It took 3 separate phases of movies to even get to Endgame. IIRC, Phase 1 was pretty mid like Phase 4 is, because everything has to be set up and established first. Can't say whether or not the Disney+ shows are detrimental to the overall story. Probably. Not just in oversaturation but in inadvertently creating a multiverse of random content drops where you don't even *have* to see everything that releases to keep up
@mistert5620
@mistert5620 2 года назад
Simply put, it’s because of over-saturation. We went from 2 or 3 MCU movies a year to 4 movies and 4 TV shows just last year, all of which were required viewing. This year so far has also seen a similar amount of content. People are getting burnt out on the MCU, I pretty much stopped keeping up with the MCU after Endgame and I’m sure many others felt the same way.

It's not over-saturation, otherwise, Endgame would not have made as much having come out right after Ant-man and Captain Marvel. We all keep saying we're bored, but we're not. The Batman did amazing after a lack of returns from DC. There is no pattern, only guesses. And the likely best guess is that Disney may be trying to connect all of these shows and movies together, but they haven't done that yet so many audiences won't have the same impulsion as the Star Wars property to see it all.

Nothing lasts forever. The problem is with the inclusion of Disney+, Marvel now is oversaturated with content with some movies now requiring "homework." Movies should NEVER EVER require homework. In addition, (this has been a long on-going problem with Marvel) is how they handle Comedy which often cuts into/interrupts/distract serious moments. This happens time and time again.

I don’t consume a lot of other media, so the pace of The MCU and disney plus doesn’t bother me. When they made Wanda the villain of Multiverse of Madness, to me it seemed like it "walked back" the redemption arc of WandaVision... it's like, she learned a lesson at the end of that show, and she genuinely felt bad about manipulating a whole town full of people. But no.. just a villain now. I saw the previews for the Multiverse of Madness.... and I thought she'd be *helping* Dr Strange rebuild the collapsing multiverse that got broken at the end of Spider Man: No Way Home. I thought that's what phase 4 was going to be.. a shake up of the Marvel Universe by introducing "alternate" versions of people in every movie-- I thought it was going to tie into those alternate timelines setup by the damn Loki show. It's like the writers have changed their minds about what Phase 4 was gonna be about.

Wanda tortured people (again) and was let off with a pat on the head (again) and this time took a big evil book to study how to get more power. The movie answers a lot of peoples' biggest complaints about how Wanda never faces consequences for her actions just because she has emotional trauma.
@budgiecat9039
@budgiecat9039 2 года назад
There was no redemption arc of Wanda on Wandavision. She just took off before she could be arrested and honestly SWORD and the FBI knew they couldnt contain her anyway. Thats why Monica said that BS line to Wanda which many viewers hated "They'll never understand your sacrifice" lol. Monica said that to de-esculate the situation. There's no way she and the FBI could take on Wanda at that point if she pissed her off so they let her go. Then we see her training with the DARKHOLD book which we already know is an EVIL book. So how is that a redemption arc? She never paid for what she did to that town. And the very last thing we saw was her freaking out when she heard her kids voices, so we knew she was gonna do something no good with that book.

Tell me you never read a comic book without telling me you never read a comic book. Not to mention the Darkhold was already shown on Agents of Sheld. She was trying to learn the Darkhold so she could figure out a way to hop between universes which is bad because that causes incursions. We already seen what can happen in the first Doctor Strange movie if a dimension merges into ours (The Dark Dimension) ,and this was further illustrated in Ms Marvel, No Way Home, Loki, and Multiverse of Madness. Wanda was always the antagonist of her show even if she was the protagonist. She just wasnt your mustache twirling villain because she wasnt sure what was going on herself, but once she lost her fake kids and Vision and got a hold of the book, then she knew. Because at that point she was the Scarlet Witch right at the end of the show. And the Darkhold is NOT a good thing so there is no redemption there.

Yeah I agree. Plus there is the fact that many of these characters were C-listers. Ms. Marvel, Hawkeye, the Eternals, Dr. Strange, Scarlett Witch, She Hulk, Thor, Guardians of the Galaxy... yeah not many people are gonna care about them unless they're tied to the stories of much more popular characters. It's one of the reasons they worked in the pre-Endgame MCU. You had them interwoven with characters that are better known. Now that Iron Man and Cap are gone and Hulk isn't around, all we have is Spider-Man as the A-lister carrying the MCU. I think things will get better when you bring in your A-listers which are the X-Men and Fantastic 4. They have like a bunch of amazing villains too, which will help. Mister Sinister, Magneto, Apocalypse, William Stryker, Sabretooth, Omega Red, Juggernaut, Mystique, Dr. Doom, Galactus, Super Skrull, Namor, Annihilus. This is what's needed to not just reach the heights of the MCU up to Endgame but also surpass that.

