'Don't Know' aside , this is the best cover of the song I've ever heard. Clean and clear, just like the original.

Wow, it was quite interesting to come here and see this clip and also interesting to see so many people think that this is an original for Stevens. It's not. John Paul Young is an Australian singer, who worked with Australian songwriters George Young (brother of ACDC guitarist Angus Young) and Harry Vanda. Both Vanda and Young were former member of the band The Easybeats who had the hit "Friday On My Mind". Vanda and Young wrote "Love Is In The Air" for John Paul Young's 1978 album of the same name, and this song was the first single to be released. They worked extensively with Young all through the 70's, writing his hits "Yesterday's Hero" (covered but not stolen by the Bay City Rollers), "I Hate The Music", "The Love Game", " I Wanna Do It With You" and "Where The Action Is". Somehow, Martin Stevens had obtained a record company demo disc of John Paul Young's version and decided to try and steal the show. I very seriously doubt John Paul Young sent it to him as he claims in an interview here www.journaldemontreal.com/2017/04/26/quatre-decennies-de-disco. If you are going to release a song, why would you send it to someone so they could release it ? The article also has this whopping load of rubbish : "40 years ago, the disco smash hit Love Is in the Air swept the city, the province, then the entire planet, propelling its Quebec interpreter, Martin Stevens, to the top of the charts. And even after all these years, the singer continues to ride the wave of this success." It might have swept the planet, but it was for JPY, not Stevens which they fail to mention but make you assume. This is where it was a hit for John Paul Young. #3 Australia, #3 Australia, #3 Belgium, #5 Ireland, #9 Netherlands, #8 New Zealand, #2 in Norway, #2 South Africa, #2 Sweden, #5 Switzerland, #5 UK, #7 US Billboard Hot 100, #1 US Adult Contemporary, #3 in West Germany. So what about Stevens ? His version went to $19 in Canada. Stevens quickly made a version of it himself after getting hold of the demo and released it as fast as he could, a full 2 months before JPY's version was released. Basically stealing someones song and quickly releasing it doesn't make it the original and Young's version a cover.........the song was written for Young, which is why his album had the same name as the song. Young's version was a worldwide hit, except for Canada where it had to compete against Stevens version which had an 8 week head start against it. Even with the 8 weeks against him, Young still did well to get his version to #26 against Stevens #19. Many Canadians were confused and thought it was just one person, though to me its fairly obvious it's not. I was just posting the song on my channel and came across this information which I hadn't heard before, so decided to seek out this version to see what it actually sounds like. I may be biased, but I think Stevens version is pretty average against JPY's version. To me, it sounds like Stevens is not a native English speaker ? Anyway, here is John Paul Young's version and I hope that clears up exactly how their came to be 2 different versions. I didn't know that Mr. Martin Stevens had passed away on July 5th, 2023. May he rest in peace! Since I was born in 1975 and I am 49 years old, I grew up listening to this wonderful music. "Love is in the air" has been performed by 3 artists: 1. John Paul Young (real singer); 2. Martin Stevens (first cover); and 3. Harrison Craig (second cover). If someone asked me about the best cover, there wouldn't be a specific winner, because the men I mentioned before are excellent. All of them showed passion and their own style while singing the song. Congrats, John Paul, Martin and Harrison! 😊
