Every time I hear this song it elicits very strong emotions- sadness, regret, sorrow, but hope as well. She taps into the shared experience like no other songwriter.
Mary Chapin Carpenter can fill your ears with her lovey sound...fill your heart with the dimensions of life...fill your mind with the thoughts: past, present, future...the serenity of her soul is passed to you as you contemplate her lyrics...she can calm your heart or fill your eyes with involuntary moisture...a profound poet with a guitar...she is a gift from God...an island for the weary of the music industry.
Her Songs From Home weekly series got so many of us through long, dark times during the pandemic. But I return to this recording for its raw honesty and beauty. Incredible.
Yes, if you all remember, I said goodbye to you all.with a heart. I'm still here, this world got worse. Can you imagine after civic ...it just got worse. Love you still!
Wow, my REPEAT button gets set for this beautiful performance! Voice, lyrics, instrument, talented camera work, talented sound work and the calmness and confidence of a brilliant performance...a real masterpiece! THANK YOU!
I found this page by simply doing a Google Search using "whatever happened to Mary Chapin Carpenter?" I have most of her old CDs and have always loved her lyrics, perspective, and voice. This is a beautiful song, beautifully delivered. I'm going to try to stay in touch with her and her music much like I keep in touch with John Fogerty and his music and that is via RU-vid. Thank the lucky stars for RU-vid, ya know? As an aside, wouldn't a pairing of Mary Chapin Carpenter and John Fogerty on an album(or even just a song or two) sound great?
Ms carpenter you are my hero, I have listened to your music for many years and once had the pleasure of seeing you live in Cambridge, I could only hope in my life to emulate your thoughts and music, thank you for who you are xxx
Sparkling magic ... I heard her voice, I saw her sing ... I then knew I'd never get back to where I once belonged ... She's not perfect, no, she is completely different: she is unearthly touching ...
So thankful to have upgraded my computer speakers (Klipsch) and hearing some of her songs over again--what a difference. As if she is in my house playing live!
Mary Chapin is one of the best songwriters of her generation. As another songwriter I ascribe to two women. Joni Mitchel and Mary Chapin Carpenter. They are genius in spinning a story, taking you on a stroll, in a break up, in a lonely place..storms and rain and all things movement. They are beyond what most of us can birth.....This song is haunting and I thank her so much for writing it.
@@reason5591 & Dr Lynn Schriner, I assumed you may not heard of Sandy Denny, well better late than never. An early surprise new year gift for you both. For sure MCC, Joni Mitchell, Joan Baez are terrific songwriter/performer (well known). to billie holiday, sandy denny, arundhati roy 🍄🌄🦄🐞🦚🇺🇲🏴🇮🇳🌬👏🌻🦋💗🕉🙏✌🏾.............🤓
Thank you, thank you Mary. I've gotten so much pleasure from your music videos that you've been gifting us with lately. I feel that I could listen to your songs over and over but still discover a meaning or feeling I I didn't get before.
I first heard mcc somewhen around 1989. In no time, I had banned her from my musical planet, obviously not knowing what I was doing. And now, just by chance, I stumbled over her latter work. Now, THIS makes me humble and, upon all, grateful to all the people who, unlike me, kept faith in her and by doing so, helped to this very place of eternal beauty that never will be just the sky. I want to say endless tnx to Mrs. Chapin Carpenter. Springsteen saved my youth, she is right now saving my middle years.
Enjoyed your concert tonight at Wolf Trap 8/11/18, featuring your new disc. The concert was your best concert at this venue. Just terrific. Had to buy the new CD.
Noises in my head And endless should-haves rain On me like a storm Like a hurricane Losses piled up like wood Stacked stories high Feels like I've been framed I have no alibi Used to be that all I needed Was what I didn't possess Yearning makes you who you End up as, more or less Whatever choice I made That worked out Was just a lucky guess Just a lucky guess Adventures half-discarded Half held onto now dancing on the ledge To the edge somehow I can still pick out the faces Though I forget the names And places that I've gone But the urge remains To throw caution to the wind Or is it to the stars? To hold out my open hands Despite my empty arms To wear my heart down on my sleeve Just like a battle scar These are battle scars There's comfort in a late night Kitchen's radio And in a letter sent Lists of what you know When you don't know anything You make another one It's good to write it down Starting with the sun And sometimes church bells Trees and seasons Marking times gone by Sometimes starlings swell Some tidal moons And filled up eyes Sometimes everything at once But sometimes just the sky Sometimes just the sky
I have decided this is my favorite MCC song ever. That is no small decision considering her body of work. What a tremendous song writer. Love the tuning on her guitar and it took me a couple of days to figure it out. All the best to you.
Wow...beyond words and emotion...I have listened to her from the beginning but she has truly become one of the greats!!! Simply, honest, raw and pure... Now that I am older I can truly see the genius and emotion in and behind her...
I'm ashamed to say that I've only just given this lady some proper attention. What a fool I've been, she is a true phenomena. I'm going make up for lost time.
Ian Smith, you are a bigger fool then you presumed. Hey man listen to Sandy Denny. to billie holiday, sandy denny, arundhati roy 🍄🌄🐞🦄🦚🇺🇲🏴🇮🇳🌬👏🌻🦋💗🕉🙏✌🏾............🤓