@vtaylor21

The multiverse is also hurting them based on some things they are doing. For example, they made a “What If...?” version of Myles Morales being Thor, and Brooklyn being Asgard. That is crossing the line. They are taking a mythology that is connected to a Northern European culture and washing the culture away. This is the same as Whitewashing Egyptian mythology, and people didn't like that.

I think a lot of the problems the MCU has always had are getting worse. Things like storylines being rushed, like Age of Ultron being more of a Weekend of Ultron, not following through on consequences, like Rhodey getting crippled and everyone kind of just ignores it, and the general habit of a lot of movies having generic action and falling back on big dumb CGI battle. It's just much more noticeable now, especially with them trying to do more different types of stories but then continuing to have those same weaknesses. Black Widow is a good example. It had an interesting start with BW's fake family infiltrating America. It felt like it was going to be more of a spy thriller that focused a lot more on intrigue and espionage. As for Miss Marvel, No one really even cared about her before the show, in the show they did nothing to get people to notice her, until that line about mutations. The fact they had to basically completely change her powers/origin is a testament to how weak of a character she was in the first place.

Being critical is not bashing. The Ms Marvel character has failed in every iteration since they first created her back in the 2000's. As far as the latest Thor and Dr. Strange movies. They both suffered from strange creative choices. The moment they brought Natalie Portman out with that hammer at comic con, I knew this wouldn't work. If you watch the trailers, the movie itself just looks too silly. They just went too far with everything they did in Ragnarok. Way too much comedy and somehow the costumes and sets which were cartoonish in Ragnarok became even more silly looking in Love and Thunder. No we couldn't see it was Thanos. Phase four was centered around the tesseract/arc reactor tech/fury forming the avengers. Then it lead to Loki forming the avengers along with fury as their single threat. Literally Thanos showed up at the very end and wasn't hinted before that. So if we take phase 1 as a blueprint then likely Kang in quantumania will be the new Thanos but appear more before the big final Infinity war level fight. This is due to more content allowing him to show up proportionally at the same rate as Thanos did but in total more appearances.

I agree. Phase 4, while not perfect, has been about rebuilding and the after math of Phase 3. Everything in this universe is connected, and Feige did say that this was basically a palette cleanser. We were introduced to Shang Chi, The Eternals, Ms. Marvel, Moon Knight, America Chavez, and Yelena Belova. We also saw the continuation and evolution of characters such as Wanda, Sam and Bucky, and Peter Parker. Phase 4 was always going to be an uphill battle. I'm not a huge fan of the shows however, I think they still need a lot of work on that front. Seeds for Secret Wars are being sowed, and Phase 5 looks to be even bigger. I don't really understand why people including DT are expecting another big bad right away. Thanos wasn't teased until the very end of the first Avengers. As far as the villains in Phase 4 go... I thought that using Wanda as the villain was part of her character's natural growth and arc, she'll be back eventually as her character arc is not complete yet. But it made sense that she was the villain for it, as again, it reinforces this idea that the MCU is one connected universe where everything is connected. Dr. Strange 2 is a good intro/tease into Secret Wars, Moon Knight will eventually lead into The Midnight Suns, Ms. Marvel teased the mutants, and The Eternals even teased Blade. And, my personal favorite, Valentina will most likely be putting together the Thunderbolts. So, bigger things are coming, but we have to appreciate this as the rebuilding phase, not as Endgame two point o

People are expecting Phase 4 to build towards something as though those first few movies were definitely planned to end in Infinity War + Endgame. While a big bad would be fine, I actually like that these are all individualized stories. I think they should make Doctor Doom a recurring villain (you could have him be a villain in a Fantastic Four movie, a Black Panther movie and an Avengers movie) and supporting character (in a Doctor Strange movie and he could have some short appearances in some Fantastic Four movies). They could even give him a solo movie or Disney+ show about his origin story. The next Thanos level villain should be God Emperor Doom from Secret Wars. That's the most powerful version of Doctor Doom that's ever existed. He could be even bigger than Thanos.

