Marvel Champions | Rahdo's Final Thoughts 

I don't know why I'm watching this, I have a subscription for every pack that comes out for this game and I spent the morning designing card dividers for the box.

Cap’s shield throw has a cost of X. It does 4 damage to X enemies and then bounces the shield back into your hand. They just revealed the Thor deck and it looks so cool. I’m definitely down the rabbit hole.

Glad to hear you like this game so much. I remember it being one of your top games of the month a while back, which did surprised me considering your previous statements about LCGs. I think one of the biggest selling points about going down the rabbit hole on this one are the pre-constructed decks for the game. You really don't have to deck build if you don't want to, but if you do deck build each character has so many different ways to customize it's really crazy. Truly a fantastic game, this will probably be my favorite game of all time once the game gets more content.

I'm already hungering for more content from this game. The gameplay is great though! Definitely easier to access than AH:LCG. Planning on keeping both though.

Amazing game. In the running for the Game of the Year

I think I need to get a few more games in. I've played three times and I'm an MCU fan but I found the game to be okay. I can see the LOTR roots and the thematic cards, etc, but I feel I've seen theme come through stronger with other games (like Villainous). However, I may be missing something so I'll give it a few more tries. I do like the solo/co-op aspect for sure.

You didnt mention the Nemesis of each character :) . What do you think about them? I think they are very thematic.

How are the pre-constructed decks? Would you need to buy two core sets to make a decent deck?

I notice he mentioned that Jen said if they were normal, they'd jump down that Champions LCG rabbit hole. That makes me think they're not going beyond this core.

One of these rare games that managed to go from a 5 to a 10 in a matter of 5 play throughs. I am no comcis fan and I hate most movies but this game has a tremendous punch in game play. For once I agree with Rahdo. A rare occasion indeed.

damn. what should I do with legendary and all expansions that I got over the years? :(

I really hope they make Rocket Raccoon as a playable hero. I'm not sure how they would handle an alter-ego for him though. That being said, I really like this game.

I had zero interest on even playing the game much less on buying it (IPs are usually bad, and generally only a cash grab) , but your review has definitely changed my perspective, I'll try to at least play it, perhaps it will even be released in Brazil, MCU being the juggernaut it is. ;)

@rahdo how does this compare to Aeon's End, is there any reason to have both (always looking for an opportunity to cull my collection)

I picked this up in April after my brother sent of me on it. It is now Mid August (2023), and I own everything for this game. It is my most played true solo game, and my favorite LCG. It’s my number 1 game of all time currently. I really hope they don’t make DC Champions. My poor wallet…

This vs LotR or Arkham - what do you prefer rahdo?

Just a point of fact, in Marvel vs Capcom video games, even though the life bars are visually represented to look the same length, they actually aren't. For example, Jean Grey/Phoenix has considerably less health than She-Hulk.

I think they kept this game simpler and put all that crazy heroclix-esque rules jumble into the miniatures game.

And another game that i'm gonna buy because of your reveiew, that's why i hate to watch them :P Yet i still coming back :D

I love the MCU. But I also love LOTR but I ended up HATING (YES HATING) FFG's LOTR LCG. Those fiddly rules. That massive FAQ. Those billion keywords. That slag heap of waste cards that pile up after multiple expansions. Maybe this will be good with the core and one or two expansions but will it implode from FFG's greed? Unfortunately, that is their track record.

Does this mean Tapestry is out of the running for best game of the year? :)

Wow been waiting for this one - thanks heaps Rahdo! I found the rule book to be poorly structured .We did so many things wrong - drawing encounter cards and getting confused with playing reveal effects on boosts for scheme and attack, how many schemes the villain gets - did you know that when you pay using resources it doesn't float over so if you have 4 resources and pay for something costing three the extra one is gone and cannot be used to pay for another card? And allies are very overpowered, 'oh Ultron attacks for 15? I'll just block with Nick Fury'. With the allies aspect you can chump block all day. There is a whole Facebook community and most of the posts are rules clarification. But the biggest issue with the game is that I can easily see people playing the same deck long term. For example Justice is easily the best aspect in the game, you pretty much have to play justice at higher difficulties solo if you want to stand a chance otherwise the villain will scheme to win very quickly. So it will be a game where people will just buy a new hero and add it to their invincible deck that they have made from reading the deck lists online. Marvel Legendary, a deck builder is so much better because it challenges you to construct a deck with what's in front of you so you play a different game each time (we use a randomizer for heroes and villains). I've played a number of games of Champions already and I've only got Ultron expert level to complete and it feels like the same thing over and over again.

Can't agree more with the balance commentary. I hate superhero video games that flatten the power levels of all of the characters for "game play" reasons. Daredevil is not in the same power class as Thor. The problem is that designers need to focus on the characters, as a whole, not just the powers, and this game does that by building in obligations, basing powers around signature mechanics, and using alter-egos.

I'm hoping I'll love it. Only played once so far as a 3-player game and it felt ever so slow - Took us 90+ minutes and we hadn't even got halfway through Rhino's health. But I mostly plan to play a bunch 2-player with a friend so expect it'll speed up comfortably ^^. Just have to resist playing it 4-player ever!

We played this game twice and lost the two games... This game is so difficult and we think this game is as difficult as Crossfire....

How "radically different" is radically different? I don't see how these characters (for now) feel so different, especially compared to Gloomhaven or Sentinels?

My only complaint against the game is that there is no campaign or really any strong narrative at all.

Personally, I scoff at Black Angel, though I have only played it once but felt too "sabotaged" by the other players to enjoy it. (Though I had the option to rush the end of the game, which is a plus when you feel you have no chance to win.) This is my LCG of choice, because for once FFG decided that you would have a complete game just from one base set, not two or three. Plus the theme, which you point out comes through.

Wanna get beat to pulp? Tell a Marvel fanboy that you're not interested in this game. Seriously, they take it really personally.

I'm one of those who doesn't particularly care about the MCU. The game looks good but the theme does nothing for me.

I'm bored with Marvel. That's why I like Sentinels of the Multiverse.
