The original theme was a non starter for my kids. They wouldn't even give it a look. Played this one was at Gencon, they loved it, and have been waiting for it to be released ever since.
This game seemed to be based more on the comics than the MCU, but they probably excluded the X-Men so as to appeal to more folks who aren't as familiar with the theme -- or only know it through the films.

...no. Haha. Seriously though, I already own Splendor. I'm not paying for another copy with Marvel drawings on it. Yeah, I know there are minor rule changes but those don't justify it.
See, this feels like a good idea, but I also feel as though the original Spender is a much better gateway game than Marvel Splendor, specifically for people who you want to get into board games, but who are not a fan of geek culture, (like, say, my girlfriend.) My dream would be for there to be a game of Splendor with the exact same rules as the original, but set somewhere on the continent of Africa, (or, Wakanda, if you want to keep the geek/fantasy theme going). My primary gripe with Splendor is that the presentation and theme, which are already thin, are also just really Eurocentric, and sometimes, I just don’t have the brain for that. Even so, I would still play it, but the Eurocentric theme would be a total turn off for my girlfriend, which makes me sad, because mechanically, it’s an amazing first step into the world of board games.
