In the annual special event On Cinema, New York Film Festival Director Kent Jones sits down with world-renowned filmmakers for in-depth talks about films from other directors that have influenced them, their discussion illustrated with film clips. In the first of two On Cinema events that the festival is pleased to present this year, Jones talked with Martin Scorsese, known as much for his work as a film historian as for his unparalleled, decades-spanning cinematic career.
Check out a list below of the films discussed:
0:00 - Bait (Hugo Haas)
7:19 - Strange Fascination (Hugo Haas)
16:43 - Hereditary (Ari Aster)
25:14 - Archipelago (Joanna Hogg)
57th New York Film Festival is presented by Film at Lincoln Center from Friday, September 27 - Sunday, October 13. See ticket info, the schedule, and more: filmlinc.org/nyff
The Irishman is a richly textured epic of American crime, a dense, complex story told with astonishing fluidity. Based on Charles Brandt’s nonfiction book I Heard You Paint Houses, it is a film about friendship and loyalty between men who commit unspeakable acts and turn on a dime against each other, and the possibility of redemption in a world where it seems as distant as the moon. The roster of talent behind and in front of the camera is astonishing, and at the core of The Irishman are four great artists collectively hitting a new peak: Joe Pesci as Pennsylvania mob boss Russell Bufalino, Al Pacino as Teamsters president Jimmy Hoffa, and Robert De Niro as their right-hand man, Frank Sheeran, each working in the closest harmony imaginable with the film’s incomparable creator, Martin Scorsese. A Netflix release. Presented by Campari.
A centerpiece of New York culture since 1963, the New York Film Festival will introduce the most essential new cinematic works from around the world to U.S. audiences in its Main Slate. NYFF will also continue to feature a variety of titles in different sections and sidebars, including Spotlight on Documentary, newly rejuvenated classics in Restorations and Revivals, a diverse selection of international and locally made Shorts, the ever-expanding experimental showcase Projections, and the immersive storytelling experiences of the cutting-edge Convergence. Additionally, there will be an exciting lineup of special events, free filmmaker talks and panel discussions, and the latest editions of our annual Industry and Critic Academies.

100% Scorcese is one of my favorite directors. The Irishman is one of the best films in recent times. However, the stuff he is praising is truly horrific and amazing. Aster will have a remarkable career for sure.

I'm glad to see Scorsese's appreciation for Ari Aster and Hereditary. And surprised that he briefly mentions Midsommar also. Though of course not for everyone, they are the rare films in modern times which deserve their hype. Now just need a Scorsese breakdown of The Thing About The Johnsons, lol.

when they are talking about hereditary, they mention the horror elements vs. the family dynamic. I think what makes this film a masterpiece is that the tension comes from the struggle of the family and the horrific scares are actually the release of the that tension. It fucks with your perception about where the fear is actually coming from. Some of the Scare scenes I actually flow right through because the tension was already so high. Great film.

The shock of Charlie dying in the manner in which she did and the vulgar directness of it plus the horrifying realness of the repercussions that play out as an out-of-body fever dream was one of the most gut-churning and visceral experiences I've had in cinema in recent years. Despite the dreary subject matter in both Hereditary and Midsommar there's strangely a whimsicality to it that does not make them sink to overly heavy-handed depths; they are 'fun' warped films. And the camera work on Aster's films are unparalleled in recent times. You can obviously see huge Polanski influence laced throughout.