Maybe when you push characters no one cares about, but don't do it right, no one will gravitate to them. Yeah Moon Knight is one that worked despite the flaws the show has in the format and deviating from the comics. Shang Chi worked also even if the box office wasn't the best. Ms. Marvel arguably even if there isn't a big standom for her. But other characters that are lodged into stories will have a hard time compared to the big movie entry main characters will have hard time yeah. So far in MCU we don't know who is going to matter in the main stuff. Spider-Man seems to matter, Shang-Chi maybe? It's debatable if Moon Knight will be with the big players or not. Ms. Marvel yeah. Wanda YES but she's not in definitive hero or big villain territory anymore. Hawkeye???? Yeh I guess Doctor Strange is still here. Captain Marvel yeah. Thor maybe?? It doesn't help that the main brand cast isn't as simple or dynamic looking anymore huh. It's hard to get people out of the branding of Iron Man, Thor, Hulk.

My theory is that people are on Marvel overload. We get 6 to 9 different MCU projects in one year and people are getting burned out. Back when the MCU started what made it special was the minimum content and the hype building up to the new content. Now there is no hype because it’s just overload.
@MrBazBake
@MrBazBake 2 года назад
It's not even that complicated. People aren't MCU fans. They're fans of characters in the MCU. Endgame and Infinity War had all of the characters, so they did all of the box office. You lose characters, you lose box office. You can fiddle with and game these numbers all you want with crossovers and cameos, but that's reality. No Way Home wasn't Tom Holland Spider-Man box office, it was *every* Spider-Man box office, including movies that outperformed every Tom Holland Spider-Man movie (inflation-adjusted). You can't assume you get the box office of previous MCU movies. Assume you get the box office of where the previous appearance of your characters released. Guardians box office is Guardians box office, not Ant-Man box office. Thor box office is Thor box office, not Avengers box office. People assume Marvel somehow brainwashed people into accepting a brand, but it has never happened. Months after Infinity War, Ant-Man and The Wasp did 30% of its box office globally. And then, lo and behold, they all came back for Endgame. This is the only way to look at the MCU that makes sense. It's not one big movie, it's a bunch of franchises in the same universe and sometimes people just don't care about your movie.

There’s some issues behind the scenes that I think really affected the output of Phase 4 also. Specifically Covid and the new Disney CEO Bob Chapek. More and more of the creatives are being open about how the pandemic affected the scripts due to changes in production and release dates, which lead to scheduling conflicts with actors and the health protocols affecting how many people could be on set at a time. Some of the changes in release dates meant that movies like Multiverse of Madness and No Way Home (which are top tier MCU for me) had to have major re writes to the script to fit in better chronologically. Also, Daniel Richtman, a fairly reliable insider, reported that Kevin Feige was concerned about Chapek being too involved, which was around the time Love and Thunder was filming (what a coincidence). While he wasn’t in charge during filming and development of every project, he’s been overseeing post production of all of it. Bob Iger was pretty hands off, he still had to sign off on everything, but he let Feige have the creative freedom he needed to make the MCU work. Now he’s got Chapek,who’s only concerned about profits and pleasing the shareholders, ordering that movies be shorter, obviously for more screenings, and is more focused on creating content for Disney+ rather than focusing on the films and theme parks, which is weird because that’s where most of their revenue comes from. And I think it shows because their Disney+ stuff has been stronger than their movies. And look, I’m not saying people don’t have the right to criticize the phase, I think it’s on par with Phase 2 overall, even the weaker installments like Eternals and Thor 4 I enjoy overall, but do admit to their flaws. Knowing all that was going on while this was being made kind of affects my perceptions of it. And again, not saying everyone has to agree with my thinking, it’s some info that I think shows a bigger issue than just “it’s after Endgame”.

It looks decent but it's not the only show out there and it's competing with shows like "The Boys, Young Justice, and Even Moonknight" it needs a better story than an expensive Disney channel teen show. I agree, I am ok with individual bads and heros mostly on their own tracks before it adds up to anything. There’s just too much too often right now and I honestly think less interconnectedness allows people to pick and choose their own adventure instead of feeling like they have to track it all. Agent Carter was a great series and mostly just background for a Captain America character in the greater universe. It was a character building show in the greater scheme of things. It was just lost in it’s time slot at the time of production unfortunately. The good thing about the Marvel shows pre-Disney Plus was they were just good expanded Marvel content (especially the Netflix ones) with their own succinct plot lines. Starting with WandaVision (which I loved minus the ending) the demand for things to connect to the next Thanos or some larger event became way too high.

