Victor Galindez retired in 1980 because he had two detached retinas. He was participating in an auto race on October 25th, 1980 when he was standing in a pit area and was struck by an out of controlled car. Galindez was a great puncher who was never in a dull fight. RIP Victor.
Two of the most underrated Light-Heavyweights of all time, particularly Galindez, who I believe deserves a top fifteen place in the all time Light-Heavyweight rankings. That's quite an achievement considering it's possibly boxing's most talented division in terms of depth of quality across history.
Johnson not only dropped Galindez for the first time in "Vicious Victor's" career,he broke Galindez' jaw."Pops" Johnson,a southpaw, had a GREAT left uppercut.
Galindez was not a puncher, and fought in the toughest era of 175lbers, and still managed to be a two time champion and his first reign lasted for 4 years. Impressive.
I watched many Galindez title fights back then. Not to take anything away from Johnson, but Galindez was just a ghost of himself here. Johnson still might have beaten a prime Galindez, who was primarily a counter puncher, a mismatch for Johnson. Some of the best Galindez bouts were against his nemesis, Jorge Ahumada. Those two were like the Ali/Frazier or Ali/Norton of Argentina.
Esta pelea la vi en directo y en blanco y negro..sabía que si Johnson metía la izquierda a fondo Galindez se caía,no era el mismo.senti mucho esta derrota.😢
Victor Galindez was never given his due because he was overshadowed in Argentina by the great Carlos Monzon. Galindez was not that great but he was a tough puncher who came to fight. Rest in Peace Victor Galindez.
That's right . James Scott was in line to fight John Conteh for title but got in trouble and was sent to prison . While in prison he beat # 1 contender Eddie Gregory and was in line to face Mike Rossman . Rossmans father said he would not put his son in the ring with that monster Scott . So Galindez beats Rossman , the WBA then stripped Scott of his # 1 spot in fear Scott would beat Galindez . So Galindez gives Johnson the shot who was ranked behind Scott . Scott then beats Yaqui Lopez and is ranked # 1 again . Johnson who beats Galindez and gives Eddie Gregory the shot who Scott already beat . Scott discouraged by all this loses a decision to Dwight Braxton who only 3 months later destroys Saad Muhammad for title . Scott would have beat Rossman , Galindez and Johnson all WBA protected fighters .
This fight, Leonard-Benitez and Hagler-Antufermo all for free on the same day. They would probably charge 300 bucks today for that. And they wonder why MMA is more popular. 1% of the fighters make 99% of the money, Freaking ridiculous!
I lost my last 3k on victor in this fight and that was a lot back in 1979 and was going to put the whole thing on sugar ray over benitez following this fight. Not a good feeling watching this and then having to watch Sugar ray win easily in the next. Lets put it this way i did not shed any tears a year later when i heard Victor was killed at a race car event.
great, so another socipathic compulsive gambler puts his feelings over losing $$ to human life. Not surprising. It wasn't Galindez's fault you lost your 3,000. It was your fault.
@MelC54: Not true completely. Galindez was a solid all-around fighter. He could box well enough and he could press well enough. He wasn't pretty to watch, but he could be explosive. Even in this fight, he showed some clever defensive moves. Johnson was just solid and boxed very well in this one, and the left hand that ended it...Well...the proof is in the film...
And dont forget Galindez was tough as a rock; in fact he was nicknamed bull in spanish; watch the epic Galindez-Kates in which he fought with a cut eye and the referee's shirt ended up all red!
