This is a sponsored video by our show partner Marvin Windows & Doors. We are reviewing a huge contemporary multi-slide door from www.marvin.com This 15’ wide by 10’ door is Aluminum clad on the outside and features a beautiful walnut interior. But, it’s the performance that really makes us like this door! Joining me is Corey Claunch, the owner of Architectural Impressions which is the Austin, TX dealer where I buy my Marvin & Integrity Windows and Doors.

How do you practically construct such wide door lintels to make them structurally sound.

i didn't see how the door pockets. do two panels sit behind one when opened? do all three panels go into a pocket in the wall?

Hey Matt big fan of you. I was wondering if you could do a video regarding the vinyl sliding door from Harvey Building Products. I’m having an issue with either my weep holes or my drainage channels. I have a leak in my door and for the life of me I cannot pinpoint exactly where it’s coming from. Please help me out.

Matt my main interest with a slide door or french door is lock down security. Are these doors tamper resistant?

Karen O most of the ones I have seen have weeping holds on the outside and essentially operate like a tray holding the door, and drain everything out. Haven’t seen the Marvin in person but I’ve seen a lot of similar.

How do these doors fare on the blower door testing? are they compatible with a high performance house where any leakage is critical?

@michaelstiller2282 6 лет назад
Donald Lee it could cost more than some peoples homes. I worked on a project with a 3 panel lift and slide pocket door, it was at least 100k, just for the door. Marvin won't warranty it, unless it's was installed by a factory trained pro. That guy could live far away, and put themselves up in a hotel for the duration of the job, which you are paying for. That was 6 years ago.

Another thing to keep in mind, the sill is not designed to manage water infiltration, i.e. you better have enough overhang or covered area to keep water away from the doors

august it comes out transparent. it is more like a very fine chalk that does not attract dust. this leaves a nice film for the door to ride upon. Home depot carries it.

I tried to use graphite dust on my rollers on one of my doors, and that was fine... But moisture killed it. White lithium is the answer, and what we ultimately used.

Just curious, why would Marvin promote this style of sliding door when they currently make a passive house style lift and slide? If the weatherstripping adds friction, (which you can logically conclude it does because he mentions it rolls smoother without it) then you can reasonably conclude the weatherstripping will be subject to wear and tear. The lift and slide seems to be a far better design in ease of use, performance, and longevity. Is there any advantage of this style over lift and slide besides maybe price?
@paperwait9611
@paperwait9611 6 лет назад
i agree that the seal in this sliding door will degrade over time. i assume that the seal can be replaced when it wears out, though. wouldn't a lift and slide be quite a bit more expensive than the sliding door featured in this video?
@JaredCzaia
@JaredCzaia 6 лет назад
Have you ever seen a passive house (Zola, Gaulhofer, Marvin makes one as well) lift and slide door in action? It doesn't require much force to lift the door onto the rollers, and when on the rollers there is less resistance when rolling. I'm not sure we're thinking about the same style of door, the brands I've mentioned don't focus on showrooms/commercial spaces as much as residential. Search lift and slide passive house in youtube and you'll see what I'm referring to. Also, I don't mean this to be snarky at all but just a heads up that I think you'd be a more effective communicator without the quotes and your audience would be more receptive if you stopped using them. Just a suggestion - not meant to insult.
@paperwait9611
@paperwait9611 6 лет назад
@deeremeyer1: the amount of bluster in your comments far exceeds the amount of information contained in them. in fact, much of what you state is wrong. lift and slide doors are typically considerably more expensive than conventional sliding doors because the mechanism is more complex. that expense is undoubtedly the reason why you see a lot more conventional sliding doors than you do lift and slide doors. a lift and slide door seals more tightly than a conventional sliding door. when the door un-lifts, it drops into the seal, so the weight of the door is used to achieve a tighter seal. when you are "sliding in the seal" as is the case with a conventional sliding door, you can't get air tightness, which is one of the requirements for energy efficiency. as jared czaia commented, there are passive house certified lift and slide doors (at least US certified, i don't know about germany).

It looks cool but I don't get the point of a door like this. When would you ever open it up? I don't want bugs or birds flying in my house
@tylerhuff4207
@tylerhuff4207 6 лет назад
A door like that isn't for performance. It's for show. I'm sure it's a good door but if you are concerned about performance you wouldn't have that much glazing
@paperwait9611
@paperwait9611 6 лет назад
the purpose for a lot of glazing is to let in more natural light. in modern windows, the "performance" is in the glazing, not in the frame. depending on your climate zone, if performance is what you want (and i assume that you mean "thermal performance") you would go with a triple glazed igu. however, i don't know if marvin makes this product available with a triple glazed igu, but there are companies that do offer similar products with a triple glazed igu.
@paperwait9611
@paperwait9611 6 лет назад
@deeremeyer1: you are uninformed. glazing is a term which is very much in modern use. a multiple lite window system is called by the acronym: igu. guess what the "g" stands for? you've got it!

Being that your in Texas, my main question is why in the world are using a frame rather than an aluminum frame. Wood is only going to swell and lose its squareness over time. I know this for fact. I just move out of Florida and trust me when I say there’s waaaaay more heat and humidity their than Texas. Oh yeah, when are you going to build a working man’s AFFORDABLE shipping container home?