I think there’s only 2 reasons why Ms. Marvel had low ratings: trailers making it seem like it was geared towards the younger demographic, with many saying it looks like a Disney Channel show and Disney airing it around the same time as Obi-Wan. As for Thor: Love and Thunder, the divisive reactions might’ve cause that drop, but it’s still doing well. Besides MoM had like 67% drop yet the movie made 945 million, close to a billion dollars. Even No Way Home had a 68% drop, and well look how that turned out. So it’s not really that big of a deal. Oversaturation does play a big factor, and some not knowing wheres it all heading towards, especially with the quality of most of the entries, to put it nicely, not living up to expectations, causing people to grow fatigued and impatient. I’m not someone who’s growing tired of the MCU, but I am getting a bit overwhelmed by the amount of content we’re getting. It's kind of like when Shonen anime goes on for too long, it becomes a bit stale, over relies on tired tropes, fan service to keep interest in the wake of other competition. For the record, I am enjoying this new phase overall, but I acknowledge it hasn't been perfect. Issues I've noticed: 1) What's the new endgame? Yes, I know of Kang and Secret Wars, multiverse, etc. At the moment though, it just feels so ethereal. You understood Thanos was a threat at the end of Phase 1, Phase 2 formally introduced the Infinity Stones, and it culminated in Phase 3. We were blind to the details, but we understood the path. I think now we're blind to both and that can cause people to lose interest. 2) Too much change to the source material. Yes, Marvel has not been 100% faithful to the comics nor should it be. However, I feel most of the changes were organic and better served the story they were trying to tell. Now a lot just seems to have changed for the sake of it. Taskmaster is a completely different characters and more of a plot device. Ms Marvel uses energy constructs instead of stretching, probably to distinguish her from Mr. Fantastic and link her to Captain Marvel. Marvel does need to be careful with what they change, and when they do, do so in a way the audience understands. 3) They're scrapping other ideas. I think MoM is one of the better products of this phase, but I would have been interested to see what Derrickson's original idea would have been like. Plus Mordo was pushed to the side and in one of their earlier drafts, had Wanda kill him. Strange mentioned Mordo had been trying to kill him for years...you can't just sweep that under the rug with exposition! Hopefully Mordo will be a genuine threat in the future (perhaps as an Avatar as Dormammu?), but seeing what happened and what could have been has me worried. 4) Recast T'Challa. I understand that Boseman feels irreplaceable, but I just can't fathom how you're going to do Black Panther without Black Panther. I'm kind of hoping a variant takes his place. Ethan Hawke was supposed to be the Midnite Man, and if they recast him Marvel is going to look like hypocrites. 5) Movies and TV need a degree of separation. Movies are universally accessible (assuming your country isn't into banning things), but not everyone has or can afford Disney+. And not everyone can make time for the shows, we have lives to lead! I think MoM could have been better received if Wanda's Arc was reworked not to rely too much on Wandavision (and the movie did kind of ignore the ending of that series). Things I would suggest: 1) Let's put more focus on the multiverse and Kang, and why it is so bad. 2) Focus on most of our old cast to complete their stories while introducing 1 or two new mythos at a time. 3) Better think any SM changes through. 4) Make movies and TV independent. They can be in the same universe, but they don't really have to fully connect yet. 5) Pay closer attention to what was set up previously and try to follow through. 6) Either put more money into your VFX teams or focus on series that require less of it. I'm not a CGI hater, but the effects have gone downhill, particularly in the TV. Also, maybe Feige should share leadership with others so they can all make each corner of the MCU the best it can be. I'm sure he's trying his best but I fear he's being stretched thin now and is just approving projects without giving them a proper look over.

After Doc Strange (which was my most anticipated MCU movie this year)….I tapped out. I have no interest in seeing Thor Love & Thunder. Feige’s involvement has been more hands-off in Phase 4 - I think he’s rather overwhelmed dealing with Sony’s shenanigans and also Bob Chapek’s incessant need to be risk-adverse. He was rather hands-off for Multiverse of Madness (which is actually my 4th favorite MCU movie now!) because Sam Raimi is such a good director; he apparently intends to be hands-off for Fantastic Four - hand it off to an S-tier director so he doesn’t need to do too much. Marvel doesn’t actually interfere as much as contrarians like to say, but they do pick very inexperienced directors based on name recognition. Visually-oriented directors don’t want to work for Marvel - they hate the studio VFX process that Disney champions.

