🎬 With the recent announcement that Hugh Jackman Wolverine will be in Deadpool 3, I think I've about hit my tipping point when it comes to Marvel's Nostalgia Problem. Let's talk about Deadpool 3, Wolverine, and Marvel's Nostalgia Problem.
🔔 SUBSCRIBE: ru-vid.com?sub_con...
Remember 2017's Logan? You know, James Mangold's sublime masterpiece of comic book cinema and PROBABLY still one of the best cinematic send-offs of a long-standing actor from an iconic role, well…ever? It was perfect. Hugh Jackman couldn't have asked for a better way to bow out after nearly 20 years of playing Wolverine. But in classic MCU Phase Four fashion Hugh Jackman's gonna be back as Wolverine in Deadpool 3. And not just any regular Deadpool 3, the first MCU Deadpool movie. I think this is a SUPREMELY bad thing, but I also think that it’s a symptom of a much larger problem rather than THE problem in and of itself. Don’t get me wrong, it’s VERY egregious. Deadpool is a comedic satire of the superhero movie. Logan was a heartfelt conclusion. It’s like if they brought Daniel Craig back for Bond 26, after the character’s moving sacrifice in No Time to Die, only for the film, he returns to be…I dunno, Moonraker? Die Another Day? Tonally that’s what this feels like. What could they possibly do to justify resurrecting Jackman’s Wolverine? It’s entirely banking on the idea that audiences want to see Jackman and Reynolds together, which that’s fine, clearly, the two are friends and have some sort of report together even if it comes off manufactured for social purposes, but why in this setting? Why defile Logan’s grave for the sake of money. It simply speaks to the MCU problem in the fallout of Avengers Endgame. They're unable to let the past die and are even less interested in telling original, character-driven stories that serve to be more than another Disney product. It's not just about upholding artistic integrity, it's about a complete perversion of art and entertainment to the point that people only care to watch the new MCU movies for the sake of cameos, nostalgia, empty fan service, and hype. The MCU doesn't care, so why should I? In this MCU video essay, Griffin (@griffschiller) discuss Marvel's Phase Four Problem, the Deadpool problem, why Wolverine in Deadpool 3 is a bad idea, why I hate hugh jackman wolverine in deadpool 3, why nostalgia is ruining Marvel, and why I'm done with the mcu. Hopefully you understand where I'm coming from and try to enjoy this video on Marvel's Nostalgia Problem.

This is my take... A certain demographic doesn't care to see diversity on screen when I say diversity I'm strictly talking about skin colour not sexual orientation! Thus begging for characters like Daredevil whose shows were done right respectfully in their eyes, in which they also see themselves in. To them Deadpool and Wolverine look more like them than a Shang Chi or an Eternal would. ... "The MCU is dying" rhetoric is only coming from that group of people a large group might I add. Because now you have characters like Shang chi and ms marvel getting some spotlight, all of a sudden it's "woke" & "racial politics" I might sound crazy but I'm serious... it's really come to this! it's the definitive reason why now we have characters from the mid 2000s making comeback appearances seemingly from the dead all because those characters were from a time when "forced diversity" wasn't a thing.

Well, if I’m being honest, I think it’ll be another send off to Jackman’s Wolverine. From the teaser, Reynolds said “one more time”. And in Deadpool 2, Deadpool got a portable time machine. So I’m thinking that since Deadpool is probably aware of the merger and that he’ll be going into the MCU, he’s probably gonna wanna try to bring Jackman’s Wolverine with him. They’ll go on some adventure probably because Deadpool loses the time thing or it gets stolen and him and Wolverine gotta get it back so Wolverine can get back to his timeline. Maybe it’s one of those things where Wolverine recognizes “Wade” from Origins, but Deadpool is like “I’m not that f***ing c*cks***ing piece of Fox Studios branding bullsh*t”. Point is, Logan will probably find out that he will die, and Deadpool just wants his friend to go with him. Logan will decide to continue his path back towards the Foxverse and Deadpool comes into the MCU alone. So yes, nostalgia and whatnot. I’m still trying to be optimistic since the MCU has let me down too many times recently. Is it a cash grab? You know it. Am I defending it? Not really trying to. But I’m expecting another self contained Deadpool story.

