Pierce is one of those players to whom ranking never meant anything ... she could beat anyone she wanted to .... also with the career spanned with injuries she always made a come back being low ranked player
Great match from Mary here: I was gripped. Some really great tennis. The standard of women's tennis has gone down. Look at all the amazing angles, power, court coverage, anticipation and sheer skill on display. Mary did very well to claw it back because Hingis was playing so well and serving great. Some said Mary was just a power player but look how many times she came to the net. I think if she could have maintained this standard and variety in her game she would have won many more Grand Slams: Pierce was unbeatable playing like this: she had everything.
When Mary was firing on all cylinders there was no better player and no better forehand. Seeing her obliterate Graff in the French Open semi-finals in 1994, 6--2, 6--2, was an outrageous display of skill, tecnique, power and class.
Well I just subbed but see you have not posted for a while. I am glad to find a site with such a rich history of the WTA "golden era". Here's hoping you are able to post again soon!
Wow, thanks for the upload, Cindy! Martina had 2 game points to go up a set and 4-0, but Mary dug deep to take that game and of course eventually the match. When Mary was set and the ball was in her strike zone, I think she could hit about as hard as any man. I also noticed that Martina's serve seemed better at this point/early in her career. Then, it was as if she started taking something off it to get a higher percentage of 1st serves in. Good for Mary, though, for not giving up and pulling this one out of the fire!
