The Irishman is not a masterpiece when you consider this man has made casino, goodfellas, taxi driver, cape fear, in my opinion the Irishman doesn’t come close
Did you actually listen to the interview? He says that The Joker in this context ISN'T a comic book character and he fails to see how it could [successfully] become one because it is an abstraction and a character study.
People need to stop crying about this guys opinion. What he’s saying is 100% true. Yes, Marvel movies are cinema but they more so fit into the amusement park category. He isnt saying that’s necessarily bad either. Just compare Taxi Driver to Doctor Strange or something like that, 2 very different films, one allows you to shut your brain off for 2 hours, the other one challenges you for 2 hours. I think Scorsese’s point is completely fair.
He’s not criticizing Marvel. He’s just concerned that spectacle/entertainment is becoming a main priority for audiences at the expense of all other forms of cinema.
Not even that. He is just worried (correctly so) that "superhero" movies are taking over the cinemas leaving no room for any other sort of art/movies to be shown.
@@MrVoland44 Its not blockbusters or that they become big movies by their own thats the problem. Its the big franshice movies that are all homogeneous/the same on an artistic and creative level.
@@dakapo8985 Yes, I think that when Scorsese talks about "comic book characters" and "superhero movies", what he is really referring to is what I would call "IP milking", which completely dominates the business these days and where superhero movies are both the most successful and most aggressive ones with their unlimited number of movies, series and "phases". Blockbusters also existed in the 80s and 90s, but at least they were for the most part original creations at that time and not lazy attempts to milk existing IPs to the death.
@@senseyy8959 Tarantino is a geek. Also he's considerably younger than the other Hollywood Brat filmmakers and his films are not too serious themselves.
Marvel Movies are formulaic by necessity because they are part of one big cinematic universe, which has to be coherent. Superhero movies, including big budget superhero movies with explosions and fight scenes can still be cinema. Instead of asking Edgar Wright why not ask Christopher Nolan if the Dark Knight Trilogy flexed his creative muscles? You might get a different answer.
"I wanted to make a Marvel movie, but I don't think they really wanted to make an Edgar Wright movie." - Edgar Wright. I mean - I like how your defense is "of course they're cookie cutter, they come off an assembly line" like yeah, that's exactly what's being criticized here, genius.

I always knew this man wasn't down talking the comic genre. He only expressed that it's a different form of art and is not for him. Fair enough. I never understood how triggered people got by taking what he said out of context
I love how everyone continues to misunderstand him too. He's not saying "Superhero movies bad, you're only allowed to enjoy Tarkovsky and Bergman", he's saying it doesn't fit into his well established idea of what cinema is. It's a movie, but it's not cinema as he knows it. He's obviously not invested in it, but it's not like he denies there is some value in it, or that creative people work on it.
@@Solaire_of_Astora13 Relax man, we too are not saying Superhero genre is bad. It's like he said that as he says ‘Amusement Park Movies’ are not true cinema. He never said that Superheroes movie should never exist and so does we.
Video is almost 3 minutes but feels like 1 minute. Scorsese has the talent, to put so much depth and insight into his comments and yet it never feels boring. A master.
He didn’t say that he hates superhero films but he’s right when saying they’re theme parks and he also acknowledges they’re a form of art but a different part, some people twist his statement way too much
@buddhasadvocate7238 scorcese fans probably enjoy the GOOD disney films. Disney hasn't made a film on par with it's good films for decades. Only Disney adults believe the new ones are worth jack. It's all soulless remakes and cashgrabs. Also did you seriously just list the scorcese films about gangsters like those are his only films? seriously, After Hours? raging bull? Last Temptation of Christ? Taxi Driver? Expand your own filmography before you talk that shit
but the thing is, Joker is not really a comic book movie, it stands alone. The name "Joker" is there just to attract capeshit-plebs to watch it, the movie doesn't need the connection to the batman lore to work, and probably the parts about that movie that don't work are the parts with connect it to batman such as the cringey bruce wayne scene that had no meaning whatsoever to the the film as a whole
@@alterego5007 it is a comic book movie. Just not like the ones we are familiar with. Because at the final act, the person you saw on screen wasn't Arthur Fleck. It was Joker. DC has a lot of good characters and stories. They need to make this types of movie.
I light up when I see Martin talk. There's not a single person in the world who is as passionate about anything as he is about cinematography. I wish I had a fraction of his enthusiasm, I don't need anything else - and he's is gifted beyond reason with so much more.
Sometimes you listen to classical music and sometimes you listen to rock and roll. Both are good in their own ways. The same idea can be applied to movies.
Mh... I prefer this comparison for movies: Cinema is like reading litterature, whereas marvel or superhero movies is like reading thriller books, or big book series wich are meant for entertainment. We can acknowledge that litterature isn't the most fun to read, yet it leaves a huge print on you and has a huge influence in the world. Reading Percy jackson is entertaining,... then... next, I'll read another one, then another, then another. Not a big deal. But oh man "la recherche" by Marcel Proust was painful to read but it changed my life, it's just another world. So is cinema. cheers!