I think if Disney just lets them do their thing, then it has the potential to be great, if they have the same team behind it that did Deadpool 2. I really don't think this decision to include Hugh Jackman was made by Disney. I feel like they've been building up to this for a while, and it was a part of the plan before Disney even got involved. However, I don't want this to be the same version of Wolverine. I want a chance to see classic Wolverine played by Hugh Jackman, which we've never been given. They probably won't shrink him to 5 feet tall (that would be really funny though, now that I think of it), but I'd really like to see him play the Wolverine character closer to the comics. And I also don't want this to go way off on a Deadpool/Wolverine in a separate universe story. I still want this to focus on Deadpool and Venessa- which has been the anchor for both movies so far. I could see them doing one of two things- 1) a proper X-force team with Deadpool, Wolverine, Cable, Colossus, and Domino, or 2) More of a solo Deadpool/Wolverine adventure that still ties in with the story so far from the first 2 movies. Maybe Deadpool gets kicked out of X-force, or decides to take a break from X-force to raise his kid with Vanessa. And then while he's on his own, he gets mixed in with Wolverine somehow. I don't know. I feel like there are many ways this could work really well though.

@@Fanimei please no. This seems like a one time thing, and I'm happy keeping it that way. Hugh Jackman playing Wolverine in a Deadpool movie, specifically, has been built up since the first movie came out. I believe they've been planning this, or at least talking about it together, for years, as can be seen by their social media "rivalry" and their joking with each other for years about Wolverine and Deadpool hating each other. I believe this is the only movie Hugh Jackman would ever want to come back to the role for, and I honestly don't even think he's gonna play Wolverine the same way he did in the Fox movies. My hope is that they make him more like classic Wolverine. AND HE SHOULD NEVER COME BACK AFTER THIS.

2 minutes in and I’ve already got a problem with the video. Dude clearly missed the bit where this takes place BEFORE Logan’s death which is something that both actor’s mentioned is as important to them as it is to the character himself. This isn’t “Wolverine brought back from the dead” and nor is it comic whimsy “alternate timeline Logan” either. It literally IS LOGAN. BEFORE he died. Can you not just accept that there is a very obvious gap in time between films where the character is seemingly floating around doing fuck all? You can literally make a story there and it WORKS. Not to mention the duo between Deadpool and Wolverine has always been comic gold and isn’t just something movie fans are mindlessly asking for. The synergy between Deadpool and Wolverine combined with their shared background as experiments but with heavily contrasted personalities has always been great. EDIT: Just finished the video after growing increasingly frustrated with this guy’s awful take. It feels like he’d been bottling up this opinion for YEARS and as soon as Ryan Reynolds said the name “Hugh Jackman!” The guy unleashed this 20 minute slog of idealism without actually stopping to finish listening to Reynolds mention the fact that they aren’t TOUCHING the overall arc of Logan and nor are they cheapening his portrayal because they’re literally revisiting a period of the character’s history that fans love. It’s like saying you’re not allowed to make a film between the prequels and the original trilogy of Star Wars. When that’s LITERALLY exactly what they did and have done all the time with stories like Kenobi and The Last Jedi: Fallen Order. It’s an exciting period in that story that was SO WELL WRITTEN the first time around that the writers left a door open for themselves years and years later to write a new and plausible entry into that timeline which only bolsters our love for those worlds and those characters. This guy says that he feels “alone” but I call cap on that, because that’s a fucking lie. It feels like it’s MORE popular than ever before to hate on the MCU and criticize it (and I’m not saying some of it doesn’t deserve criticism but criticizing for the SAKE of being critical is where things get out of hand) now that the glory years of a single and unconfused timeline leading up to avengers infinity war are over. And to justify that opinion because “well Scorsese said it so it must be true!“ What a load of bullshit. Which basically makes this video one giant fucking mistake because he didn’t bother to check for the validity surrounding the very basic details of which his whole point is built on top of.

