Marvin Johnson vs Jean Marie Emebe 

Definitely one of the biggest accomplishments of Johnson’s career. People used to harp on the fact that he’d never made a successful defense, but those same people overlook the fact that Johnson took the hardest fights he could possibly get the first two times around: Saad Muhammad (because Saad was the only man who’d defeated him) and Mustafa Muhammad. He was definitely not like TODAY’S fighters. There’s no shame in losing to those guys. However, after those guys-along with Michael Spinks and Dwight Qawi-ceased to be players at 175, Johnson was still around whuppin’ up on younger guys, including future champs like Leslie Stewart and Charles Williams. I remember one writer described Johnson as being like a wind-up toy, starting strong and fading toward the end. In this fight, though, in his twilight years, he showed that he could win the long race. And as I’ve said elsewhere, even during his senior years, Johnson had only ONE speed: ON!

C'mon... no way.. no reason to stop this fight. What a shame!

Imagine they're saying there was no money to be made for a LHW in those days. Johnson, as champion, got only $75,000 for this fight, maybe the equivalent of 250 k to 350k in todays money. Despite having the best group ever in that division, there was no money? Maybe there was no money for the fighters but plenty for Don King. During that era there was Saad Muhammad,...Mustafa Muhammad,... Marvin Johnson,...Dwight Qawi,... Michael Spinks,...Jacqui Lopez,... Murray Sutherland, Leslie Stewart and several others.