One of the issues with the MCU is the focus on representation or diversity over telling a good story. I'm not saying that you can't have one with the other, but when it is so heavy-handed that the plot suffers, then that's an issue. Also, there is no real direction for the MCU, so it comes off inconsequential.

Korey, there are many reason why Marvel is slipping and it has been predicted awhile back before Endgame was released: -Poor story arc for characters that have to rhyme or reason. -Devaluing their legacy characters by making them feel inferior to the "all-new" characters that they have to constantly prop up without proving themselves. -Inflating scores and perception of each film/TV and saying its high. -Poor antagonists -Directors and writer bashing their own work (see Thor:LaT), and then attack their consumers when they have an opinion. -Not respecting their source material and lore. -Using sociopolitical ideology towards their audience and treating them like they are just labels. I can go on and on. But, that's just a taste of what is wrong with Marvel, hell Disney, in general.

I was exhausted with the Batman, it’s not just mcu.. There are superhero shows everywhere everyone’s got powers now. The old guard, invincible, the boys, Star girl, Superman, the flash, Jupiter’s legacy etc. tons of superhero movies with knock off JL characters too. It’s superhero overload for a lot of ppl. It’s not just about writing. I think the mcu is fine in that department minus a few duds. But they had duds early on too like Thor the Dark world, iron man 2 and 3. And some ok films like Thor and cap first avenger. Winter soldier civil war, infinity war the first guardians movie, the first iron man movie and first avengers movie is top tier mcu in my opinion. Ms. Marvel was changed to a certain degree that caused her fans to not watch the show. Like come on make her an Inhuman and give her the embiggen powers. Diversity is important, but nothing is more important than story. You can’t sacrifice plot in place of diversity and gimmicks. They need to find a way to combine their current agenda with strong plot lines. If you tell a good story you can get away with a lot. I walked out of Thor. The plot got lost and I had to bounce. The other issue is target audience. Disney/Marvel is trying to make movies appeal more to the female audience. What they don’t realize is the classic Star Wars, Spider-Man etc. were huge BECAUSE female audience loved those films even though there wasn’t an over powered female character shoehorned in to the story. It’s like WNBA (of which I’m a fan), women still prefer to watch men playing basketball rather than women, which is one reason WNBA is not profitable. Why try to gear everything toward women, the numbers show most female viewers still prefer the male heroes more. Why? Who knows?

One of the reasons as to why the viwership has declined on marvel movies is that the characters that initially started the mcu have mostly left. Iron man and captain America were the heart of the mcu and their stories have wrapped. Now the focus on the mcu are characters that either dont have any emotional connection to the audience because A either they are relatively new characters in the mcu and comics or B the audience has moved on to other movie franchises because of the foundation has left. My other opinion as to why this is happening is because when Endgame wrapped it was considered the finale to the movie franchises that the majority of people went to watch and now the mcu is in an awkward position where they are honeslty starting from 0 again emotionally in regards to the audience but having 10 years of continuity that they have to follow and rely on but with an audience that either hasn't watched those films or believes that those connections and continuity should be left behind to start fresh again like when they originally started. Edit- marvel is trying to rely on emotional connections to bring in the audience but they have to build that emotional connection,they have to justify that love by building it with their new storylines and characters but what they are doing is trying to act that everyone already love their characters that just started their journey in the mcu thinking that people love and adore a character 1 movie in into a franchise. That love was built over years and years of movies. Iron man to endgame was years of movies and emotional connection. You cant get that result 1 movie in. That's how you get the money!!!

💯💯💯 Should be more love for this comment. Phase 1 was building toward the Avengers, establishing the core of the universe with characters that had gravitas that was earned through conflict and hardship. That gravity brought the universe together and held it together. Like leveling in a video game, gotta grind to get to level 99. Marvel is trying to start the replacements at "level 99" with none of the character-building. As you also stated, many of these characters were not well-received in the comics that preceded the movies/shows, but they are being preferred/presented for the sake of diversity/inclusion as opposed to building a team/universe on the strength of the characters overall. RiRi Williams, Sam Wilson, Jennifer Walters, Jane Foster, Kate Bishop, Yelena Belova, Shuri. All new, all different. Feige explicitly stated his desire to see "more than half" of Marvel heroes be female. Don't tell me there is no "agenda", LOL.