Honestly those Reynolds and Jackman's characters feel more consistent together given that they were operating at the same time and share the R-rated anti-hero characterization. I don't think it's that big of a deal. The Deadpool movies have been very self contained, and there are so many ways they can explain him entering the MCU. Or they don't even have to explain it in-universe. He can just suddenly be in the MCU and it'll work, because he's Deadpool. If they really want some sort of an explanation, he can just say something like "we got bought by Disney so I guess I'm in the MCU now." He can interact with two version of Wolverine, and it still works because, as we saw in the first Deadpool movie, he knows about different timeline versions of characters. If you want an in-universe explanation, they could say he is hallucinating Hugh Jackman's face onto Wolverine's body. There are so many ways they could make it work. They could even make a joke about how Wolverine is gonna be recast in the next movie, and trying to figure out who's gonna be the next Wolverine. There are so many directions they can take it.

It's still the Fox universe. Fox being bought by Disney doesn't automatically make Deadpool a part of the MCU. Could they just throw him in there? Yeah, but since the contracts go 'til 2025, 'Deadpool 3' will most likely still be in Fox universe. Hugh Jackman might be brought back one last time for 'Avengers - Secret Wars', but I'd say his presence in 'Deadpool 3' will also be tied to the Fox universe, so don't expect Hugh Jackman Wolverine to show up in some flashback with Chris Evans Captain America or anything. The most I could see MCU in 'Deadpool 3' is maybe the TVA because of Deadpool's mess through time.

Dude, this is hysterical, literally the first thing Ryan and Hugh said was they're not TOUCHING Logan at all, he died in it, that's its own thing. This is like getting upset that Hugh Jackman showed up in the mid credits of Deadpool 2 for a joke. In fact Deadpool 2 is literally one big meta joke about Deadpool being envious of the movie Logan and in many ways a parody of it. Literally the first line of the movie is "FUCK WOLVERINE", complaining about Logan one-upping him as the good R-Rated Superhero movie, and the whole movie basically sees Deadpool play out the same story arc and even directly parodying Logan's emotional death scene. But what, does Logan somehow become less emotional because Deadpool 2 exists or that Hugh Jackman plays the character again in an entirely different, overtly comedic context? They are completely aware of what they're doing and that Logan is a significant thing and they're purposefully and officially working around that to maintain the movie's emotional core. Plus EVERYONE is fucking stoked for a Deadpool Wolverine teamup, it's kind of a thing... You're part of the less than 1% who watched the Deadpool 3 announcement and went "Oh no..." much less "OH I HATE IT SO MUCH I'M DONE!". This is not a nostalgia problem, it's a you problem, I'm sorry. It actually belies a very significant problem with certain subsects of movie goers who seemingly have this perception that a death or death arc is cheapened by the character appearing somewhere else, because they're making it about the LITERAL PHYSICAL APPEARANCE of the character in media rather than actual emotional beats of the story. They're not being sad about Logan's death in the movie because of the arc, the acting, the characterization and the communication of emotion that creates empathy and invokes sadness, they're literally just crying because he supposedly won't show up anywhere else. Which is exactly why Logan isn't so sad and effective. It's not because it's some end of an era bullshit, it's because the movie is genuinely emotionally appealing and engaging because of its filmmaking merits. Getting mad that he shows up in Deadpool 3 is what actually cheapens his death scene, because it implicitly relegates him to no more than a media presence or an object you are attached to rather than a character one is invested in because of how compelling he was in said media. I don't watch Doctor Strange 2, see Charles Xavier and then go "Well I guess that RUINED his death scene in Logan", because I think that's baby-brained shit...

@@Jose-se9pu With NWH they had the opportunity to bring back two legacy characters. They had 5 films of history, plus the advantage that of all the spiderman films being released in somewhat close order so a good portion of your audience has emotional ties to the introduced characters. Most importantly it brought them back in an honoring and satisfying way. It payed off big time (if nothing else financially). But thats a rare recipe. You see immediately with MoM that they didnt understand that. While NWH certainly catered to the fans in bringing beloved characters it did fit with the story and felt meaningful and worthwhile, which does lead to good financial investments they COULD use to their advantage because people want to continue the story with ALL of the spiderman characters. MoM however just threw fanfiction at the wall for the sake of it. It didnt add to the story and it proved meaningless. The one character they had that couldve had a similar impact was Xavier. For a moment in the film I thought he couldve been incredibly useful (when he goes in Wandas mind) but he turned out to be as useless as every other pop up character. Using his and the audiences experience with him trying to reach Jean (and the other xmen to an extent) couldve been an emotional moment that payed off. Instead he and all the other characters were simply there for the general marvel audience to get their does of adrenaline (and lets be honest half of the audience has to look up youtube videos to understand whose from what anyways).

