In all my 72 years on this little blue dot we inhabit. I can honestly say no sound has ever captured my attention like the pipes of this beautiful young lady. The most wonderful gift I could ever have asked for and just happened to find it on you tube of all places. God bless you and thank you Mary Black. You are a gift from God, and you have a gift from Him.

I am on your list too, Thomas. I am 76 and I have never heard a voice quite so wonderful. I cannot tell you what it does to my soul when she sings, but it is strong enough that I have asked my Lord to allow me to visit Ireland some day, as it must be a wonderful place to produce such a marvelous voice. I suspect that I will not get to visit in this life, but surely in the next when I am home with my dear Savior. Then I will surely visit Ireland.

My family comes from Ireland, on both sides. Went through the horrors of the civil war in Ireland: North against South, Protestant against Catholic. Heard this song on Oregon Public Radio more than 30 years ago, and it brought home the reality of my beautiful homeland. I've followed Mary Black ever since. This song brings me back to the beauty of my people and my land. And, forever, she will be the iconic voice of Ireland and of peace.

I first heard Mary Black sing this ballad on the radio, I think on Thistle and Shamrock, on St. Patrick's Day in 1984. It was a live recording of a concert with DeDanaan in Charleston, S.C. The singing was so heartfelt and pure. At the end of the song, there was perhaps 7 or 8 seconds of silence before a sustained applause. Much thanks for posting,

Dreaming in the night, I saw a land where no man had to fight Waking in your dawn, I saw you crying in the morning light Lying where the Falcons fly, they twist and turn all in you e'er blue sky Living on your western shore, saw summer sunsets asked for more I stood by your Atlantic sea and I sang a song for Ireland... In our memories, will remain two voices for this hymn: Luke and Mary !

One of the very best renditions of Dick Gaughan's classic song about Ireland, expressing a hope for peace that was ultimately (and mostly) met. Mary Black really makes this her own song, kinda like how Aretha Franklin made Otis Redding's "Respect" her own.

I'm an Irish-American. I wasn't born in Ireland, I've never been there, and I do have other heritage. I also really despise Irish-Americans who think they're doing justice to their heritage simply by drinking Guinness and wearing green on St. Patrick's Day. A lot of these people are racist and just overall not very nice, so it's annoying to me that they'll say things like "I'm Irish" or "It's my Irish temper" when they actually know nothing about the culture of Ireland and the struggle its people went through. With all of that said, this song makes me cry. I don't know if it's possible to "miss" a place you've never been to, but I feel a lot of pride in my heritage when I listen to the song.

Hamza, on second thoughts, have you ever socialized, mingled, fraternized or had a beer with any Irish people ? I have been all over Scotland, Ireland, Canada and Australia and have never encountered such a bunch of yobbos of Irish heritage. Are you saying it's only the American Irish?. Which city are you from? You seem to have a tremendous chip on your shoulder. Perhaps Ireland is not for you Hamza...Cheers :)
