Feels like a guilty pleasure but I did love The Wolf of Wall Street. Definitely in stark contrast to this film.

Goodfellas is Scorsese’s masterpiece, but Silence is his Magnum Opus. No film has permeated my thoughts like Silence. It’s been over a year since I saw it, and not a week has gone by where I haven’t thought about it at least once. It is the most thought provoking film I’ve ever seen, and probably the best exploration of faith in cinema history.

Agreed! I'll rewatch it every couple of years, but the first time I saw it in theaters I was by myself at a 10:30pm showing, great experience!

27 years and it was worth the wait. One of Scorsese's most underrated movie, as a Muslim myself I absolutely love this movie from start to finish. A shame that it was nominated only for one Oscar which was Cinematography when it deserves more than that

I definitely resonate with you as well. As a Muslim myself, this film spoke to me on a very spiritual level and over time became my favorite film of Scorsese’s.

As a devout Christian who grew up in a majorly Catholic country (but aware that there are many errs in the Catholic doctrine), the movie made me gain renewed respect for Catholics. Catholics and Protestants may have major disagreements but we still see eye to eye when we're out there in the wilderness (countries like Japan)

It’s a beautiful philosophical meditation that questions imperialism through religious assimilation. I like that cinema to provoke the big discussions without a clear or cut answer because views, perceptions, faith can be malleable or stubborn. It also challenges the audience’s relationship with religion. To me, this should have been Andrew Garfield’s Oscar nomination over Hacksaw Ridge. It was entertaining and he’s good in it, but Silence was a role that showed depth and range that the other only was surface level.

Exactly! Most religious films are just straight up propaganda with no actual artistic value. Few actually seek to ask questions and not just give some religious colloquialism as an answer.

I went to the movie on a weekday alone, I didn't read much about it on purpose. Almost no one watching. Undoubtedly one of the movies that surprised me the most and touched me, the slow pace, silence. And only then did I realize the performances, direction. I didn't see any of that at the moment. I was there stunned in silence. I never understood the lack of Oscars for the director and actors.

I love this film, it's one of my favorites, sometimes I even blame myself, for only having seen it once, the prison scene I always remember how the camera moves so subtly while everything is happening. I have mixed feelings about this film being so obscure to people and even though it's by Scorsese many people have no idea what he made, as a comment said above this is his Magnum opus and I agree 100%, this film has a type of "magic", something about him that is special, I don't know how to put it into words, all I can do is point it out to everyone and hope that one day he gets the looks he deserves.

This film made me absolutely cringe so hard everytime they said their own names. They're supposed to be Portuguese, yet they can't even say their own names properly. It's not even remotely close to being portuguese. The film itself is alright, it's far from being a masterpiece imo, but I just couldn't distance myself from that horrendous portuguese. I'd love it Scorcese actually casted portuguese actors instead. It was such a lost opportunity, but I know how Hollywood works... gotta cast the A-listers.

Fair point! I've been to Portugal but wouldn't be able to tell the issues with the accents, probably why I had a different experience watching it haha. It's always fascinating the different things that change the experience from person to person for a film

@@FrameVoyager It's a great film, don't get me wrong. It just rubs me the wrong way everytime I hear them calling out their names. I can't remember if they actually speak in Portuguese at any given time, but I remember the Japanese actors actually sounded like they were Japanese man talking Portuguese (which they were, so makes sense).

As a Brazilian, Now that you said, I remembered to be bothered on the movie opening, when they received their mission. But it went away very quickly, that silence, the lack of dialogue. Didn’t make any difference to me. I completely forgot 15 minutes in the movie. One hour after, I felt hopeless sharing the burden with them. If I rationalize now saying. If I didn't speak Portuguese, would I like the performance, direction? The answer is yes.

I would have they rather just used their normal accents or modifies them slightly to fit the character. It was done a few times to great effect decades ago, most notably in Amadeus and The Duellists, but Hollywood is doing this more often now and it's not distracting, whereas people trying to effect horrendous foreign accents IS. And it's inaccurate. Nobody 'sounds' foreign to each other, and regional English accents are the equivalent of regional accents in other languages. The Death of Stalin and Chernobyl pulled this off really well.