@Jack Smith Isn't it rather pretentious to gatekeep who is and isn't an artist? For instance, Marvels films like the Eternals didn't feature any nostalgia and fanservice and felt different for most Marvel films. And yet it was probably the most panned Marvel films from both critics and audiences. But was the Eternals director Chloé Zhao not a real artist? Why do we get to cherry pick who is or who isn't an artist?
@JackSmith-ns1uq
@JackSmith-ns1uq Год назад
@@realityshifter3399 People really love using the term “gatekeep” lately but its pretty useless toward me or any other random person on the internet. I dont hold the keys to gate. Right now Disney holds the key to the gate. Certainly sometimes artists get through, for sure. But all you have to do is see the turn over rate in directors leaving projects due to “creative differences to understand.” But lets go on with the “gatekeeping” idea. If you are satisfied with ikea art, no problem. But at the end of the day there is a difference between ikea art and museum art. Artists are going to care about that difference. They are going to know it and understand it. Naturally if you get a piece of ikea art and claim its museum art, people are going to call BS, for good reason. Its not that you cant be happy with your ikea art, its not that theres anything wrong with you enjoying. Its simply very clearly not museum art. So is that gatekeeping righteous? Id say not really. The museum art earned its place. Ikea art in turn earned its place: not in a museum but in a store, mass produced and sold so that everyone can have it in their living room. Now look, I get it. Personally theres nothing special to me about a Jackson Pollock painting. To me personally its not worth more than $20. But i have to acknowledge that to artists who are into it, and are in that medium, and understand that history - they know its worth thousands of dollars. I have to acknowledge its worth based off of that and not what Id personally pay for it. So whose to say the random joe or jill that did your picture from ikea isnt an artist? Nobody or everyone. Its relevant. Im sure they have a great portfolio of cool stuff. At the end of the day people are paying $20-100 for their work at a store, and single work of Jackson Pollock is thousands and thousands of dollars at auction. Lets bring it back to movies. I enjoy me some Transformers man. Its not a piece of art by any means. Its a amusement ride plane and simple. I turn off my brain and watch cool vehicles turn into warriors and punch eachother in the face. Im not denying that people didnt work hard on those films, or that the people involved arent true artists. Theres a lot of craft involved, Michael Bay knows his stuff when it comes to what he does. Theres a lot of craft and artistry when it comes to a theme park too. Marvel isnt any different. You go on your ride of mindless action, quippy jokes and brief moments of drama that are then interrupted by more quippy jokes followed a fun cameo and some more action - why? Because its a ride. Thats what it is. Nothing wrong with enjoying it. Just dont get it mixed up something else. The eternals had some good cinematography at times, particularly in natural landscape for sure. But the story is jumbled mess. The characters are less memorable versions of other superheros (im pretty sure Ironman’s suit has more powers than half their team). The design is forgettable. Their are too many characters leading to them being pretty one-note. I couldnt hum you a single tune from the soundtrack. I dont think its Zhaos fault necessarily. But at the end of the day thats all there not because the artists in each department didnt want to make art but because they are making an ikea photo assembly lined product. Not. Art. Dang. I shouldve just made my own video essay to reply to your comment 😂. Anyways. At the end of the day is that pretentious gatekeeping? Maybe? I dont care. Label me however you want. Its about as meaningful as my “gatekeeping” is to the large fandom. Its not. If you actually read that whole response, bravo man. Dont take anything personally - for me I just enjoy talking about this stuff and its nothing more than that to me.