Man what would we do without scorsese? I think if it wasn't for him this movie wouldn't existed. Taxi Driver and the King of Comedy were inspirations for this movie.
he’s kind of right, you may disagree but there are a lot of directors out there who want to put their amazing films in theaters but unfortunately many superhero movies (and other franchises) take that away. I love marvel films but there are so much more grounded films that deserve to be watched.
No they aren't. Comic book movies make up maybe 3 percent of all movies in any given year. The VAST majority of movies released are not comic book movies.
@The Abcool he's talking about "number of comic books released compared to other non-comic movies" He wasn't talking about the money . And that's where he's wrong . Sure comic book films release less than non-comic book films but amount of money they make are huge . Not only that but due to this , their marketing are huge as well which results in media showcasing these movies more compared to actual art movies . And so these art movies don't get enough support from audiences .
@@darkseid856 Ahh. But that's not the fault of comic book movies. People are going to like what they like. And many people who go to see comic book movies do think that they are good movies.
@@jpeg204 both explore very similar themes in similar ways and even the director recognized it as a direct influence. If you can't tell how, then I don't know what to tell you...
Man I'm a huge comic book movie fan....but it's Martin Scorsese..he can say whatever he wants. That guy has my respect. I grew up watching his movies. A true legend.
Interviewer: Yeah Scorsese: It's not easy. I know you may think I'm pretty sick or something. You think I'm sick?! I bet you really think I'm sick. You think I'm sick?! *Chuckles*
If you made Taxi Driver you dont gain anything from making The Joker. If he could have told the story in a more creative way, he probably would have done it. But youre talking about a character the whole world knows and had an opinion on and then its just so damn dark. I dont think he wanted to revisit that sort of story especially since every other day we get to see the story on the news "crazy, disturbed, misunderstood, bored person walks into a school, church, mall, store with a weapon and empties it."
I think The Dark Knight is more than just a comic book movie, it’s just good cinema. That film, in my opinion, should be considered among the greatest of all time.
Sounds like a smart person expressing an opinion in a rational way. he isnt condemning the genre, he isnt dismissing its value, he is just explaining his reasoning for his viewpoints. the rest of society should try it sometime.
I grew up on Martins movies and still love them...I also grew up on superheroes and love seeing them on the big screen as an adult...people are entitled to their opinions
Basically he is a old timer who doesn't want cgi, superhumans, godzilla type sh*t he wants normal movies based with society problems, love emotions nothing crazy with the new technology just basic people and interestingly stories, scary like goodfellas and sad like taxi driver ect.I love that style more and I'm rlly sad when he will be gone and it will a huge gap in film making
I don't understand why people got so mad about what he said. Right here he said superhero films are clearly not for me and they just need to make some room for smaller movies in the theaters. It makes complete sense to me.
The fact that Oscar winning directors and Oscar caliber actors want/expressed in being attached the a joker property says a lot about the character of joker.
The thing is that Scorsese’s movies are like novels and big books, while marvel and DC movies are like... well comic books. Both entertaining, just on different ways
@@thepillowhead2453 "Alan Moore books are on a different level dude" They are still comic books, dummy. The name "comic books" has no bearing on its quality. There are good comic books and bad comic books just like everything else.
''Legendary Filmmaker''' I'm CBM lover but respect the legend. he has point he wants Art house movies to also do well. and people have to support those movie as well.
@@gleekthemonkey4570 not really . Look at the number of trash movies made . (mostly from Disney obviously) . and compare it to the number movies that can be actually be considered as real ART .
Some suggestions to points above: Netflix was the only studio willing to back this movie. Also, filmgoers should read up on monopoly power in movie theater chains and the film industry. You can't break through to audiences today unless you are a comic book movie. Theater chains prioritize the opening weekend. Not because we prefer comic books over others, its that most theaters have no [financial] incentive to show them. They make quicker bucks on opening weekend vs let's say an original property in the 80s like Back to the Future which took like 2 months floating in theaters before it took off word of mouth. The studios, in turn, respond to this by making movies that can break through, hit that opening weekend total which is a sign in our culture now of a "good movie." They're bet is on "brand" movies. Do you see Marty's beef here? Weird original daring movies dont stand a chance, not like the 70s were studios gave more leeway to the new generation of filmmakers to experiment and fill theaters. It wasnt all great but looking back now it was a gold rush of classic cinema. Audiences today dont have those options. We are shaped to like what's there, because the gatekeepers decide what's there, and the gatekeepers now are not film buffs or snobs like Scorcese but CEOs in corporate monopolies.
That’s all Pirates was, but it also had a first entry that still stands as one of my favorite adventure films of all time. But yeah, Jungle Cruise doesn’t have Johnny Depp, Orlando Bloom, Kiera Knightly, Or Geoffrey Rush, and The Rock doesn’t exactly bring that acting caliber. Emily Blunt definitely has that kind of talent, but from the trailer, Jungle Cruise doesn’t seem to be featuring it.
The film makers need the theatres. Very well said, he don't want the theatres to be annexed by the big studios so they just become theme park rides. People misunderstood everything he said about this topic.
