and subwoofers. Did you hear Disney is coming out with TRON III? I just hope they include Daft Punk in the soundtrack again! Thanks for stopping by, my friend!
Average Guy Hi-Fi yes the soundtrack is amazing. I’d heard talks of there being a TRON Legacy sequel but I hadn’t heard many details. I’m excited. Hopefully this one will be in 4K and feature Daft Punk. Tron legacy shines on an oled especially when the movie goes into IMAX mode. I have a LG b6 and it’s still running strong. Enjoying the content. 🍻
Yes, these are long gone. A really nice local guy bought them off me, right after I sold them. I wish you luck on your search, trying to find another pair. They are fantastic speakers!
Definitely more laid back. I kept the volume at exactly the same level, when I swapped them out, which emphasized the Klipsch efficiency advantage. I was considering replacing the Klipsch with these ML’s but I just like the dynamics the Klipsch offer. Both are great speakers, I just prefer the Klipsch:) Thanks again for the support!
@@blazermdx ML's are pretty famous for being: 1) Very picky about placement, and 2) Picky about amplifiers. They remain my favorite overall brand of speakers, but they certainly can be fussy. The ideal amp to drive them is super-expensive (the MC 275); they do seem to love tube-amps and other amps than can drive 2 and 4 ohm loads...
@@asdfkljhqweroiuyzxcv I have used a Kenwood with 150wpc. It sounds like a fire breathing dragon. You can not turn it above 4. I hooked up a 90wpc Sony, and it clips out immediately. :(
It’s Daft Punk on their Random Memories album. And you nailed it, the name of the song is Game of Love. I don’t own very many CD’s but this one is one of my favorites for testing out speakers. Highly recommended! Thanks for stopping by, my friend!
Pretty good price, that’s for sure! The guy that I bought them from got a great deal on them and he was willing to pass that deal on to me. The deals are out there but it seems everything is selling much quicker these days, so you have to jump when you see the ad. These sold about 30 minutes after the video went live. Pretty crazy!
I think my room was holding the Martin Logan speakers back, since my place is so small. I think in a larger room with better spacing, I think it would be closer. They are both great sounding speakers but I also prefer the Klipsch 600M’s Thank you for your input, I truly appreciate it!
