+NormanMatchem Honestly Nanny, I never touched them!
@NormanMatchem
@NormanMatchem 8 лет назад
Nounismisation Ah, about Nanny, is that someone hired to take care of children, or is it the name you give grandmothers? I'm from Newfoundland, a Province, formerly a country, off the East coast of Canada, part of Great Britain until 1949, and my grandmothers were always Nan or Nanny. They even signed cards to their grandchildren with Nan O or Nan M, the letter being that of their last names. Absolute angels they are, priorly figuratively, presently literally.
@Nounismisation
@Nounismisation 8 лет назад
My word, it seems rediulous that Britain made any claim whatsoever to a place like Newfoundland. I mean really!? What next? China?
@NormanMatchem
@NormanMatchem 8 лет назад
Nounismisation Well, Newfoundland was discovered in 1497 by John Cabot (Giovanni Caboto), an Italian explorer hired by king Henry VII. For almost the entirety of the next 452, Newfoundland was part of Great Britain. We gained independence from them for a short time in the 1930s, but ultimately what with the Great Depression, quickly decided to let them make the important decisions for us from London. One of the few countries on Earth to return to being part of Britain after being let go. A lot of what you said in your longer comment went over my head, but the "sticklebacks in an old tin can" bit is very familiar. My friends and I used to enjoy catching "specklebacks" in whatever container we could find. Very tiny fish, perhaps 3cm long at most, little over an inch, but usually around an inch as I recall. Some were completely smooth all around, others had two barbs poking out the sides of their heads. Sharp enough to draw blood. Does this sound like what you call "sticklebacks", or is it a different type of tiny fish?
@Nounismisation
@Nounismisation 8 лет назад
NormanMatchem Yeah. Very. Without looking it up I'd say that they're kind of the same family. Little, utterly useless freshwater things. Certainly the same activity though. I had thought that Newfoundland had been 'discovered' by Vikings who settled there before falling out with the indigenous peoples. Now I'm not so sure. Am I thinking of somewhere else. Sorry you didn't understand what I said in my epic post. Is it the language? I could edit it if so...
