In this video, Mary Adut Achiek presents her research on women’s roles in traditional leadership within the Jieng community of Tonj, Warrap State, South Sudan. Mary explores the barriers faced by women in leadership and highlights the contributions of notable female leaders. Her interviews with 27 individuals provide a comprehensive look at the challenges and successes of women in these positions.
Mary also shares her personal journey and the support she received from the South Sudan Women’s Research Network (SSWRN), which has been instrumental in empowering her as a researcher. This research is part of SSWRN, an EU-funded initiative by the Rift Valley Institute aimed at empowering women researchers and incorporating local women’s voices into research that influences decision-making on critical social issues in South Sudan.
