This is such a fantastic, in-depth analysis. Watching you go over the strength of the poses, fx animation, and camera motions really makes me want to watch FLCL again with a more attentive eye. Amazing stuff.
Why did you stop sooo soon! FLCL was the anime that inspired so much of my art making as a child. Really really enjoyed watching this break down in a way that I never slowed down to appreciate. This was fun!
One thing i love about flcl is how it was pretty much made by gainax's newest talent just handing them the reigns its a spectacular show with amazing animation
FLCL is one of my top anime's of all time !! id love to hear your thoughts on how FLCL uses and really stresses the very idea of it being animated as a medium, with the way it loves to play with different styles and formats of drawing, almost back to back in some cases, just so it can add another layer of environmental storytelling to the story
Wonderful breakdown as usual, do you think you'll look into some scenes from Gurren Lagann, one of the last works from Gainax before the split off into Trigger and i think it has some of the most phenomenal animation to date despite being well over a decade old. So many greats worked on their old and new, from Hiroyuki Imaishi, Yoh Yoshinari, Sushio, Hisashi Mori, Tadashi Hiramatsu to those who would later go on great things like Chikashi Kubota, and Hironori Tanaka just to name a few.
I have no idea why my brain thinks simulating James Baxter's style is infinitely harder than this. I don't know why, but I always perceive animes as being more simplified than the best Western animation-not clunky, just simpler. I was dissecting Jujutsu Kaisen fights frame by frame in DaVinci Resolve, and it wasn't harder to understand the timing than all the swaggering in 101 Dalmatians or Sinbad. Jujutsu Kaisen seemed "more human" and realistic, which I find easier to understand than a stylized movement. I don't know if it's because each person's perception is different, or if all that swagger in characters is harder. Nonetheless, I started studying anime because it clearly did not move so much as top-tier Western animation, and I wanted to save some time in a trailer animation.
The punch from Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann (I feel like it's heavily inspired by this, he did work on the series a bit) I feel like this type of Sakuga animation is 50% of the success of *Space Dandy*
great breakdown thank you! I love watching stuff like this and I always grab cool scenes and analyse them frame by frame. Cant seem to find many videos on what ref a lot of these anime artists use and their workflow. Any good vids out there please?
@@HowardWimshurst thank btw, you make me a bit comfortable to not be afraid of copying an animation. still struggling on constant procrastination though...