@@JackSmith-ns1uq No, you don't actually have to "hold the keys" to act as though you're gatekeeping. In fact, that's the problem with gatekeeping, they don't hold the keys but what to decide what is legitimate and what is not legitimate for the rest of us. And I let go of the whole gatekeeping idea when people STOP doing it. "But at the end of the day there is a difference between ikea art and museum art. Artists are going to care about that difference." What do you mean ikea art and museum art? I don't think museum art is style or genre of art. Do you mean high art and low art? Because the lines between high art and low art have increasingly been blurred in the art world. "Naturally if you get a piece of ikea art and claim its museum art, people are going to call BS, for good reason. " Why because ikea art is accessible to everyone? Does being accessible make it less artful? That's a little pretentious. "The museum art earned its place. Ikea art in turn earned its place: not in a museum but in a store, mass produced and sold so that everyone can have it in their living room." So, because its art that you have in your living room that means that it's lower quality of art? I'm sorry, but the idea that great art only belongs in a museum or gallery is a rather outdated notion. "At the end of the day people are paying $20-100 for their work at a store, and single work of Jackson Pollock is thousands and thousands of dollars at auction. " But that's not how it works, the quality or inherent work of a piece of art is reduced to how much its worth. Because that can obviously be relative. Also, do you think pieces of art is just inherently worth thousands of dollars as soon it's made. Granted, I'm not the biggest expert of the art world but from what do know that isn't how it works. "Theres a lot of craft involved, Michael Bay knows his stuff when it comes to what he does. Theres a lot of craft and artistry when it comes to a theme park too. Marvel isnt any different. You go on your ride of mindless action, quippy jokes and brief moments of drama that are then interrupted by more quippy jokes followed a fun cameo and some more action - why? Because its a ride. What you said about Michael Bay and Marvels films can easily be said for any genre blockbuster. From Jurassic Park to Raider of the Lost Ark to Terminator to Alien to original Star Wars. Based on your definition of what is art, you can easily say that they were all just rides, with spectacle being the main selling point. " I dont think its Zhaos fault necessarily. But at the end of the day thats all there not because the artists in each department didnt want to make art but because they are making an ikea photo assembly lined product. Not. Art. " No, they wanted to make art, that why they hired her to begin with. If they just wanted to make an assembly line product well then that could have been any body. It didn't have to get Chloé Zhao to direct. "Anyways. At the end of the day is that pretentious gatekeeping? Maybe? I dont care. Label me however you want. Its about as meaningful as my “gatekeeping” is to the large fandom. Its not. If you actually read that whole response, bravo man. Dont take anything personally - for me I just enjoy talking about this stuff and its nothing more than that to me." Don't worry, I didn't take anything personally. I just strongly disagree with your outlook on art. I think we should have gotten to the point where we should question the hard lines between pop art and high art? I mean, was TDK trilogy an amusement park ride? What about Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings trilogy? Where exactly does low art become high art? Or is it always low art due to the subject matter?

I still want the core of the movie to be Deadpool and Vanessa. Maybe Deadpool is raising a kid now. I really think, though, that this will be more than a cameo. I feel like they've been building up to this since the first movie, and I think he's gonna be an important part of the story, and more than just a throwaway reference. To even be able to use those characters anywhere in live action, they have to use the fox actors. Atleast until the contracts end in 2025. But it would have made it impossible to get any new iterations of X-men characters in something until 2026 at the soonest and that’s pushing it. It would be like if marvel decides to bring back Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark as a varient but that would still undermine Downey's goodbye to the role. I would have been if it was Dafne Keen taking up the mantle of wolverine post Logan and co-starring alongside Ryan in Deadpool 3 via time or demensional travel or if they just recasted the role of Logan but Disney-Marvel are afraid that any actor could live up Hugh's iconic performance of the character so they go the lazy route and bring back Hugh even though he said goodbye. Now look I many people wanted the accurate Deadpool and Wolverine to interact on screen but it was too little too late for that and I made peace with that at the time. I was fine with their "rivalry" as themselves. Bringing Hugh back is going to retcon Logan's death but it does retcon Hugh's meaningfull farewell to the character.

While I see where you're coming from, I have to disagree on this. This got me super hyped. I think there is so much they can do with this. For fans of the comics and or even fans of the movies, who wouldn't want to see Deadpool and Wolverine together? Specifically these versions of the characters that a lot of people see as the definitive live action versions? This could be the chance to see Hugh Jackman in the classic Wolverine costume. See his dynamic with this Deadpool. Maybe see him and Colossus interact and hopefully get the Fastball Special! I think we've had so many superhero movies for so long being so careful about doing crazy comics stuff. Instead trying to focus on a more grounded and realistic take. We're at the point where now anything can happen! Never in my life would I have thought we were going to get to see all three Spider-Men in one movie. Never did I think I was ever going to see that Doc Ock interact with that Electro for example. But it's possible! It's fun and exciting! These are things that we could only dream about in the past. Now it's becoming a reality. We're always going to have Logan. We're always going to have that end for that aspect of the character in that bubble. I don't think it's wrong to see these two interact in a movie disconnected from Logan. To just have a movie for the fans and people that want to see it. I think it'd be more egregious for them to say, "Yeah we could've done this really awesome thing that plenty of fans would've loved to see, but we decided not to.". If this is the one and only chance to get a more comic accurate look and feel for Hugh's Wolverine and to see him interact with this Deadpool, I'm all in.

This franchise has given me some of my best and most positive memories; nothing will match the excitement that I felt as a younger kid when the Winter Soldier, Age of Ultron, Civil War, Infinity War, and Endgame first came out and I saw the trailers for each of those film. To hell with the popular opinion. I agree with that sentiment wholeheartedly. To bring Hugh Jackman back as Wolverine completely undermines what was, in my opinion, one of the greatest character send-off in the superhero genre. Same can be said of Iron Man and Captain America in Endgame. For what it's worth, their respective send-offs were PERFECT in Endgame. Their character arcs and stories as a whole are DONE, you couldn't possibly ask for a more satisfying ending for them. Now imagine Feige announcing that RDJ and Chris Evans were coming back in their iconic roles...

But then when Fox was bought but Disney that change felt almost too late and then we got Dark Phoenix and The New Mutants (the latter I didn’t mind actually) and the brand left us with a whimper than a bang. Now the X-Men brand has slowly built itself back up for us to be truly excited about seeing these characters again and the original concept for DP3 is a possibility rather than a what if (albeit with some tweaks obviously) and I couldn’t be more excited because it’ll feel like a proper farewell to that side of the franchise before we completely move on to the MCU version of X-Men and Mutants. You're right the over usage of merging characters into movies often takes the attention off of an actual good emotionally driven story Arc often resulting in extreme lack of character depth. The more you see a familiar face pop up in marvel movies the more the story drifts away from the story, the more the actors forget to remain in character and suspend disbelief also the writers must not rely on nostalgia to tell the story because the story still needs a well written logic to defend it's existence. My biggest gripe with BVS was everything except Ben Affleck's Batman performance and his scenes as The Dark Knight. It was believable, it was fascinating but the rest of the story lacked extremely in rational and any to little form of believability. I believed Logan when I watched it, infact the movie was so well written I saw it 3 times in the theater and brought it on DVD upon it's release because the movie finally honored the character in terms of tone, depth and the perfect character driven story arc.

Dude, this has nothing to do with nostalgia. This is something fans have demanded for years. Marvel is literally listening to the fans. Ima go ahead and respectfully suggest/assert you never read many comics. To assert that movie story lines have to be treated differently, is easily interpreted as an assertion that comics and the way they tell their stories is somehow "less than". It's a bit arrogant. LOGAN was literally a movie based on nostalgia, with the long awaited R rating....... Thanks in large part to, wait for it.......... DEADPOOL. Quite literally, Marvel can't re-cast characters until after this movie. Quite literally, nobody wants to see another character. Nobody wants a new actor with Ryan. It IS meta. Their real life friendship, paired with 4th wall breaking, AND Wolverine vs Deadpool is anything but lazy. It's comics 101. And yes, it's absolutely appropriate to let comics philosophy transfer into film philosophy. At least when you are making Superhero movies. This is the PERFECT way to introduce X-MEN and mutants (along with DEADPOOL) into the MCU. Hugh actually gets to legit pass the torch now. If you think DEADPOOL wasn't a risk (a recent risk) you're not paying attention. (Except you are)..............but I get it. The "hot take" keeps your comment section poking that algorithm.
